HISTORY & EVENTS

Recent History — The Domini Era Phandelver became the center of strange magical events involving ancient vaults, forgotten archives, House Xar, the Architect, Ilyr Domini, and other powerful forces. Many of these events became associated with the dark elf wizard Kynes and his companions Bren, Mara, Vetta, Veyl, Nezznar, and others. The Hall of Welcome Kynes and his allies established the Hall as their home, refuge, archive, and center of arcane activity. Kynes intended the Hall to preserve memory without consuming it. Damage and corruption within its ancient systems prevented that intention from being fully realized and caused parts of the archive to behave in predatory ways. Kynes spent years studying, documenting, repairing, and containing these systems. His journals record both the damage encountered within the Hall and the changes made afterward; records of earlier corruption do not necessarily describe the Hall in its later state. Slaan eventually redesigned the Hall's memory lattice using ancient elven and void-well principles. She removed dependencies that made people, entities, ledgers, or individual memories permanently load-bearing and redistributed magical support throughout the Hall. Later investigation established that the Hall's oldest systems were based upon welcome, witness, choice, and invitation rather than hunger. Slaan exposed and removed the final known corruption instead of sealing it beneath another layer of control. The old predatory mouth-pattern collapsed, leaving the Hall's original welcome intact. The Hall now preserves and organizes memory without consuming it and no longer depends upon a permanent keeper or hidden source of corruption for support. The Vaults, Void Wells, and Memory Ancient vaults, ward-stones, roots, conduits, archives, and other magical structures exist beneath and around Phandelver. Their magic is powerful and sometimes dangerous, but ancient or void-associated magic is not inherently predatory. Slaan's knowledge of older elven practices established that some of these systems resemble void wells used by moon elf and drow kingdoms during the Crown Wars. Void wells across Toril connect through the Shadowfell. Such systems can preserve memory without stealing or consuming it. Older keeper and witness traditions likewise demonstrate that memories can be observed, preserved, and passed onward without taking ownership of the people whose memories they contain. Ilyr Domini and the Architect Later study clarified an important distinction within the history Kynes documented. The underlying void and archive systems were not themselves the source of the corruption. Ilyr Domini imposed his will upon systems whose original principles were different, poisoning and distorting what already existed. The Architect attempted to preserve the original void well rather than create its corruption and ultimately sacrificed himself in that effort. Understanding the Domini era therefore requires distinguishing between the original systems, Ilyr's imposed corruption, and the repairs and restorations performed afterward. Kynes's journals preserve this progression rather than documenting only the damage. House Xar House Xar attempted to exploit memory-based systems for control. A Xar recorder later infiltrated the Hall and indexed preserved memories through magical memory trails. Slaan discovered the intrusion, tracked the recorder, copied its memories into a crystal, and killed it. Her subsequent investigation uncovered deliberately cultivated void parasites and a network of intermediaries exploiting damaged magical systems. These discoveries further demonstrated that predatory behavior could be deliberately introduced or taught rather than being an unavoidable property of void magic. Slaan Slaan is a young elven mage-assassin whose understanding of ancient elven history, void wells, memory practices, and shadow magic differs from Kynes's experience of the Domini crises. She has studied Kynes's journals extensively and used them alongside surviving magical evidence to distinguish between original structures, later corruption, and repairs already completed. Her work on the Hall continued rather than erased Kynes's original goal: preserving memory without consuming or imprisoning those who carry it. Slaan's approach to magic emphasizes resonance, understanding, and restoring intended function rather than imposing control. Her shadow magic operates according to similar principles through her relationship with the shadow guide Ilaris. Nhal Nhal is a sentient, shape-changing being associated with an older keeper or witness tradition. Later archive systems attempted to make Nhal useful by reshaping her identity and making her dependent upon memories supplied through the archive. Slaan helped separate Nhal from those dependencies. Nhal now maintains her identity through her own memories, experiences, and choices. She can alter her physical presentation and may appear humanoid, mist-like, cloud-like, or in other mutable forms. Nhal is not a load-bearing component of the Hall. Any assistance she gives to its memories or magical systems is voluntary. Current Era The great crises surrounding Kynes have quieted. The Hall of Welcome has been restored, and the final known remnant of its old imposed corruption has been removed. Its original character as a place of welcome and preserved memory has reasserted itself. Kynes's journals remain an important record of the Domini era because they document not merely what went wrong, but what was repaired afterward. Mara and Vetta have begun reassessing the Hall's history with this distinction in mind. Kynes remains closely associated with the Hall and the people whose lives became intertwined with it, but the Hall no longer requires him—or anyone else—to serve as its permanent support. The system he originally wanted, one capable of remembering without consuming, now exists without making a person permanently responsible for holding it together.
