Domini Chronicles: Mara

The blue-dark steps descend beneath the weed-choked drain into a vaulted channel. Ankle-deep water reflects broken violet marks, while the well-keeper holds the ironwood cover above.

The well’s shadow slips along the channel wall, stretched thin over damp stone. Behind Mara, the settlement remains quiet; Seren and Lessa continue toward Councilor Merrow, while Hadrik Voss stays beneath the third alder with his ledger fragment.

Far below, something pulses through the masonry in the same measured rhythm as the buried road. Each beat stirs rings across the dark water, disturbing no spirit or living presence.

Violet fragments climb the vaulted walls, some ancient and worn, others newly scored across the stone. The newer marks angle downward, toward a sealed arch half-submerged ahead.

Mara lowers Soulcatcher toward the broken violet weave. Its strands separate beneath her perception, revealing the old road lattice beneath Veyra Ashhand’s newer directional pattern.

The signature is unmistakable: Veyra’s deliberate method bends preservation toward direction, then direction toward authority. The pulse carries her work, but no living will remains attached.

Soulcatcher draws the signature into Mara’s warded journal as witnessed structure, without creating a route to Veyra or granting the pattern authority.

The examination reveals more than the mark itself: Veyra’s alteration stops at the submerged arch. Beyond it, the older weave remains intact and still records safe returns.

Mara lowers Soulcatcher into the broken weave and works slowly through Veyra’s pattern, separating each imposed turn from the ancient lattice beneath.

Violet threads loosen without tearing the older marks. The directional pressure drains into the water, while the buried road’s rhythm steadies through the masonry.

One by one, the newer scores fade from the arch. The intact weave rises through them, restoring safe returns, preserved crossings, and the whole refusal beneath the submerged threshold.

The pulse settles into its older measure. The arch now carries no trace of Veyra’s direction, and the restored channel records passage without urging anyone through.

Mara extends her healed hand toward the submerged arch and gathers the remaining telekinetic force around its ancient edges. The water stills beneath her concentration.

Stone groans softly. The arch rises from the water without breaking its seals, revealing a dark passage where the restored violet lattice continues in unbroken lines.

Beyond the arch, dry steps descend through older masonry. Silver channels mark safe returns along the walls, while the buried road’s pulse carries steadily into the depths.

The well’s shadow glides across the threshold without entering. Behind Mara, the cleared arch remains open, and the settlement’s quiet water continues its ordinary rhythm.
