The clear ring around the well remains intact. Then the well’s shadow bends sharply downward, pointing beneath the stones as a darker line gathers outside the violet circle.
The Well's Shadow
This residue is unlike the path lattice. Someone stood here after the alteration, and left a deliberate mark.
A thin gray-black trace appears between the well stones, too deliberate for silt and too still for living magic. It angles toward a weed-choked drain beyond the square.
The Well-Keeper
That drain was sealed before my grandmother’s time. The old waterworks ran beneath the settlement, but no one uses them now.
The well's shadow stretches toward the drain without touching the well-keeper. Beneath the earth, a faint hollow answers, followed by the scrape of stone against stone.
The Well's Shadow
The mark leads away from the water and into the closed passage. It carries no command, but it remembers a deliberate arrival.
The drain’s ironwood cover shifts a finger’s breadth, revealing blue-dark steps descending into sealed waterworks. Behind Mara, the settlement stays quiet; Seren and Lessa remain on the ferry road, and Hadrik Voss remains beneath the third alder with his ledger fragment.

Determine what the deliberate mark reveals about its maker
“" someone was altering archive spell weave, she also it seems has been alternating other things as well my friend." I tell the spirit. I trace veyra's spell work”

Mara
Someone altered the archive spell weave. It seems she has altered other things as well, my friend.
Mara raises Soulcatcher toward the gray-black residue. The trace answers her trained perception, separating the old water magic from Veyra Ashhand’s deliberate pattern.
The Well's Shadow
The pattern is the same as the alteration that touched me. It bends preservation toward direction, and direction toward authority.
Soulcatcher draws a thin violet thread from the drain’s stones. It maps Veyra’s spellwork through the closed waterworks, across the eastern hall, and outward toward the altered parchment’s custody channel.
Mara
Veyra’s method reaches beyond one archive.
The Well's Shadow
I remember several touches of that method: the eastern guidance, the record’s custody, and the hand that made passage resemble consent.
The traced pattern settles into Mara’s journal as witnessed structure, naming Veyra’s method without creating a route to her or granting it authority. The drain remains open, and the well’s shadow keeps its chosen duty.
