The Unnamed Valley Route

The pressed grass climbs toward a roofless watchtower of black fieldstone. Mara leaves the wounded traveler behind the standing stones, with Vetta still far away at the Hall of Welcome.

Inside the tower, cold ash lies scattered across the flagstones. Snapped arrow shafts jut from the dust, and scorch marks overlap older damage worn deep into the walls.

Mara

Mara

The fire and the older damage came from different attacks.

A fallen lintel rests against the inner wall. Beneath it, a weathered trail map remains nailed to the stone, its edges curled but its ink still legible.

The map marks the ridge, the tower, and a narrow route winding beyond the hills toward an unfamiliar valley. No name identifies the destination.

Wind moves through the roofless tower, stirring ash into the pale daylight. Outside, the blood trail ends at the hollow, while the mapped route continues beyond it.

✓ Quest Accepted

Establish whether the marked route leads to the unfamiliar valley

“I draw my sword " Soulcatcher dance with me." She uses taps into the weave and sence if any dead spirits are near by”

Mara

Mara

Soulcatcher, dance with me.

Mara draws Soulcatcher. The dark blade catches the pale daylight, and she taps the weave through its edge, listening across ash, stone, and the blood-marked hollow.

Mara

Mara

No dead spirits are near.

The sword answers in a sequence of quiet silver taps. The tower’s old violence leaves impressions in the stone, but no lingering dead presence gathers around them.

The sensing extends beyond the tower and along the route marked on the weathered map. It finds only living motion: Mara, the wounded traveler behind the stones, and distant creatures in the hills.

Soulcatcher’s resonance settles into stillness. The ash remains ordinary ash, the older damage remains history, and the unfamiliar valley holds no spirit calling from beyond the ridge.

“I inspect the tower map for deliberate misdirection”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +0)

The Unnamed Valley Route

Mara pries the weathered trail map from its nails with the tip of Soulcatcher, lifting it free without tearing the curled parchment.

The last nail snaps against the flagstones with a sharp report. Dust spills from the wall, and two fingers of Mara’s marked hand go numb.

She spreads the map across the fallen lintel and compares its ink, fold lines, and faded route marks against the tower, ridge, and blood trail.

The valley route was added later, but the ridge mark was altered to conceal its true direction.

Careful scrutiny exposes deliberate misdirection: the valley road is genuine, but its drawn approach bends east around the ridge when the land requires a western descent.

Under angled light, erased guide strokes reveal an older route continuing west from the hollow toward a narrow ravine, omitted from the final map.

The parchment is now in Mara’s hands, its deception understood. Outside, the living hills remain quiet, while the creature’s blood trail points toward the corrected route.

Director's note

Mara looked at a map, magical backlash should not have happened to her fingers

“I look at my hand with a curious expression”

Mara lifts her marked hand into the pale daylight and studies it with a curious expression. Dust clings to her knuckles, but the skin is unbroken.

The old binding tattoos remain clear along her forearm, their dark lines unchanged beneath the loose sleeve. No fresh mark or magical residue has appeared.

Mara

Mara

The numbness is gone. Nothing has changed.

She turns her wrist, examining the palm and the faint scars left by older workings. The hand answers normally when she flexes each finger.

Soulcatcher rests nearby against the lintel, quiet and dark. The map remains spread beneath it, its corrected western route undisturbed.

Beyond the roofless tower, wind moves through the grass toward the ravine. Mara’s hand offers no warning, only the familiar evidence of her own living body.

✓ Quest Accepted

Leave the roofless watchtower

“I inspect the watchtower for any other clues that point to the valley”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

The Unnamed Valley Route

Mara searches the tower’s inner walls, tracing soot lines, worn mortar, and old nail holes without disturbing the map or Soulcatcher.

Behind a collapsed arrow slit, she finds shallow chisel marks forming three ravens and a descending line. The symbols point west, toward the ravine.

Mara

Mara

The ravens mark a watch route, not a road.

At the tower’s base, loose stones conceal a strip of slate scratched with distances. The final measure ends at a spring beyond the ravine, where the valley route begins.

A rusted iron ring remains set beneath the western threshold. When Mara clears the grit around it, a narrow crawlspace appears, angled toward the corrected descent.

Inside the crawlspace, she finds old boot scuffs, flakes of black mineral, and a faded chalk mark matching the ravens. Someone used this passage recently.

The tower’s clues now agree: the concealed western route leads through the ravine to the spring and onward into the unfamiliar valley.
