Mara and Nera enter Ashbridge’s council room as Orren finishes describing the cairns, the buried road, and the northern warning. Chief Raska and two elders sit opposite the watch captain.

Orren Vale
The creature moved north, away from both settlements. The gray-gloved mark drew attention there, but it did not command anyone to follow.

Nera
I adapted Veyra’s observing craft to watch a boundary without crossing it. I discarded its hooks, its return-paths, and every pattern that treated observation as permission.
Nera places her hooked staff against the wall and sets the cleansed slate on the table. The remaining mark is ordinary ink, stripped of hidden direction.

Nera
I tested Ashbridge because warnings become excuses. I needed to know whether this town could receive danger without claiming every traveler, path, or nearby stranger.

Chief Raska
Useful knowledge can guard both peoples, but shared knowledge can also become a chain. We will not trade one danger for another.

The Watch Captain
Then we decide its limits before anyone carries it beyond these walls. Safeguard, or another reason to control movement. Let the council hear every condition.
“I ask Nera to demonstrate the cleansed craft.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Mara
Nera, demonstrate the cleansed craft. Show us how it observes a boundary without crossing it or turning knowledge into permission.

Nera
Yes. I will use the council’s slate, and every step will remain visible. Anyone may refuse the demonstration before it begins.
Nera places two fingers above the ordinary ink without touching it. A thin gray lattice rises, outlining the slate’s boundary while leaving its surface, seal, and contents unchanged.

Nera
The craft recognizes an edge, records what lies openly against it, and stops there. It cannot open, summon, identify, redirect, or follow anyone beyond the boundary.
The lattice divides into three clear strands: observation, refusal, and separation. The first records the slate’s visible mark; the second remains empty; the third prevents any return-path from forming.

Nera
Now I withdraw. Watch closely. The record remains, but the working leaves no hook, claim, or demand behind it.
Nera lifts her hand. The gray light folds inward and vanishes, leaving only the cleansed slate and its ordinary ink. Chief Raska studies the demonstration in silence, while the watch captain exhales slowly.
“"or a more mundane approach? No magic and use riders for patrols consisting or human and goblin scouts working together." I suggest”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Mara
Or a more mundane approach? No magic. Human and goblin scouts can ride together, patrol the northern roads, and report danger without turning warnings into orders.
The council room grows still. Mara’s proposal leaves the slate, the old road, and every traveler outside the reach of spellcraft, while giving both communities eyes on the same ground.

Chief Raska
Shared riders would make protection a duty held by both peoples. My scouts know the hills, and they will patrol beside Ashbridge’s riders as equals.

The Watch Captain
Agreed. Two riders from each side on every northern patrol, with written reports and no searches beyond what immediate danger requires.

Nera
That is cleaner than my test. Ordinary eyes, named witnesses, and no hidden weave deciding what a warning means.

Orren Vale
I can mark safe ground and changed crossings for the patrols. I will teach them the cairns’ limits, not tell them what every sign must mean.
Chief Raska and the watch captain clasp forearms across the table, sealing the practical agreement. The first joint patrol will ride at dawn, carrying no magic, only maps, names, and shared responsibility.

“" with that settled , nera and I will head north." I say plainly”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Mara
With that settled, Nera and I will head north.
Mara rises from the council table and collects her warded journal. Nera takes her hooked staff, while Ashbridge’s gate opens onto the bright northern road.

Nera
Then we follow the signs without becoming their servants. I will show you what I know, and leave every choice visible.
They leave the town together, crossing hard grass and pale stones beneath a clear sky. Behind them, Orren continues his account with Chief Raska and the watch captain.

Nera
The marker-placer traveled steadily toward the old burial paths. She wanted eyes drawn north, but she also left herself a way to watch who came.
By midday, Mara and Nera reach the first rise beyond the cairns. Fresh gray fibers cling to a thornbush, and a narrow trail continues toward weathered standing stones.

Nera
Someone is ahead, or wants us to believe she is. Either way, the road will show what was actually touched.
