The Weight of the Mark

The guard returns into the torchlit cell block with the bracers cradled in both hands. Iron bars stand shut behind him, and the Captain keeps his hand on his sword hilt, watching Kamakulzar for any twitch of the blood-mark.

The Captain

The Captain

Take them, roamer. Then leave before this place stirs again.

The bracers hum faintly as they near Kamakulzar. A cold pressure prickles along his marked skin, as if the bones in the walls have noticed him.

Kamakulzar

Kamakulzar

The iron is older than the stone.

Old Tusks speaks from the dark seam between cairn-memory and marrow-deep silence, only for him. The sound is not in the room, yet it presses at his teeth.

Old Tusks

Old Tusks

Wear the weight. Let the dead know your shape. Then choose whether you command it, or it commands you.

The Captain stiffens at Kamakulzar's stillness. The guard falters, bracers half-extended, as the blood-mark gives a sharp, hungry pulse and the torch flames bend toward Kamakulzar.

✓ Quest Accepted

Leave the fortress cell block with the bracers

+ New Item Acquired

Heavy training bracers

I put on the bracers and see how they feel, if they feel heavy enough to build muscle

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -2)

The Weight of the Mark

Kamakulzar takes the bracers, and the room answers with a dull iron chill. He slides one onto each forearm, the metal biting tight before settling heavier than it looks.

Kamakulzar

Kamakulzar

They are heavy enough.

He flexes once, then again, and the bracers drag at his arms like training weights made honest. A faint scrape rings off stone as he shifts his stance to test them.

Old Tusks

Old Tusks

Good. Let the weight teach the bone where to listen.

The blood-mark answers with a sharper pulse, and the torchflames lean harder toward Kamakulzar. The guard recoils, empty hands lifting from the offered space as fear replaces duty.

The Captain

The Captain

Enough. Put your hands down, roamer. Those marks do not belong in my cell block.

The Captain takes one step forward, then stops, staring at the bracers on Kamakulzar's arms as if they are already part of a curse. The door behind the guard waits open, and the decision hangs in the cold between them.

I say, you could have drove me off at your walls, many do.

SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled -1)

The Weight of the Mark
Kamakulzar

Kamakulzar

You could have driven me off at your walls. Many do.

The words land softer than the iron chill in the room. The Captain’s stare flickers, caught between the bracers and Kamakulzar’s bare honesty.

The Captain

The Captain

Aye. I could have tried. Most would have. You did not make it easy to choose otherwise.

The torchflames still lean toward Kamakulzar, but the Captain’s hand eases off his hilt. The guard at the door swallows and stays put, though his boots have edged nearer the threshold.

Old Tusks

Old Tusks

Soft words first, then heavy metal. Wise of you to notice the order of things.

The Captain

The Captain

Those bracers suit you less than I hoped. They make a mark of their own.

He takes one cautious step closer, then stops again, fear pricking through his discipline. The open door behind the guard waits like an invitation and a threat at once.

I summon a simple dense 2 ft iron bar

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +1)

The Weight of the Mark

Kamakulzar raises his hand, and the air tightens around it. Iron gathers from nothingness with a low, dry ring, forming a simple dense bar about two feet long.

Old Tusks

Old Tusks

There. A weight to match a weight. The room will notice it.

The new bar settles into Kamakulzar’s grip, heavy enough to pull his arm down. The torchflames bend harder toward him at once, licking sideways like they want the metal too.

The Guard

The Guard

By the cairns... that is not a trick I like.

The guard at the door jerks back from the threshold, and the Captain’s face drains another shade. His hand snaps toward the open door, not to guard it, but to judge whether he can still use it.

The Captain

The Captain

Enough. If that mark drinks the room like this, you leave now, or I take those bracers from you myself.

The bracers gleam on Kamakulzar’s forearms, the iron bar held low at his side, while the guards wait in a tense half-circle for the Captain’s next word.

+ New Item Acquired

Iron bar

I bend the bar ends touching and say, these bracers will make me stronger!

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)

The Weight of the Mark

Kamakulzar sets the iron bar across his palms and bends both ends inward with a slow, brutal creak. The metal folds into a rough loop, and the torchflames lunge toward it as if hungry.

Kamakulzar

Kamakulzar

These bracers make me stronger.

The loop settles in his grip beside the heavy training bracers, the new shape matching the old weight in a way the room cannot ignore.

Old Tusks

Old Tusks

Aye. That is the sort of strength that leaves a mark the room remembers.

The Captain

The Captain

I remember enough already. Less talking with the bones, more moving.

He does not step forward, but his hand tightens at his belt, eyes fixed on the bracers as though they might crawl off Kamakulzar’s arms and choose a new owner.

The Guard

The Guard

Captain, the door is still open.

The guard swallows the rest of his fear and keeps his feet planted only because the Captain has not fled first.

I thank them for bartering peacefully wish them luck with the 2 prisoners

SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +0)

The Weight of the Mark

Kamakulzar lowers the loop and gives the room a brief, respectful nod, the kind offered to folk who keep a bargain under bad light.

Kamakulzar

Kamakulzar

Thank you for the fair trade. Good luck with the two prisoners.

The Captain blinks at the courtesy, then looks to the cell door and back to the bracers, as if deciding whether luck is a luxury he can afford.

The Captain

The Captain

Fair trade, yes. Easy trade, no. Those two are your work, and I mean to keep them contained.

Old Tusks

Old Tusks

Containment is a kind of prayer, little captain. Some prayers hold.

A few guards trade uneasy glances, but none of them challenge the words. The torch flames still lean toward Kamakulzar, bright and restless.

The Guard

The Guard

Sir, if he is finished, I would like the door shut now.

The Captain does not answer at once. His hand hovers near the bracers, fear and duty pulling him in opposite directions as he waits for Kamakulzar to move.

Kamakulzar leaves Stone cell block inside the fortress behind and arrives at the wilds.

I make my way out, and travel into the wilds

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

The Weight of the Mark

The fortress falls behind him, and the wilds open out in damp twilight, all reed-fringed water and black mud shining between tufts of grass. Kamakulzar lands on a firmer rise, the bracers heavy on his forearms, while the bend of the marsh breathes cold mist around him.

Behind the last line of stones, The Captain appears in the doorway, not following, only watching. His posture is tight with duty, but the fear in him has sharpened into decision.

The Captain

The Captain

That is far enough. Leave the cell block behind, and do not come back wearing those things unless you mean to answer for them.

Old Tusks

Old Tusks

Ah. There it is. A man learns the weight only after he lets it step outside with him.

The torchlight at the gate bends once more toward Kamakulzar, then flickers back as the stone threshold swallows it. One guard starts toward the door bar, but stops when the Captain lifts a hand.

The Captain

The Captain

No. He has paid. Let the marsh have him now.

The Captain’s voice settles the matter, and the door is left standing open behind him, not as an invitation, but as a warning. Kamakulzar is already in the wilds, and the fortress chooses caution over pursuit.
