The Marsh Pack Closes In

Kamakulzar breaks from the spellfire lane, long strides churning mud and reedwater behind him. The white wolf and its pack match his pace instead of lunging, fanning out in a hard, running crescent.

The wounded leader keeps close at his flank, shoulder hacked and bleeding through its fur, yet still driving the pack forward. Kamakulzar and the wolf trade quick feints, each testing the other's line without fully committing.

A snap of jaws, a shoulder check, a near miss of horn and teeth. The marsh answers with rising howls as the wolves circle tighter, their rhythm pulling shadowed shapes from the reeds.

More glowing eyes surface in the dark waterline. The pack swells behind the leader, closing the ring around Kamakulzar as if the marsh itself is learning the shape of his stride.

Corner him. Keep him moving. Call the rest.

The bone-mark under Kamakulzar's skin warms in answer to the chorus, tugged by the rising cadence. The wolves do not just hunt him, they seem to measure him, as if his force can be claimed by the dead voices riding their howls.

The circle tightens. One opening remains, narrow and shifting, while the pack's next howl rolls out to the marsh like a summons.

I defend with my staff melee and strike with malice

SUCCESS (Mediocre Melee Combat, rolled +0)

Kamakulzar plants the red staff across the mud and shoves into the nearest rush of teeth and fur. The first wolf line breaks on the wood with a hard crack, splashing sideways.

He turns the staff through the gap and catches the leader across the shoulder, driving it low. The wounded wolf skids, the pack’s rhythm faltering for a breath.

The marsh answers with a churn of startled bodies. Two wolves recoil from the opening, and the ring loosens just enough for Kamakulzar to square his stance.

The pack feels the blow.

The leader snaps back in anger, but its charge is checked. Kamakulzar’s staff stays between him and the jaws, forcing the pack to keep distance.

For a moment, the wolves are the ones circling. Their glowing eyes jitter in the reeds, while the stone dust trail hangs behind Kamakulzar, still unclaimed.

Then a fresh howl rises from deeper in the marsh, answering the leader’s pain and pressing the whole pack to choose, rush again or break away.
