The marsh hollow gives way to a ruin-choked archway, moss slick on its stones, the hidden trail ending at its base like a cut vein. Sickly magic hums through the gap. Zhurrem stops hard beside Kamakulzar, bronze static snapping along his shoulders.

They passed through here. The residue is fresh, and wrong.

The arch shivers. Black threads of necrotic spill still cling to the mortar, tugging toward the far side as if something beyond is pulling back. The stone gives a tiny, dangerous crack.

The trail is not gone. It is feeding this arch.

Zhurrem lowers his head and noses the mud, then jerks back as the hum rises. A faint pulse answers from beyond the threshold, close enough to feel in the teeth, like the drow and elf are waiting for the mark to draw Kamakulzar in.

This is their hook. If you follow, follow fast. If you strike, strike the arch first.

The ruin flexes once more, and a loose stone drops from the keystone into the mud. Beyond the arch, the necrotic tethers lead onward, and the trap is now plain, the hunters using the threshold to turn Kamakulzar toward the entity's influence.

Using a druid technique Call Spirit, i channel a crow spirit into it to activate it as a portal

Kamakulzar lifts his marked hand to the arch and calls. The air catches, then turns with a hush of feathers, as a crow spirit gathers in the crack between worlds.

The spirit slips into the stone like ink into water. Black tethers in the mud twitch, then draw tight, and the arch answers with a low, open thrum.

Wet moss shivers off the joints. The unstable crack in the keystone seals into a dark oval, smooth as a pupil, while the distant pulse from the ruined spire beats once through it.

It takes.

Wind spills through the opening in a thin, cold lane. Beyond it, the marsh is gone from view, replaced by a shadowed passage alive with the faint scent of old magic and fleeing footsteps.

Zhurrem braces beside the threshold, ears forward. The portal holds, but only for a breath, and the way beyond waits for Kamakulzar to commit.

Kamakulzar leaves A distant marsh hollow behind and arrives at shadowed passage.

I begin entering. I say, we take the shortcut

Kamakulzar ducks through the oval of darkness, and the marsh air snaps shut behind him. The passage swallows sound, then gives it back as a low, wet echo under broken stone.

Cold slicks his marked hand as he lowers it. The red stain on his fingers smears against the black wall, and the staff’s ash grain catches a dim sheen.

It holds. Go.

We take the shortcut.

Kamakulzar strides inward, boots scraping grit from the floor. The corridor bends ahead into shadow, and faint footsteps, old and recent, thread deeper through the ruin.

Zhurrem stays at the arch behind him, watchful at the threshold. The portal’s rim darkens, then steadies, as if the stone itself is listening for pursuit.

The passage opens just enough to choose a direction, with one branch carrying the scent of damp moss and the other the sting of stale magic.
