The runes beneath Tuiwen's lantern pulse with that same sickly light, answering her reading at last. Eldred leans close, and the old marks on the wall seem to line up with the trail they have followed.

Tuiwen
The 'Woodmen' signs are warnings.
One rune after another, the meaning turns sharp. These are not lures. They are boundaries, old pleas carved to keep travelers from a thing in the dark.

Eldred
Then the creature has been scratching them out, and planting its own trail in their place.
Outside, the shelter's roots shiver under the earth. A thin seep of shadow slides past the open seam, as if the forest itself is trying to listen.

Eldred
It is no Woodman trick. It wants us to blame them, and keep walking into its snare.
The revelation hangs in the dim chamber. The smoke-like watcher is not a forest ghost at all, but a cunning foreign deceiver, one that hides its own trail by defacing the warnings of others.
“"Two can plan at that game." She uses her sword to scrape away the false runes and restore the original ones.”
SUCCESS (Good Melee Weapons, rolled +1)

Tuiwen draws her blade and sets its edge to the false scratches. Wood shavings curl away in pale ribbons, and the older rune beneath begins to show through.
The knife-bright strokes of deceit fall first. Under them, the true marks emerge, deeper cut and steadier, their lines clean against the lit grain.
Eldred straightens with a sharp breath, watching the revelation take shape as the shelter wall sheds its borrowed lie.

Eldred
There. It is the same warning, only wounded by a stranger's hand.
Tuiwen scrapes once more, and a final smear of dark bark dust drops from the carve. The warning stands whole again, plain to see.

Eldred
Now we know it can read our marks, and ruin them. That means it has been here, close to this place.
Outside the seam, the shadow-thin pressure withdraws from the threshold, as if startled by the restored words. The shelter feels less like a trap, and more like a witness.
“"Just a minute. I know some other runes than these." Carefully, she scratches a ward of protection on the lintel, so nothing evil can pass beneath it.”
SUCCESS (Great Magic, rolled +1)

Tuiwen
Just a minute. I know some other runes than these.
Tuiwen lifts her blade to the lintel and traces a ward in the wood with careful pressure. The fresh cuts glow softly as the old grain answers her hand.
The sign takes hold at once, neat and sure. A hush seems to settle beneath the arch, as if the shelter itself recognizes the shape of protection.

Eldred
Well done. That is a true keeping-mark.
Outside the opening, the shadow-thin pressure recoils farther from the seam. What had been a watching chill becomes a clear boundary.

Eldred
If it comes here again, it will meet the ward first. And if it has touched the trail, then it leaves a trace worth following.
The runes along the wall gleam around the new mark, old warning and fresh protection standing together in the lamplight.
“"The shelter is once again a shelter. If it meant to trap us here, it has failed. But what are we to do about that nasty, lurking shadow? Close the door. I have a plan." She expects that the closed door will lure the shadow to come closer. She prepares a spell of blazing sunlight, the holy light of Anor, which no shadow can withstand. After a couple minutes, she suddenly opens the door and looses the spell at the shadow.”
SUCCESS (Great Magic, rolled +0)

Tuiwen shuts the shelter door, and the old wood fits its frame with a soft, final thud. Inside, the lamplight steadies over the runes, while the ward at the lintel holds the threshold like a drawn line.

Eldred
Let it come. The door is barred, and the mark is true.
Minutes pass in a tense stillness. Outside, the shadow presses at the seam, then slides along the outer wall as if testing for a weaker breath of light.

Tuiwen
It is near the threshold.
Tuiwen opens the door in one clean motion, and blazing sunlight bursts from her hand like noon breaking in a dark grove.
The lurking shape recoils hard, thinning to a ragged smear against the roots and bark. In its wake, a smear of foreign grime and broken false-signs is left plain to see.

Eldred
There. That is its work. It has been pruning the warnings and setting its own trail.
The shelter stands open and unharmed, its true runes bright beside Tuiwen's ward. The deceiver is exposed, and the clear trail of its meddling waits to be followed.
