The twisted clearing opens like a wound in the firs. Bent trunks form a jagged aisle, all of them leaning toward the south, where Dol Guldur smolders beyond sight. The drums do not fade. They seem to answer the path itself.

Eldred
This is no road. It is a herding track.
At the far end of the clearing, a figure stands half-hidden among the warped trees, a hooded sentry with a pale birch charm tied to its staff. It does not rush. It simply points down the aisle, then turns its face toward the shadowed hill, as if to say the gate already knows Tuiwen is coming.

Haldir
The path is open. That is the snare. Yet it is also the approach we need.
The bent boughs frame a distant slit of sickly light between the hills, a glimpse of iron and black stone far off through the trees. The way to the heart of the fortress is marked, and the hunters are being drawn in behind them.

Radagast the Brown
Go now, before the net tightens. If you reach the heart of the hill, the source of the corruption may be broken.

Confront the hunters
“She scans the area for other enemies.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +3)

Tuiwen lets her gaze travel the broken verge, the bent trunks, and the hush beyond the aisle. Nothing stirs at first, but the silence is layered, too careful to be empty.

Tuiwen
There are prints in the rot, and they do not all face south.
Hidden among roots and black moss, she finds three sets of old boot marks, a light drag where a staff has scraped, and one fresh scuff turning off the road into cover.

Saruman
Sharp eyes. Good. Follow the marked ground if you mean to live to see the hill.
The sentry shifts half a step, and the birch charm at its staff gives a dry, pale click. From the trees behind it, another shape answers with a faint rustle, then stills.

Radagast the Brown
There are others in the brush, and not all of them wear the same purpose. Mind the western edge, Tuiwen.
Tuiwen’s search catches one more thing, a shallow ring of ash pressed into the road verge, fresh enough to sting the nose. The hidden watcher is already using the clearing like a hinge, and the next step can be taken by road or by ambush.
“She follows the tracks, alert for ambushes.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +0)

Tuiwen rises from the verge and takes the fresh scuff first, blade low, eyes sweeping the brush. The marked ground pulls west, then dips off-road in a way that only makes sense if someone wants her seen.

Tuiwen
The staff drag ends at the ash ring.
She follows the turn into cover. The old boot prints vanish into fir needles, but the ash clings to a split root, then to another, laying a pale thread through the dark.

Saruman
Good. Keep your feet on the honest signs, and keep your eyes off the pretty ones.
Radagast straightens beside the road, his gaze fixed where the ash trail tightens toward the trees. Behind the sentry, the brush gives one quick, deliberate shiver, and then goes still.

Eldred
There, by the broken fern. Something has crossed ahead of us.
Tuiwen reaches the last visible print and finds it pressed beside a narrow cut in the earth, a hidden passage mouth half-lost under roots and soot. The path is no longer a hint, it is open, and it waits.
“She studies the passage mouth for danger.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -2)

Tuiwen studies the cut in silence, and the dark mouth gives up its secret. Two sets of boot scrapes diverge under the roots, one shallow and careful, one dragged hard enough to catch soot in the grain. Fresh ash clings to the inner lip, not as spill, but as a veil laid by hand.

Tuiwen
The opening is dressed to hide more than it shows.
She shifts her blade-point aside and leans closer, reading the threshold by scent and dust. The passage has been used recently, and something narrow and iron-hard has brushed the right wall, leaving a pale scrape beneath the soot.

Radagast the Brown
Trap-work. Someone means for the careless to step in first.
Eldred’s face tightens as he spots a thread-thin glint in the root-shadow, then the ground answers with a dry, almost breathless click. A hidden twig-snag snaps under Tuiwen’s boot, and a spray of ash jumps across her glove.

Saruman
Now you see it. Good. The path is honest only after it is named.
Tuiwen keeps her footing and the danger shows itself at once, a shallow net of bent reeds and soot cord stretched just inside the cut. The trap is disarmed by its own exposure, but the click carries west, and the forest gives a low stir in answer.
“Has she disabled the trap by naming it? Perhaps. But the enemy has many tricks. She uses a unbinding spell to cause the trap to collapse.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +2)

Tuiwen draws the unbinding through the soot-cord, and the hidden weave loosens at once. The snare sags, its bent reeds folding inward as if the earth itself exhales.
Ash drops from the root-shadow in a thin gray sheet. The narrow cut ahead slumps wider for a breath, then the passage mouth settles into a harmless slit of dark earth.

Radagast the Brown
Well done. That trap is spent now, but the road has heard us.

Eldred
The click carried. We have company somewhere beyond the verge.

Saruman
Then keep moving, if you would see the hill before the net closes.
The forest answers with a low stir, and westward through the firs a pressure gathers, not a sound but a waiting presence.
“She continues following the tracks, alert for danger.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

Tuiwen slips past the slack snare and follows the track west. Ash clings to the road edge, and the hidden passage gives way to fir-shadow and old wheel-ruts.
The marks are fresh enough to read, booted steps crossing the verge, then vanishing where the earth softens. Tuiwen keeps to them, blade low, eyes moving over every root and stone.

Eldred
There. Someone passed hard and fast. Not long ago.

Radagast the Brown
And they mean for us to notice. Step where the ash is thin.
Tuiwen does, and the track leads straight to a darker fold between two firs. The road behind them fades under a hush, while the westward pressure tightens like a hand around the clearing.
Ahead, a hooded shape waits at the tree line no longer pointing onward, but standing in their path. The trap is no longer hidden, and the hunters have chosen the road.
“She scans for any hidden enemies.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Tuiwen stills her breathing and lets her gaze travel the road edge, the firs, the ash, and the black gaps between roots. Nothing moves openly, but the hush itself feels arranged.

Tuiwen
There are eyes in the brush.
She finds them, a dim shape crouched low behind a fallen root to the left of the road, and another pale glint farther back where the branches cross.

Eldred
How many?
The hooded sentry does not advance. Their staff tilts by a fingerbreadth, and the ash at their feet stirs in a thin spiral, as if marking a line that should not be crossed.

Radagast the Brown
Do not split your eyes. The road is watched.
Tuiwen lifts her blade a little, not in challenge but in readiness. In the fir-shadow ahead, two hidden watchers shift at once, revealed by the brief flare of their movement, while the distance answers with a low, uneasy stir.
“"You may as well come out. Only a fool thinks he can hide from an elf in the woods."”
SUCCESS (Superb Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Tuiwen
You may as well come out. Only a fool thinks he can hide from an elf in the woods.
The line hangs in the hush. Ash lifts from the road in a thin shiver, and the fir-shadow behind the root gives way.

Saruman
Then see me plainly, Tuiwen of the wood.
The hood tips back just enough to show a calm face marked by old travel, not menace. Eldred’s shoulders loosen by a breath, while Radagast studies the sentry as if weighing a half-remembered road.

Saruman
I point the way because the way is bait. The hill is not reached by ignorance, only by those who notice the snare and walk anyway.

Radagast the Brown
That answer has the taste of truth, and also of warning. Who taught you this road?

Saruman
The road taught me. It remembers every footstep, every lie, every ash-mark left to steer the unwary.
The sentry lowers the staff by an inch, not in surrender, but in trust measured carefully. The forest stays still, listening.
