Beneath the ancient oak, the air feels cooler, almost clean. Roots rise like old stone around Tuiwen and Eldred, and the rot of Mirkwood seems held back at the edge of their little hollow.

Eldred sits with his back to the trunk, bow across his knees, working carefully at a tangled string. He keeps one eye on Tuiwen, but his shoulders finally loosen.

I have seen three such shapes in the western reaches. One at a ford, one by a fallen beech, and one that watched me from a marsh and never blinked.

Eldred

Eldred

It does not hunt like wolf or spider. It leads. That is what troubles me most.

The oak is healthier than the trees around it.

If your road takes us west, then I would know what lies beneath that leading, and whether it serves the dark place or only stirs in its shadow.

He ties the bowstring off and glances toward the dark forest beyond the roots, then back to Tuiwen with a small, steadying nod. For the moment, the woods only listen.

Learn what lies beneath the creature’s leading

"Well, I suppose it is better to confront it here than to have it surprise me later." Let's go.

Tuiwen rises under the oak and steps out from the roots, her blade still low at her side. She does not call the shadow, only turns her face toward the road’s dark verge and waits.

The pale glow on the roadside edge stirs, then gathers itself into a man-shaped stain between the trunks. It holds still for one breath, as if surprised to be seen.

Then the shape thins, and through the wavering veil Tuiwen catches what it hides, a cluster of broken white bark caught in thorn and root, with old mud dragged toward the west.

Eldred

Eldred

There. That is no beast. It wears a road’s lie, and the trail it makes is real.

Eldred comes up beside her, bow half-raised, his gaze fixed on the thing’s outline as if measuring where it might flee.

Eldred

Eldred

If it turns us toward the Woodmen, then something else waits beyond its pointing. I have seen this kind of trick before, and it never leads to mercy.

The shadow recoils at their attention, and for an instant the westward line it marked feels less like a suggestion than a warning. Eldred’s shoulders tighten, not with fear of the thing, but with the knowledge of what he has not said.

Tuiwen slips from the oak’s shadow and takes the muddy line west, each foot set where fern and root will swallow it. The trail gives her the road’s answer at once, and she follows it without breaking the hush.

The white bark appears again, snagged low in a thorn, then is gone behind her as she passes. Ahead, the mud leads on, as if the ground itself has chosen to remember one set of steps and forget another.

Tuiwen

The trail is fresh enough to hold shape.

She reaches a shallow crease between roots where the westward track bends, and there the way opens into a darker lane under the firs. Tuiwen has the trail now, but a thin smear of black grit clings to her boot heel, the cost of keeping silent.

Eldred

Eldred

You have it. I can see the lie it walks on now.

Eldred

But listen, Tuiwen, this thing is not merely leading. It is shepherding us toward something that knows we follow.

Eldred lowers his bow a little, then not enough. For the first time, his voice carries the strain of a fear he has tried to keep from her, and the bond between them tightens around the truth he finally names.

"Then I will try to spot it before it spots me." She proceeds stealthily.

Tuiwen lets the fir needles swallow her steps and slips deeper along the westward lane. The mud keeps its secret, but the dark undergrowth does not, and she reads it as she goes.

Then I will try to spot it before it spots me.

She moves in the trees’ blind seam, blade low, breath quiet. Ahead, the lane opens into a pocket of gloom where the trunks stand apart, and something there bends the shadows wrong.

It is not a beast. It is a watcher, thin as a man seen through smoke, crouched beside a root with its head turned west.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

There.

The thing’s pointing hand is not searching the road now. It marks the path ahead, toward a half-buried scatter of white bark and dark grit at the base of a fir.

Eldred

Eldred

By the trees... it is waiting for us to notice the sign it leaves behind.

Eldred halts behind her, bow still raised, but his voice drops into a grim whisper. Whatever stalks the lane is leading them to a place, and the fact of it tightens the air between them.

She attempts to sneak past the watcher and, making a half-circle, arrive at the place before it does.

Tuiwen melts into the fir shadows and circles wide, each step placed where the needles already lie thick. The watcher keeps its crouch by the root, blind to the elf slipping behind its chosen line.

The marked fir waits ahead, its base ringed with white bark and dark grit. Tuiwen reaches it first, just as the watcher’s pointed arm remains turned west, still trying to lend the lane its false direction.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

The sign is not here by accident.

She kneels at the scatter and finds the grit is not earth at all, but old, crumbling rot mixed with bark stripped too clean to be natural.

Behind her, Eldred draws in a sharp breath. His bow lowers a fraction, not from ease, but from recognition.

Eldred

Eldred

White bark... that is a marker, not for us alone. Something has been laying a trail to a place it means us to find.

The watcher shifts at last, too late to matter, and the lane feels suddenly narrower, as if the forest itself has noticed Tuiwen at the mark.

She pauses to peer through the woods in the direction the watcher has indicated, hoping to see what lies ahead.

Tuiwen lifts her gaze along the watcher’s indicated line, past the fir trunk and into the dim ranks beyond. The woods answer at once, parting in her sight just enough to make a narrow, hidden lane of pale trunks and hanging shadow.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

There is a path there.

Not far ahead, white bark flashes again, caught on a thorned branch like a warning stripped from the trees. Beneath it, the ground dips into a shallow hollow of churned needles and old rot, as if many small feet have passed through in haste.

And beyond that hollow, half-concealed by fir needles, Tuiwen sees a low shape of worked wood and bound roots, a hidden shelter or marker set where no road should be. It is not the Woodmen’s path. It is a place someone intends her to find.

Eldred

Eldred

You see it too, then. That is no beast’s den. Someone leaves signs for the dark to read.

Eldred’s voice tightens, but he does not step away. He looks less startled than cornered, as if the sight confirms a fear he has been carrying for days.

Eldred

Eldred

If that shelter belongs to what leads us, then it is not wandering. It is waiting.
