At the fallen log, the trail splits again, but not like an ordinary track. The black grime fans into two clean seams across the roots, as if one thing has become two and chosen to lie.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

The split is deliberate. It is meant to mislead.

Tuiwen studies the floor where the sickly green pulse lingers in the soot. The pattern is not scatter, it is division, neat and unnatural, cut with a cold purpose.

Eldred

Eldred

It can divide its essence. By the Valar, I feared this.

Eldred keeps his distance from the log, pale-faced and rigid, as if the answer itself might reach for him. His bow hand trembles once, then stills. The fear he has been hiding now sits plainly on him.

Eldred

Eldred

I did not lead you here for glory, Tuiwen. I led you because I thought if we found the shape of it, we might stop it before it spreads any farther.

"Too late for that, if there are now two of them. We need a new plan. I think only the Istari can help us now."

Too late for that. If it has split, we need a new plan. I think only the Istari can help us now.

Eldred

Eldred

Radagast might know the spoor. He would see what is binding and what is only a trail.

Eldred looks from the divided grime to the rubble-choked passage, then back to Tuiwen. The fear is still on him, but his gaze sharpens into useful memory.

Eldred

Eldred

If we reach the Brown Wizard, bring him this pattern, not just the black stain. The split is the clue.

A loose stone drops from the ceiling and splashes into the sap-dark residue at their feet. The two seams hold apart, neat and patient, as if the chamber itself is warning them not to choose badly.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

The division is real. That is what matters.

Eldred lifts his bow again, not to fire, but to point at the clearer of the two seams. Between the rubble and the fading green pulse, one route looks newly traceable, though the other still disappears into the dark.

"Should we guess which one to follow? What if there are two? And you said you had seen them before, elsewhere. This is exactly what my father sent me to find, evidence of Sauron's plot. I would go back and report to him, but there is more here than an elf can deal with. Only the Istari can help us now."

Tuiwen follows the split with her eyes and lets the evidence speak for itself. One branch clings to the fallen stone, the other runs clean through the residue, as if the corruption has learned to leave two footprints at once.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

Should we guess which one to follow? What if there are two?

Eldred

Eldred

Then we do not guess. We read it. One is bait, one is the trail.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

My father sent me to find evidence of Sauron's plot. This is it. I would go back and report, but this is beyond one elf.

Eldred

Eldred

Aye. Radagast is the one who can name this binding. He has seen spoor like this before, elsewhere.

Dust sifts down harder as Eldred points, and the clearer seam catches the last green pulse from the broken chamber. The sap-dark residue does not move, but it seems to wait.

Tuiwen

Only the Istari can help us now.

Eldred

Then we take the proof with us, and we leave this hole before it takes the choice from us.

"Well, let's scrape together some of this foul grime and bring it to Radagast. He is thousands of years old and wiser than any elf. And if he can't help us, he as friends who can."

Tuiwen crouches and pinches a smear of the split grime between thumb and blade tip. The residue clings like wet soot, then yields with a sour, sap-dark sheen.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

Well, let us take some of this foul grime to Radagast. If he cannot name it, his friends may.

She scrapes the sample onto a scrap of bark and folds it tight. A thin sting bites her fingers, and the chamber answers with another shower of dust.

Eldred

Eldred

Careful. That stuff remembers where it came from.

Eldred kneels beside the clearer seam, marking it in his mind, then looks up with hardening purpose. The lesser trail stays dead, but the true line seems to pull westward through the ruin.

Eldred

Eldred

We have the proof now. Keep it close, and do not let the shards cut the cloth.

The bark packet darkens at the edges as if the stain still breathes. Above them, the ceiling cracks again, and a fresh fall of grit hisses at their feet.

Tuiwen rises with the bark sample clenched in one hand and moves for the seam Eldred marked. The chamber gives under her weight with a brittle groan, but she slips through the clearer line before the rubble can settle on it.

Eldred

Eldred

There, keep low. I have the track.

He steps in behind her, bow tucked close, and drags the cloth-wrapped proof away from a drift of fresh grit. Dust sheets from the ceiling, then falls behind them as the passage narrows.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

Let's move, before the evidence grows cold.

Tuiwen leads on at once, and the hidden way yields. The ruined chamber closes behind them in a last rattle of stone, cutting off the dust and the black stain together.

Eldred

Eldred

Good. We have it, and the shelter can choke on its own rot.

Ahead, the tunnel bends toward the roots and the westward dark. Behind them, the collapse settles into final silence, and Eldred tightens his grip on the sample as if the answer might already be trying to slip free.

"We better get moving. I don't know how long this sample will keep."

SUCCESS (Fair Health, rolled +1)

Tuiwen keeps the sample tucked close and lengthens her stride. The tunnel answers with a low, root-deep creak, but the bark stays wrapped, dry, and intact in her grip.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

We should keep moving. I do not know how long this sample will hold.

Eldred

Eldred

Then we do not waste a breath. Keep the cloth high, away from the stone.

He comes up beside her, angling his bow across his back so it will not snag the walls. The passage tightens, and their footfalls grow softer as the roots crowd overhead.

Eldred

Eldred

This is the same foul work, binding spoor. If Radagast sees it, he will know the hand behind it.

Tuiwen follows the westward bend. The tunnel opens onto a shallow ledge of stone, and the path beyond is clear enough to carry them on without pause.

Behind them, the collapse is finished at last. The sealed chamber holds nothing back now, only a dead seam of rubble and drifting grit.

Wary of the ledge, she takes care to watch her footing.

Tuiwen steps onto the shallow ledge with her weight over the balls of her feet, and the loose stone gives a mean little whisper beneath her boot. She shifts at once, and the warning passes under her cleanly.

The bark-wrapped sample stays steady against her chest as she crosses the narrow shelf. No scrape, no stumble, only the soft sweep of her hem against the wall and the hush of dust settling behind her.

Eldred eases in after her, eyes flicking to the drop and then forward. The ledge holds, and the tunnel opens wider beyond it.

Eldred

Eldred

Good. That was the last bad footing before the wider passage.

Ahead, the way levels out into a steadier run of stone, while the sealed chamber behind them remains dead and shut. For the first time since the collapse, the path west feels chosen, not fled.

Eldred

Eldred

We have the spoor, and we have Radagast ahead of us. If this is Dol Guldur's hand, he may know its fingers.

Is that daylight ahead? She hurries toward it. Tuiwen will feel better when she has the trees around her again.

Tuiwen breaks into the wider passage, and the tight tunnel gives way to a slant of pale air ahead. She lengthens her stride, the bark-wrapped sample held close, blade steady at her side.

The stone beneath her changes from cramped and broken to smoother, older work. The sense of burial thins, and the faint light grows cleaner with every step.

Tuiwen

Tuiwen

Light. Open ground.

Eldred hurries up behind her, then slows as the tunnel mouth comes into view. The westward passage is no longer a burrow, but an exit cut into the roots and rock.

Eldred

Eldred

There. Keep that pace. We are out of the worst of it.

She reaches the opening and the dark behind them falls away into shadow. Beyond, trees wait at the edge of the light, and the route to Radagast finally leaves the underground.

Eldred

Eldred

If the sample answers him, we may learn whose hand is in this. Will you keep moving?

"There is a time to be cautious and a time to hurry. This is a time to hurry."
