Footprints Toward Hollowbell

Weeks of wandering have carried Kekona far beyond the ruined village. At dusk, she reaches Hollowbell Village, where cottages stand open and empty along the dusty lanes.

A bell tolls beneath the central shrine at steady intervals, its rope shifting in the evening wind. No villager appears to answer it.

The village smells of cold hearths, stored grain, and people recently gone indoors. Doorways gape darkly, offering concealment and the promise of prey.

No one is watching the lanes.

Fresh footprints mark the dust from the shrine steps toward the road. They are human, recent, and unhurried, leading directly toward Kekona’s towering silhouette.

The wind carries another toll through the empty streets. Somewhere behind a half-open cottage door, wood creaks softly, then settles.

Hollowbell remains still around her, its lanes open and its inhabitants unseen, while the footprints end several paces before Kekona.

Find the hidden inhabitants of Hollowbell

“Kekona tries using her nose to track villagers.”

SUCCESS (Good Tracking, rolled +1)

Kekona lowers her long neck until her nose nearly brushes the dusty lane. She draws in the evening air, sorting cold hearth-smoke, grain, and the sharper scent of human bodies.

The footprints carry a fresh trail beneath those village smells. Human sweat, leather, and recently handled iron cling to the dust, leading from the shrine toward the cottages.

Kekona

The trail is fresh, and more than one human passed here.

Kekona turns her muzzle slowly, testing the wind from each dark doorway. The same human scent threads through several lanes, strongest near a cottage with its door ajar.

A second trace joins it there: old sweat, ash, and fear, layered beneath the newer trail. Someone has waited inside recently, then moved toward the shrine.

The bell tolls again beneath the shrine, steady and hollow. Kekona now has the villagers’ scent clearly, gathered along the path between the open cottage and the shrine steps.

“Kekona follows the scent trail.”

SUCCESS (Good Tracking, rolled -1)

Footprints Toward Hollowbell

Kekona follows the mingled scents through the dusty lanes, her long legs carrying her from the open cottage toward the shrine. Fresh footprints overlap beneath her paws.

The trail bends around a shuttered granary, then crosses the shrine’s worn steps. Human sweat and handled iron gather thickly there, proving several people passed this way recently.

The scent leads beneath the shrine.

Her tail scrapes a bronze offering basin beside the steps. It rings sharply through Hollowbell, and dust trembles from the shrine’s ancient stonework.

The noise costs her stealth, but the trail remains clear. It descends through a narrow side passage beside the shrine, carrying the villagers’ fear and sweat below.

Kekona reaches the passage mouth and lowers her muzzle over the descending path. The bell tolls overhead while the hidden human scents surround her, fresh and close.

“Kekona keeps following the trail.”

The Remaining Survivors
The Remaining Survivors

Kekona descends the narrow passage, shoulders brushing ancient stone as the villagers’ trail grows stronger. Dust gives way to damp earth, ash, and the sharp tang of iron.

The passage opens beneath the shrine into a low vaulted crypt. Bell-rope fibers hang through a crack overhead, swaying with each hollow toll, while several fresh footprints cross the flagstones.

The humans passed through here.

Kekona follows the overlapping tracks between cracked pillars and old alcoves. Her claws click softly on stone, and the scent of fear thickens near a barred archway.

Beyond the arch, a concealed stair curls downward into darkness. The footprints continue along its steps, accompanied by faint breathing and the scrape of handled metal.

Kekona reaches the bottom and enters a buried chamber beneath the shrine. Three villagers crouch beside stacked grain jars, their faces turning toward her as the bell tolls overhead.
