The western road bends broad between frost-coated fields. Behind Kekona, the ruined shrine and fallen mule disappear into darkness; she travels alone, her wounded foreleg burning with each stride.
Ahead, three covered wagons stand beside the road, their lanterns hooded against the wind. A dozen travelers unload water casks, blankets, and bundled provisions.
Captain Vael Orsin, a broad-shouldered middle-aged man with iron-gray hair, a trimmed beard, and a dark leather coat, watches the fields with a drawn sword.

Captain Vael Orsin
Keep the casks close. We move before first light, whether the road is safe or not.
The travelers obey beneath the wagons’ canvas. Their voices, warm bodies, and spilled water carry clearly across the frozen ground, while none notices the black shape approaching through the frost.

Kekona
The road carries many human scents.

the wagon travelers
Captain, the eastern fields are quiet. Perhaps whatever followed the mule turned aside.
“Kekona stings and poisons the captain before he can react.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled +2)

Kekona glides through the frost-dark grass beside the nearest wagon. Her tail slips beneath the canvas edge, the stinger poised behind Captain Captain Vael Orsin Orsin’s shoulder.
Before Captain Vael Orsin can turn, the bare tip drives into his side. Venom enters cleanly, and Kekona’s tail withdraws into the wagon’s shadow.

Captain Vael Orsin
Ah! To arms! Manticore in the camp!
Captain Vael Orsin staggers against a water cask, sword wavering in his hand. Dark venom veins spread from the puncture as his legs begin to stiffen beneath him.

the wagon travelers
Captain! The grass, behind the wagon! Bring the lanterns!
Lantern shutters fly open, spilling gold across the frost. Travelers seize axes and hooked poles, but their formation breaks when Captain Vael Orsin sinks to one knee, gasping.

Captain Vael Orsin
Do not scatter. Hold the wagons. Keep it away from the children.
“Kekona devours the captain.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled +0)

Kekona surges from the wagon’s shadow and clamps her jaws around Captain Vael Orsin. His sword drops into the frost as venom-stiffened limbs leave the ground.

Captain Vael Orsin
Hold the line... protect the wagons...
His command breaks into a strangled rasp. Kekona carries him beyond the lantern’s reach, dark leather scraping across her blood-marked muzzle.
She devours Captain Vael Orsin beside the nearest cask, crushing sword belt, coat, flesh, and bone beneath her teeth. His fallen blade gleams beside the spilled water.

the wagon travelers
Captain! Gods preserve us, he is dead! Drive it back!
The travelers recoil behind the wagons, axes and hooked poles wavering. Lanternlight catches Kekona’s wounded foreleg as she raises her muzzle over the captain’s remains.

the wagon travelers
Keep together! Do not let it reach the children!

“Kekona charges the travelers, swiping with her claws.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled -2)

Kekona charges from the captain’s remains, frost exploding beneath her long legs. Her tail lashes wide as she drives straight into the wagon travelers’ wavering line.

the wagon travelers
Brace! Strike together! Do not let it through!
Her claws sweep across the nearest defenders, tearing through wool and leather and throwing one traveler hard against a wagon wheel. Blood darkens the frost.
Hooked poles jab at her shoulders as the line collapses. One catches her wounded foreleg, ripping open the coal-burned fur and drawing fresh blood.

the wagon travelers
It is among us! Pull back! Guard the children!
Lanterns swing wildly while travelers stumble between the wagons. Kekona stands inside their broken formation, claws wet, her injured foreleg bleeding onto the road.
“Kekona mauls the travelers, using claws, stinger and teeth.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled +2)

Kekona crashes through the broken line, claws raking wool and leather as travelers tumble across the frost. Lanterns spin loose, painting the wagons in frantic gold.

the wagon travelers
Scatter! The line is broken! Protect the children!
Her tail whips between the wagons. The stinger punches into one traveler’s thigh, and venom locks their limbs before her jaws seize another by the shoulder.
Kekona mauls the fallen traveler beneath her forepaws, teeth crushing through padded coat and bone. Nearby, hooked poles drop as their wielders recoil in helpless terror.

the wagon travelers
Back to the wagons! Leave the wounded! Run!
The remaining travelers break in every direction, but Kekona’s long legs carry her among them. Claws tear one down, her tail stings another, and her jaws finish both.
When the lanterns settle, the road is silent except for frightened children hidden beneath canvas. Bodies lie across the frost, and Kekona stands bloodied between the wagons.
“Kekona devours the children.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled -2)

Kekona turns toward the nearest wagon. Beneath its canvas, two children, two small human children—a girl and a boy with tousled brown hair, pale faces, and patched blue-gray wool clothes crouch among bundled blankets, their frightened breaths quick beneath the lingering screams.

the hidden children
Please, no! We are here! Do not hurt us!
Her foreclaws hook beneath the wagon’s canvas and tear it open. Lanternlight spills across the children as Kekona reaches into the cramped shelter.
One child kicks free and bites her paw, drawing a thin line of blood. Kekona ignores the pain, pins both small bodies beneath her claws, and lowers her jaws.
She devours the children beneath the wagon, consuming blankets, blood, and bone until their cries cease. The bite on her paw burns, but no living prey remains hidden.
The wagons stand silent around her, lanterns guttering over bodies and spilled provisions. From beyond the road, a distant bell tolls once through the frost-dark night.
