The gray wolf circles back through the thorn roots, drawn by blood and the scent of food. It stops at the hollow’s mouth, watching the blue-lit chamber from cover.
Kekona rises beside the spring, towering over Veyra’s discarded sword and the basin. Her tail coils across the passage mouth, barring the wolf from entering.
Hrrrnnk.
Her trumpet-like warning shakes dust from the roots. The bronze charms clash in answer, and the wolf recoils as the den’s narrow entrance seems to belong entirely to her.
The wolf bares its teeth, then retreats beyond the thorn roots. Its paws fade over wet gravel, leaving the hollow to the spring, the charms, and the dead woman’s scattered gear.

Kekona
The entrance is clear, and the wolf is outside.
Kekona settles again beside the water, sated and watchful. Veyra’s blue-runed sword lies within reach, while the lower sluice murmurs beneath the sealed quiet of her underground den.
“Kekona settles. Finally, peace and quiet again.”

Kekona settles beside the spring once more, her long limbs folding across the warm stone. The chamber accepts her weight, and the last disturbed dust drifts quietly from the roots.
Veyra’s sword lies untouched near the basin, its blue runes dark. The scattered remnants of the dead remain still at the passage mouth.

Kekona
The den is quiet again.
Cool water murmurs beneath the black stone, while the bronze charms settle into a slow, familiar rhythm. Their sound no longer calls anything near.
Beyond the thorn roots, the gray wolf keeps its distance and eventually disappears into the wet wilderness. No footsteps follow it back.
Blue light rests softly over Kekona’s black fur and yellow-sclered eyes. She remains sated, watchful, and undisturbed in the hidden chamber.
The lower sluice continues its secret murmur beneath the ridge, unanswered. Kekona does not pursue it, and the sheltered hollow becomes her quiet den.

Beyond the thorn roots, the gray wolf faded into the wet wilderness. Within the den, the spring murmured softly around the silence.

Kekona
Mine. Safe.
Kekona rested beside the water, sated and watchful, with the blue-runed sword within reach. The dark-runed blade and the dead woman's remnants remained untouched.
The den held. Its bronze charms and lower sluice continued their subdued murmuring beneath the earth, keeping time with the spring. Outside, the wolf was gone, and within, Kekona had only quiet, stone, and the settled weight of survival. Here, at last, nothing demanded pursuit.
