The Red Trail Revealed

Dawn filters through the wind-bent pines, laying pale gold across the limestone hollow. Kekona wakes well rested, her full belly settled and her injured foreleg stiff with dried blood.

She bends over the limb and cleans each wound with her rough tongue. Dried blood loosens beneath it, and the fur lies dark and slick again.

Ash, venom, and old human blood flavor her tongue. The ache remains, but the coal-burned foreleg bears her weight without giving way.

The wounds are closed, but the foreleg is still stiff.

The hollow stays empty and quiet around her. Old bones rest among the leaves, while the red cloth continues trembling from its thorn branch nearby.

A brighter gust catches the cloth and pulls it loose. It drifts several feet across the stones, revealing a narrow line of fresh red fibers caught along the darker path beyond.

“Kekona tries to get her foreleg moving to remove the stiff feeling.”

SUCCESS (Superb Health, rolled +0)

Kekona plants her three steady feet among the leaves and slowly lifts the injured foreleg. Dried blood cracks along the coal-burned fur as the joint flexes.

She extends the limb, sets the paw down, then rolls her weight forward and back. Stiffness yields beneath the deliberate motion.

The foreleg moves freely again.

Kekona repeats the exercise, stretching the paw toward the hollow’s warm stone before drawing it beneath her chest. The ache fades to a dull soreness.

She rises fully and takes several measured steps across the limestone. Her long stride steadies, and the injured leg bears her weight without a hitch.

The red fibers remain caught along the darker path beyond the hollow, stirring in the morning breeze. Kekona leaves them undisturbed as she tests her recovered footing once more.

“Kekona walks on, with no real destination in mind, no longer hunting, for she does not hunger.”

The Red Trail Revealed

Kekona leaves the limestone hollow behind, following no trail and choosing no particular direction. Morning light warms the frost as she walks beyond the wind-bent pines.

The red fibers fade behind her among thorn and stone. She neither investigates nor marks their path, her attention drifting across the open fields and distant hills.

There is no hunger calling her onward.

Her long legs carry her over a grassy rise and down through a shallow vale. Recovered strength makes each stride even, while the foreleg keeps only a dull memory of pain.

She passes a dry streambed, a weathered boundary stone, and a stand of bare birches silvered with dew. No voice rises from the quiet countryside.

By midday, Kekona walks beneath a broad gray sky with the road far behind her. The world offers no demand, and she continues simply because the ground remains open before her.

“Kekona keeps moving forward.”

Kekona keeps moving forward across the shallow vale, leaving the birches and boundary stone behind beneath the broad gray sky.

Grass brushes her long legs, silvered with dew. Her recovered foreleg moves cleanly now, carrying her weight without pain beyond a fading soreness.

The ground remains open ahead.

She crosses another dry streambed and climbs a low rise. From its crest, distant hills unfold in layered blue-gray ridges beneath drifting morning clouds.

No road, smoke column, or human voice interrupts the quiet. Wind combs the empty grass, carrying only the scent of earth, pine, and thawing frost.

Kekona descends the far slope at an even pace, her black silhouette passing through the open countryside until the rise hides her from the vale behind.

“Kekona keeps on walking to the hills.”

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -2)

The Red Trail Revealed

Kekona keeps walking beneath the broad gray sky, crossing open grassland toward the blue-gray hills. The shallow vale falls behind her, its dry streambeds fading into the morning haze.

The ascent steepens across loose shale and thorn scrub. Her long legs carry her upward, but a hidden stone rolls beneath her recovering foreleg and opens a shallow cut above the paw.

The hills are close, and the foreleg is bleeding again.

Kekona adjusts her stride without stopping. Blood beads darkly through the black fur, marking several pale stones behind her as she climbs the final slope.

She reaches the hills at last, entering a narrow saddle between two weathered ridges. Wind pours through the gap, carrying scents of pine resin, cold rock, and distant rain.

From the saddle, the countryside spreads below in empty folds of field and woodland. No road, smoke, or human movement claims the hills, only a broad wilderness opening beyond them.
