Kekona stretches across the warm stone beside the spring, her long limbs easing into the chamber’s quiet. Tarin’s scraps and bone-handled knife remain near the passage, untouched.
She lowers her broad muzzle to the clear water and drinks deeply. Coolness passes through her as the bronze charms answer with a soft, patient rhythm.

Kekona
The water is colder than the stone.
After drinking, Kekona grooms the damp fur along her foreleg and shoulders, drawing her claws carefully through the black strands. Blue light glides over her still, uninjured body.
The chamber holds no footsteps, voices, or living scent. Beyond the basin, the lower sluice murmurs steadily beneath the ridge, while the open passage admits only a faint breath of pine.
Time settles around the den. Then one bronze charm turns slowly on its rootlike chain and reveals a tiny red thread caught behind it, stirring whenever the spring breeze passes.
