The dead camp lies behind Kekona, its fire reduced to ash. One freed mule clatters up a narrow trail, trailing a blood-dark rope through frost and thorn.
Beyond the rise, a roadside shrine shelters three travelers beneath a weathered stone saint. A middle-aged woman in a green cloak unloads baskets while a bearded young man steadies the pack animals.
An elderly elf man with silver hair and a narrow frame arranges prayer jars beside the shrine. None sees the mule approaching, or the red stains along its dragging rope.

The Middle-Aged Woman
Set the grain beneath the saint. We will rest here until dawn, then take the western road.
The mule clatters past the shrine stones, making the animals toss their heads. The travelers turn toward the sound, their bodies still angled away from the thorn-dark trail.

Kekona
The bell rope hangs within reach of the travelers.
Cold wind carries their human scent uphill to Kekona, mingled with oats, leather, and old incense. The shrine bell waits beside them, silent beneath the watching saint.
“Kekona charges the travelers.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +4)

Kekona launches down the frosted rise, her long legs driving through thorn and dead grass. The travelers look up only as her black silhouette eclipses the shrine’s weathered saint.

The Middle-Aged Woman
Run! Leave the baskets!
She crashes into the shrine’s forecourt, scattering grain and prayer jars. Her shoulder sends the middle-aged woman and the bearded young man sprawling together against the stone steps.

The Bearded Young Man
Gods preserve us!
The elderly elf man falls beside the saint, silver hair spilling across the frost. Kekona’s forepaw pins the young man’s cloak while her tail sweeps the woman’s basket aside.

The Middle-Aged Woman
Please, take the food. Take everything, but let us live!
The charge has trapped all three travelers within the shrine court. Broken baskets and a toppled handcart block the western road, while the freed mule stands penned behind them.
“Kekona devours the travelers.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled +3)

Kekona’s forepaw bears down on the bearded young man’s cloak. Her jaws close around him, and his cry vanishes as she lifts him from the frosted stones.
She devours the bearded young man beside the toppled handcart. Leather, wool, and bone disappear beneath her teeth while spilled grain scatters through the shrine court.

The Middle-Aged Woman
Please, no! Take me instead!
The middle-aged woman’s plea ends when Kekona seizes her from beside the baskets. Her green cloak twists against black fur, then disappears as the manticore feeds.
The elderly elf man crawls toward the weathered saint, silver hair dragging through frost. Kekona catches him by the robes and lifts him from the shrine steps.
She devours the elderly elf man last, leaving the forecourt silent except for the freed mule’s anxious snort. The western road lies open beyond the ruined handcart, and fresh hoofprints reveal a clear trail into the night.

Catch the freed mule
“Kekona pounces the mule.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled +2)

The freed mule clatters along the western road, rope dragging through frost. Kekona lowers her hunched neck and launches from the shrine court after it.
Her long legs carry her across the open stones in a few pounding strides. The mule twists its head, but Kekona’s shadow has already swallowed it.
Kekona pounces, striking the mule broadside. Her forepaws crush it into the frosted road, and the trailing rope snaps taut beneath her weight.
The mule thrashes once, hooves gouging pale earth, then falls still beneath the manticore. Its panic becomes a fading rasp in the cold night.

Kekona
The road carries fresh human scent beyond the mule.
Kekona tears into the fallen animal beside the shrine road. Warm blood steams against the frost while the ruined forecourt recedes behind her.
When she lifts her muzzle, the mule lies limp and stripped beneath her claws. The western trail remains open, marked by hoofprints and a stronger human scent ahead.
