The blue radiance fades behind Kekona as she climbs the narrow stair. She has barely left the buried refuge when cold night air replaces the crypt’s dampness.

She emerges beneath the open sky, shrine stones rising around her. Lanterns burn in the square below, gathered around a hastily rebuilt barricade of carts and timber.

Behind the barricade cluster several villagers: an elderly woman in a gray shawl, a young adult man with a red scarf, and two frightened children in patched wool.

They have not seen Kekona yet. Their fear carries clearly through the night, mingled with lamp oil, splintered wood, and the fresh human scent trailing from the shrine.

Keep the lanterns steady. If it comes from the shrine, we hold the line here.

The young man grips a wood axe with both hands, though its blade trembles. The elderly woman presses one child behind her skirts and stares toward the square.

Kekona launches from the shrine steps, her long legs folding and her black-furred body dropping toward the barricade in a sudden, silent mass.

She crashes onto the carts and timber, splintering the hastily rebuilt barrier beneath her weight. Lanterns swing wildly, throwing huge shadows across the square.

Run! Run for the shrine!

The elderly woman drags one child backward, but the other stumbles beside the fallen carts. Kekona’s tail lashes over them, sealing the broken line.

The pounce has shattered the villagers’ formation. Beneath the manticore’s shadow, the trapped young man gasps while the children and elderly woman recoil into the lantern-lit wreckage.

“Kekona eats the man.”

Grandmother! Help me!

No! Leave them! Take me instead!

Kekona seizes the stumbling child in her jaws and lifts them from the dusty stones. The plea becomes a muffled cry beneath the lanterns.

The elderly woman raises the lantern and strikes at Kekona’s muzzle. The blow bursts harmlessly against black fur, but its metal rim cuts Kekona’s lip.

Kekona lunges through the lantern’s falling glow and closes her jaws around the woman. The old woman’s cry ends as the manticore lifts her from the stones.

She devours the elderly woman beside the ruined barricade, gray wool and blood vanishing beneath her teeth. The lantern rolls in the dust, spilling fire across the square.

The cost of the meal marks Kekona’s muzzle with a thin line of blood from the cut. Beyond her, the shrine steps stand empty, and no human voice answers.

“Kekona tries to track down the other child.”

She devours the remaining child beside the boundary stone, consuming patched wool and fragile bones until no living struggle remains. Frosty grass bends beneath her forepaws.

Find living prey in the dark fields

“Kekona looks for more prey in the area.”

SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -1)

Villagers Hold the Shrine Line

Kekona lifts her blood-marked muzzle and searches beyond the boundary stone. She tests the cold wind, turning slowly as Hollowbell’s last lanterns fade behind her.

The fields yield frost, crushed grass, and the familiar scent of the dead child. Beyond them, another human trace threads through the darkness, fresh and warm.

More humans passed this way.

Kekona lowers herself into the winter grass and follows the scent. It carries sweat, leather, and smoke from a small camp hidden beyond the low ridge.

Her keen senses separate several human bodies from the windblown earth: at least four, traveling together, with pack animals and a banked cooking fire.

The trail leads northeast through a shallow ravine, where bootprints remain sharply pressed in mud beneath the frost. The prey passed recently and left no sign of awareness.

Kekona crests the ridge and sees a dim orange glow below, partly screened by thorn trees. Human silhouettes move around a canvas shelter, unaware of the predator above them.
