Cornered in the Tavern

The tavern groans under Kekona’s weight as she stalks past the wrecked threshold. Ale runs in dark streams between the floorboards, and the second villager presses harder against the bar, ladle raised with shaking arms. Near the cellar hatch, the fallen villager scrambles on elbows and knees, trying to reach the one route left that is not blocked.

Kekona snaps the ladle aside with one clawed hand. The metal clangs across the room, leaving the villager’s grip empty and useless.

The Second Villager

The Second Villager

Stay back! Please, stay back!

The warning cracks into a whimper. The villager behind the bar starts to sidestep, searching for a gap, but the bar itself is a dead end, a trap made of polished wood and fear.

At the cellar hatch, the crawling villager fumbles for the iron ring. Kekona’s tail lifts above them, and her shadow covers the last stretch of floor between life and the dark below.

Kekona

Kekona

Kekona lowers her head and closes in, forcing both survivors to choose between the cellar and her jaws.

The room breaks with their panic. One villager recoils from the bar, the other freezes at the hatch, and Kekona’s advance seals both escapes at once.

Kekona stings the villager at the hatch.

SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled -1)

Cornered in the Tavern

Kekona’s tail snaps down at the hatch-side villager. The strike lands with a wet crunch, and the iron ring skitters from numb fingers into the ale-slick floor.

The Fallen Villager

The Fallen Villager

No, no, no... not the cellar...

Kekona devours the fallen villager, while stinging the second villager.

SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled -2)

Cornered in the Tavern

Kekona drives in. Her jaws close over the fallen villager with a brutal, final snap, and the body jerks once before going limp in her mouth. At the same instant, her tail lashes across the second villager’s shoulder, spinning them sideways in a spray of ale.

The Fallen Villager

The Fallen Villager

No, no...!

The fallen villager’s struggle ends under Kekona’s teeth. Their terror goes still, leaving only the crunch of boards and the wet drag of the kill.

The Second Villager

The Second Villager

Stop, please, stop! He’s gone, he’s gone!

The second villager claws backward from the bar, one hand clamped to the stinging welt, eyes fixed on the blood and the ruined hatch with nowhere left to run.

The Second Villager

The Second Villager

There is no door, no cellar, no help.

The innkeeper’s last rally collapses into the room’s silence. One defense is broken, another body is taken, and the remaining villager freezes, shaken past resistance.

Kekona pounces the second villager and devours him as well.

SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled -2)

Cornered in the Tavern

Kekona surges off the hatch in one vicious bound and crashes into the second villager. They hit the floor hard, breath knocked out in a choked cry, as her weight pins them before they can crawl another step.

Her jaws close again, and the room jerks with the force of it. Wood splinters under their thrashing heel, then the struggle weakens as she tears free what remains of their resistance.

A wet scrape follows when Kekona drags her prey clear of the bar, and the second villager goes limp in her grip. The tavern is left with only overturned benches, blood on the floor, and the ragged sound of her breathing.

The last human shape in the room is gone now, swallowed by claws and teeth. What remains is silence, except for a distant, useless creak from the partly shut door as it settles in its frame.

Can Kekona smell more villagers in the cellar?

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 54)

Kekona catches the faint, metallic scent of more prey hiding beneath the floorboards, but the heavy cellar hatch is bolted from the inside with iron bars that her claws cannot easily pry.

Kekona tries smashing the hatch in.

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +0)

Cornered in the Tavern

Kekona drives her weight down, and the hatch bursts open with a splintering crack. The iron bars wrench askew, the bolt tears free, and a breath of damp cellar air rises through the ruined frame.

A sharp jolt runs up her forelegs from the impact, and one claw splits on the wood. Dark blood beads where she struck, but the opening is there.

Below, torchlight trembles over stacked casks and the white faces of hidden villagers. Their hush breaks into a startled gasp as they look up at the hole in the floor.

Hidden Villager

Hidden Villager

No, no, keep back! It is open!

The cellar’s stale fear rolls up around Kekona’s muzzle, mixed with spilled ale and cold earth. Somewhere above, the tavern floor creaks under shifting feet, but no new barrier forms.

Kekona stands over the broken hatch, the way clear into the cellar, while the trapped prey below scramble in the torchlit dark.

Kekona jumps down into the cellar.

SUCCESS (Great Athletics, rolled +3)

Cornered in the Tavern

Kekona bunches her hind legs and drops through the broken hatch, her shoulders scraping splinters as she lands hard in the cellar. The hidden villagers flinch apart, torchlight jumping across casks and stone.

Her impact shakes dust from the beams above. One of the cellar candles gutters out, and the cramped room sinks deeper into orange shadow.

Hidden Villager

Hidden Villager

She is in here now, run!

The nearest villagers stumble back into the casks, arms up, too tangled in fear to find a clean escape. The cellar route is lost to them.

Hidden Villager

Hidden Villager

The trapdoor is open, get to the stairs!

Above, the tavern floor creaks, then gives a sharp groan as more feet cluster over the ruined hatch. One desperate voice from upstairs hammers through the boards, still trying to rally the rest.

Below Kekona, a loose ring of cellar keys swings from a nail beside the stacked barrels, forgotten in the rush. The hidden prey eye it, then eye her, and neither choice looks safe.

Kekona devours the villagers in the cellar.

SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled +0)

Cornered in the Tavern

Kekona closes on the nearest cowering shape and the cellar erupts into a brief, panicked scramble. A cry cuts off under her jaws, and the others recoil into the casks, no longer trying to stand together.

She drags one prey from the floor and the hidden room changes at once, from a hiding place to a slaughterhouse. The ring of keys on the nail clinks softly as the barrels shudder.

Hidden Villager

Hidden Villager

No, please, please, don’t!

Kekona tears through the last attempt at a barrier, and the cellar’s defenders break. One stumbles away from the hatch, one freezes against the stone, and neither reaches the stairs.

Hidden Villager

Hidden Villager

The trapdoor is useless now... she is already in here.

By the time she lifts her head, the hidden villagers are no longer a line or a plan, only prey pressed into corners. The cellar falls into ragged silence, save for the scrape of claws and the tavern floor groaning above.

The last resistance in the cellar is gone. Above, desperate feet still crowd the broken hatch, but below there is nowhere left for the survivors to stand.

Kekona finishes devouring the villagers in the cellar.

SUCCESS (Legendary Mauling, rolled -2)

Cornered in the Tavern

Kekona closes her jaws and the last hidden villager goes still in the dust. The cellar’s final corner empties of movement, and the ring of keys gives one bright, useless clink against the nail.

She shifts her weight, dragging the fallen body inward as the casks rattle under her bulk. A sharp sting answers in her paw where the broken hatch splintered her claw.

The cellar is no longer defended. Only wrecked barrels, the torn hatch above, and scattered blood remain where the hidden villagers once crowded together.

From overhead comes a burst of muffled feet and a cracked voice, the last desperate rally from the tavern floor, but no one below rises to answer it.

Kekona

Kekona

The cellar is empty.

Dust settles over the stone, and the broken opening gapes upward like a mouth waiting for the next shape to drop through.

The silence holds, thin and shaken, while the movement above pauses at the edge of the hatch.
