Adventure of Vaelira 1

Vaelira spills out of the service opening and lands hard in a mat of ivy and moon-cool jasmine. Behind her, the estate rises in black stone silence, all shuttered windows and old pride.

Pip tumbles after her, shakes grit from his fur, and lifts his ears toward the far side of the grounds. Somewhere beyond the hedges, patrol steps keep a steady, measured rhythm.

Moonlight lays a pale path through the overgrown garden, broken by a dry stone walk and half-wild roses. The air smells of damp earth, jasmine, and old rain trapped in the leaves.

Pip glances back once, then noses toward the darker reach of the path, impatient but alert.

From the estate side, a low bell sounds once, distant and muffled, as if the house has noticed something gone missing.

Vaelira drops into a crouch beneath the hedge-line, her dark shape folding into the ivy and shadow as Pip slips ahead to guide her. She moves with measured care, using the broken moonlight only when it hides her, not reveals her.

Pip pauses by a stone border, ears forward, then glides on in a low, quiet lope. His pause gives Vaelira the route without a sound.

Beyond the roses, two armored guards cross a lantern-lit path between clipped yews, their voices muted by distance.

Vaelira times her movement to the guards’ turn, slipping from one patch of darkness to the next while Pip stays just ahead, never breaking her line of concealment.

The patrol passes without looking their way. Vaelira reaches the far side of the garden walk, where the hedge opens toward the outer grounds.

Ahead, the perimeter wall looms through tangled branches, and a lantern glow sweeps once more across the grass, forcing the next choice into view.

Vaelira watches the guards turn their backs to the perimeter wall, their patrol path leading them steadily away from the stone barrier. The wall remains unguarded, a silent gap in the estate's defenses.

Vaelira lifts two fingers in a small, precise signal. Pip slips from the hedge, belly low to the grass, and vanishes into the dark seam beside the wall.

The fox reappears at the edge of the path, ears pricked, tail still as a drawn line. He waits there, watching the lantern glow wash across the ground.

A beat later, Pip flicks his tail once. Clear.

Vaelira starts forward from the hedge, keeping low as the lantern sweep passes behind her.

Ahead, the perimeter path bends into shadow beyond the estate stones, while the guards continue their slow march away from the wall.

Vaelira slips into the wall opening, the stone cold at her shoulder. Pip darts in after her, a red blur swallowed by shadow.

Behind them, lanternlight washes the garden edge and finds only empty grass where they were standing a breath ago.

They clear the breach and press along the outside of the wall, where brambles snag at their boots and the hedge muffles the path back into the estate.

The patrol continues on the far side, voices faint, lanterns drifting away from the gap.

Vaelira and Pip gain the dark beyond the grounds, with the manor’s boundary now behind stone and thorn.
