The hollow settles into a soft hush beneath the leaning ash. The roots glow from below like banked embers, and the open ledger rests on the moss between them, calm at last.
Caelen sits against the roots with weary grace, one hand still on Pip’s head. The fox leans into his palm, eyes half shut, as if he has decided the world can wait.
Dalen lowers himself to a fallen limb a little apart from the others, rolling his bandaged hand once and then letting it rest. He watches the ledger, then the ash roots, as if he is learning to trust both.

Mara
It is strange, seeing a house quiet enough to listen. Stranger still, it may have heard us all along.

Caelen
I never liked rooms that kept score. This one has terrible manners.
Pip gives a tiny huff and nudges Caelen’s wrist, demanding attention. Dalen’s mouth quirks despite himself, and Mara glances toward Vaelira with a steadier, less guarded look than before.

Dalen
When the next name comes, I want to know whether it is a warning... or an answer.
“Vae sits silently with the group, bringing her knees to her chest, staring down at her feet as a form of comfort for herself. She makes sure there is silent distance between herself and Cael. Now there's a chance to actually process everything that's happened and there's no worries of losing his physical state. Seems like Pip has taken to his best friend being back already, but for Vae? It's not as easy. Sure she can push her thoughts to the side in a moment of danger, but this opportunity to rest is making her mind swirl. Instead of answering the group, she lets them continue speaking, just keeping her mouth shut and staring down at the ground while listening.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Vaelira folds in on herself at the edge of the moss, knees drawn up, gaze fixed on her boots. She lets the others talk around the silence she makes, and the hush settles over her like a cloak she chooses to keep.

Pip
A soft rustle of approval passes through the fox as he settles closer to Caelen, then glances back toward Vaelira without moving away.

Caelen
You are allowed to be quiet, Vae. I remember that much about you.
The old nickname lands gently, not as a demand but as a hand offered and not forced. The ledger lies open between them, its pages still, while the ash roots breathe their steady light.

Mara
He is right. Silence is honest work, sometimes.
Dalen looks from Vaelira to Caelen, then away again, giving the moment room. The forest above them grows strangely still, as if even the leaves are listening.

Caelen
There was a winter road, years ago. You stole bread, I stole apples, and we laughed because we thought hunger had lost track of us.
The memory hangs warm in the hollow. Vaelira keeps her distance, keeps her silence, and still the bond between them deepens, quiet as the roots underfoot. Outside, the hush lingers just long enough to feel like warning.
“Vae continues to listen, her eyes narrowing unexpectedly a the 'permission' to be quiet. Who is he to say she's granted permission on how she FEELS? Who is Mara to back him up? More importantly, who is Pip to welcome him home immediately without question or guard. Why wasn't he at HER side? A memory once warm instead feels as cold as the winter road was years ago. Her eyes glance up to look at Dalen, who is the only one to not speak and let her just EXIST and process. "Those were simpler times... however that was also when you lied to me." Vae says coldly, her gaze shifting to meet Caels. "Why didn't you ever tell me what was going on back then? Do you see the SHIT you dragged me into, Caelen?" No nicknames for him. He doesn't deserve that right now.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Vaelira lifts her head at last, and the little hollow seems to tighten around the sound of her breath. The ledger rests untouched in the moss while the ash roots cast a pale seam of light across her knuckles.

Vaelira
Those were simpler times... but that was also when you lied to me.

Vaelira
Why didn't you ever tell me what was happening back then? Look at the mess you dragged me into, Caelen.
The words land cleanly. Caelen goes still, his nostalgia cracking into something more sober, while the ring of roots keeps breathing its steady glow.

Caelen
Because I was afraid you would look at me and see only the wrong choice I made.

Caelen
I told myself I was sparing you. I was also hiding.
Pip shifts closer to Vaelira's side, then pauses, ears angled between them as if measuring the air. Dalen does not interrupt; Mara's gaze sharpens, but she keeps her silence.

Caelen
You deserve the truth now. I should have given it to you then, before the House could turn every mistake into a chain.
Vaelira's last sentence leaves a thin ache in her throat, and her wrist flares hot enough to sting. The ledger gives a faint answering pulse, as if it has heard the argument and chosen a side.

Leave the hollow before the silence breaks
“"Sparing me? No. It was selfishness to keep me around knowing what baggage you carry. All while I remained innocent, naieve, and in love." Vae snaps at the man she... loves? Loved? Who is he? Is this the same man she used to share a bed with? This isn't the time to laugh about memories. There's a lot of apologies, and a lot of making up to do. Naturally a gentle hand reaches out to Pip, to help ground herself with the touch of his soft amber fur. Once satisfied, she's the first to rise to her feet and brushes off any moss stuck to her clothing. "There's no time to reminisce about the past. Everyone, get up and get ready to go." The elven woman commands with a sharp look in her eyes. Everyone here, aside from Pip, feel once more like strangers to the struggling woman. There is no one else she can trust except herself, and her fox companion.”

Vaelira
Sparing me? No. Keeping me near while you carried that kind of burden was selfish.

Vaelira
I was innocent once, naïve once, and in love.
Vaelira breaks the stare and lets her hand find Pip’s fur, slow and steady. The fox leans into her palm, and the tension in her shoulders shifts by a breath.
She rises, brushing moss from her clothes in one sharp motion. The ledger lies quiet on the roots, but the hollow has gone taut around the silence above.

Vaelira
Enough reminiscing. Everyone, up. We leave now.
Dalen straightens at once, and Mara’s attention snaps toward the tree line. Caelen falters, then gathers himself, as if the command lands harder than the anger.
Pip stays close at Vaelira’s heel, eyes bright and watchful. Beyond the ash roots, the woods remain unnaturally still, waiting for the first step.
“The elven woman signals everyone to move out, opting to take the back of the line from a mild distance so she can be left alone with her thoughts. Pip is always welcome to join her, and if there's anyone else she'd consider speaking to, it would be Dalen instead.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Vaelira gives the group a small, curt gesture and starts forward at once, not waiting to be asked twice. She lets the others take the center while she slips into the rear, a few paces back, where the path and the silence are hers to measure.
Pip pads in close beside her at first, tail low and ears pricked, then slows to match her stride. The fox keeps half an eye on Vaelira and half on the dark woods beyond the hollow.
Ahead, Dalen falls into step without protest, turning once as if checking who follows whom. Mara remains nearer the middle, steady and alert, her gaze moving from root to root.
Dalen says, quietly, "If we move now, we keep the dusk before it hardens."

Vaelira
Vaelira notes the ledger is still quiet, though the hush overhead feels too complete to trust.
She keeps her distance, letting the others’ footfalls carry ahead of her. The ash roots glow faintly beneath the moss, and the hollow’s stillness clings to her skin as the group reaches the far edge.
Then the first step takes them out, and the woods receive them in that unnatural quiet, with no birdsong to cover the sound.
