Under the Whispering Woods canopy, Vaelira crouches in the hollow of an ancient oak. Roots curve around her like a hidden chamber, and the stolen papers lie across her knees in the hush of leaf-shadow.

Vaelira
The documents are real. This is enough to ruin someone.
Pip noses the edge of the bundle, then sneezes at the dust and hops back, ears pricked toward the dark behind them. Vaelira notices a thin red thread tied to the inner seam of the packet, almost invisible until it catches the moonlight.
The thread trails into a small brass charm tucked among the folds, no bigger than a thumb joint. It is meant to cling to a garment or satchel, and it has not been there by accident.

Pip
A trap.
Vaelira stills, documents spread before her, the oak shelter suddenly feeling less like safety and more like a place to choose. Keep the proof, burn it, or pass it to someone who can use it, but if she moves wrong, the estate may already be following the charm’s trail.

Brass Charm
“Can I use the brass charm to lead the pursuers into a false trail?”
NO (Likely, rolled 75)
Vaelira tests the charm, but the thread is fused to the vellum with a magical residue that resists every attempt to detach it. The charm pulses with a faint, rhythmic heat, proving it is not a simple lure to be moved, but a fixed anchor that will reveal her position regardless of where she hides.
“A heavy sign escapes Vae's lips as her eyes shift from the charm and vellum, to pip who has been loyally by her side this entire time. For just a moment, it is finally just the two of them again - the way it used to be after Cael had passed away. She can feel the emotions of the night starting to catch up with her. Normally a more stoic woman, or someone who laughs off situations with sarcasm... now she feels like the young girl who had fallen madly in love and was devastated once her partner passed. She originally resented pip, as pip was always Cael's companion and not hers. It took a long time for the two to warm up to each other upon his passing. And how dare Cael appear after all this time... what was supposed to be a simple mission for coin turned into a life-changing experience with the ghost of her former lover now... haunting her? Rooting for her? She cannot tell. The document begins to shake in her hand and she places it down, turning to Pip and reaching out a hand.”
NO (Likely, rolled 75)

The charm remains stubbornly fused to the vellum, its heat unyielding and its presence a constant, mocking reminder of the trap she carries. No matter how Vaelira shifts the parchment or angles her fingers, the magical bond refuses to break.
Director's note
The document begins to shake in her hand and she places it down, turning to Pip and reaching out a hand.

Vaelira lets the vellum rest on the moss and turns toward Pip instead. The glow from the charm licks the underside of the oak roots, but it no longer commands her attention. Her hand opens, slow and deliberate, offering warmth rather than work.
Pip lifts his head at once, ears pricking. He rises from the roots with a quiet, careful step, as if he understands the moment has changed.

Pip
There you are.
The old ache in her chest surfaces, then eases when the fox leans into her palm. The memory of Caelen stands with them, not as a wound only, but as a shared shadow that shaped them both.
Vaelira’s fingers curl lightly through Pip’s fur. The documents stay untouched beside her knee, the hidden charm still trembling faintly where she left it.

Pip
Safe. Stay.
For a quiet breath, the woods hold. Then Vaelira’s gaze drops back to the parchment, steadier now, as if she has room to read it again.
“She can feel her throat begin to tighten as she and the canine make long eye contact. No words ever need to be exchanged in the same language, but they understand each other. It took a long time to get here, but my god was Cael right when he said keeping Pip would be worth it. Her gentle touch is meant to be encouragement for the both of them after what they had just went through. Her lips part to speak, but she's afraid of her voice betraying her. The emotions are starting to flood in. It's a rare moment, and honestly Pip may not have seen her cry since she mourned Cael for months after his passing. "I'm so sorry, Pip." she chokes out as tears begin to flow. "I don't know how you feel about seeing Cael again, but it must feel similar to how I feel. If not, then you are incredibly strong. I don't know what to do..."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

Vaelira’s voice breaks on the first apology, and the words leave her in a thin, unsteady rush. The charm lies forgotten beside the parchment, its glow faint under the roots.
Pip stills, then steps closer instead of away. His nose nudges her wrist, gentle and sure, as if answering the part of her that cannot steady itself.

Pip
You do not need to carry this alone.
Vaelira bows her head. Tears slip free, catching in her lashes, and her hand trembles where it rests in Pip’s fur.

Pip
Caelen was important to both of us. That is enough to make the ache real.
The fox presses his forehead to her knuckles and holds there, patient as moss. The woods stay hushed around them, all root and leaf and breath.

Pip
Show me the page when you are ready. I will stay.
“His touch causes her to cry. It's not his fault, but it's comforting to have someone to still rely on when life is more often cruel than not now a days. "If you ever change your mind... If it ever becomes too much, or it is not safe... please take care of yourself first. I cannot lose you too." Her other hand reach out and she guides the fox into a soft yet desperate hug. "And we're not going to talk about me crying, this didn't happen..." She tries to cover how she feels with a weak laugh and then brings a hand up to wipe away her tears. She takes a deep breath in, and when she is ready she reaches back down to the page to read it's content and decipher the hidden lead.”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled -1)
Vaelira lets the document slip flat onto the moss, then lifts a hand toward Pip instead of the page.

Vaelira
If you ever change your mind, if it becomes too much or unsafe, take care of yourself first. I cannot lose you too.
Pip leans into her arms, and the charm beneath the vellum gives a sudden hard shiver, as if jolted by the touch and then by whatever steadies her breath.

Vaelira
And we are not speaking about me crying. That did not happen...
Her weak laugh breaks the tension. She wipes her face, inhales once, and returns to the page.
The shaking makes the hidden script stand out, a narrow trail of ink pressed between the lines of the visible text: a place name, a direction, and a warning that points away from the estate and toward an old meetstone in the woods.
Vaelira reads it cleanly, and the lead is no longer hidden. Pip waits at her knee, eyes fixed on her hands, as the forest around them holds still.
