The wrist-mark erupts with pale light just as Vaelira’s fingers near the iron lock. Shadows stretch and shiver across the buried chamber, and the cold in the air turns sharp enough to sting.

Within the shimmer, a figure gathers from distortion and memory, wind-tousled hair first, then a familiar, crooked grin. Pip presses close with a mournful whine, ears flat, tail tucked.

The sigil... it is his.

The crescent dagger on Vaelira’s wrist burns brighter, its light answering the shape before her like a lock finding its key. Old magic wakes in the stone and the iron both.

You were marked by blood-oath, not by chance. That seal is yours to open, Vaelira, if you still dare claim what was promised.

The figure in the light holds its grin for one aching heartbeat, then the chamber deepens around it, waiting for Vaelira to choose whether to reach for the lock, the memory, or the man who should not be here.

Vae forgets the lock. For once, there is no clever answer waiting behind her teeth. Her hand falls slowly to Pip's head, fingers disappearing into his fur as she stares at the impossible figure before them. “No.” The word comes quieter than she intends. She takes one cautious step toward the light. “You don't get to look at me like that.” Her jaw tightens. “Not after what happened.” Then, barely above a whisper: “Are you really here?”

Vaelira’s quiet word hangs in the cold, and the chamber answers at once. The apparition steadies, the grin fading into something almost tender as the light gathers around his face.

I am here enough to hear you. Not enough to touch, perhaps, but enough to speak.

Pip lifts his head from Vaelira’s hand, hackles still raised, and fixes the phantom with wary, unblinking eyes.

The seal is reacting to him. Or to what he means. Look at the script, Vaelira, it is opening for your blood and your memory both.

What it entitles you to is not coin, not land, and not apology. It is a claim. A right to name what was hidden, and to take up what was set aside for you.

The black iron lock gives a soft, terrible click. One seam in the stone brightens, as if something old and sealed has just heard its own name.

If you want the rest, Vaelira, you have to decide who you are willing to trust with it.

Vae barely seems to hear Ashen now. Her eyes remain fixed on the apparition. “You always did have a talent for making simple things sound impossible.” The edge in her voice almost hides the ache beneath it. Almost. Her fingers tighten gently in Pip's fur. “Before you disappear on me again… tell me something I should already know.” She swallows. “Your name.”

Vaelira does not look away from the phantom. The chamber seems to hold its breath as her question lands, and the light tightens around the shape before her.

Caelen.

The name settles in the cold air like a bell note cut short. Pip’s ears twitch once, then flatten again, his gaze fixed on the spirit.

You remembered enough to call me back, or close enough to matter.

There, you have it. Not a trick of the seal, then. A person, or what remains of one.

The seam in the black stone brightens a fraction more, a thin line of light threading beneath the iron lock while dust shivers loose from the panel.

The lock answers to your blood, Vaelira. My name only tells it I am not a stranger to the door.
