The antechamber shivers as the ledger goes still in Vaelira’s hands. Ahead, the black basin’s silver light gutters low, and the House feels hollowed out around a buried pulse.

Caelen

Caelen

It is deeper than the shrine. Vaelira, this is the heart of it.

Pip pads tight to her heel, hackles raised. Caelen stands near the basin, pale and unsteady, watching her with shame and resolve.

Mara

Mara

Break the ledger’s claim, not your own. If the House drinks the last of you, it keeps the story.

Dalen

Then cut the root at the center. I will hold the door, if it tries to close.

The basin stirs. Thin runes kindle beneath the floor, threading toward Vaelira’s wrist like hungry veins. The air turns cold enough to sting.

The mark is answering. So is the House.

Caelen takes one careful step back, giving her the space to choose. All eyes turn to Vaelira as the silver light gathers, waiting for her decisive move.

Vaelira grips the ledger and steps toward the basin. “Enough. No more claims, no more debts, and no more pieces of me.” She uses her silver mark as the key it has proven to be, turning the House’s connection against itself. She severs the ledger’s claim at its root without offering herself, her memories, or Caelen in exchange. “This ends with me—but I do not belong to you.”

Vaelira steps in, and the basin answers. Silver runes race from the floor into her wrist, then buckle inward as she turns the mark against the House’s hunger.

Vaelira

Enough. No more claims, no more debts, and no more pieces of me.

The ledger gives a dry, final shiver. Its pages loosen from the hidden claim beneath them, and the dormant charm inside goes black and still.

Vaelira

Vaelira

This ends with me, but I do not belong to you.

A thin crack of light snaps through the basin’s silver pulse. One bitter flare bites Vaelira’s wrist, and the pull cuts off at once.

Caelen

Caelen

It is broken. Vaelira, you did it.

The chamber goes abruptly colder, but the House’s grip is gone. The ledger rests dead in her hands, and every eye waits on what the silence leaves behind.

By all the gods, it is done.

You broke its grip. I thought we had lost you.

Not today. Take the others and keep moving.

Dalen

The house is dying around us. That was a fine moment to choose survival.

Pip

Pip

I vote we never come back here.

They left the collapsing House behind them, the ledger cold and silent in Vaelira's hands. Behind stone and dust, the old magic came apart in a final, bitter hush. Outside, their breath steamed in the open air, and for the first time in far too long, the night felt like a mercy.
