Mara’s warning hangs over the shrine as she points to the crystalline pool at its base. The water looks impossibly clean, almost kind. That is the lie.

Mara

Do not drink it, Vaelira. It is not blessing water. It is a snare. The House uses it to take what a person is, piece by piece.

The pool answers with a faint, hungry shimmer. The silver tether at Vaelira’s wrist burns hotter, and the boundary stones seem to recoil from the surface.

Caelen’s gaze fixes on the water. Recognition flickers across his face, sharp and sudden, as if some buried memory has found its shape again.

I press my silver-marked wrist against the boundary stones to reinforce our anchor. Vae's eyes stay glued to Cael, her other hand staying with his. She gives a firm squeeze as to say 'im still here', though her eyes show tears beginning to form. "Pip." Vae starts in a stern voice "Do not approach that water, stay here with us at all costs."

Vaelira drives her silver-marked wrist to the nearest ward-stone. Light surges through the carved seams, and the shrine answers with a hard, clean hum.

The tether flares brighter instead of straining, its glow settling into the stone circle like a nail driven deep.

Vaelira

Pip. Do not go near the water. Stay with us.

Pip freezes at the edge of the pool, ears high, then backs away from the glittering surface without taking his eyes off it.

Mara

Good. Hold the anchor there. The pool has already shown its teeth.

His grip tightens once, then steadies, his other hand lifting in a small, protective reach toward Vaelira's wrist.

The crystalline water dims to a dull, watchful gleam. The shrine no longer feels like shelter, only a place to stand while the forest waits outside.
