The boundary stones fall behind them as the woods thicken, swallowing the last silver hum. Roots knot over old earth, and the air turns damp with moss and fern. At last, a small hollow opens beneath a leaning ash, sheltered from the wind and hidden from the shrine.
Vaelira leads the way into the hollow, boots silent on the leaf-mold. Pip slips in beside her, nose lifted, ears twitching at every creak in the dark. Behind them, Caelen stumbles once, his shape flickering at the edge of the roots.

Caelen
I am still here. Just... give me a moment.

Mara
We take it. But only one. This place will not hold us long if the House finds the trail again.
Dalen circles the hollow’s rim, scanning the canopy and the black seams between trunks. He kneels, presses two fingers to the ground, then rises with a grim shake of his head. No tracks nearby, at least none fresh.
The little refuge settles around them, all wet leaves, pale roots, and breath held too long. For the first time since the shrine, the woods do not feel like a blade at their backs, only like a watcher keeping its distance.

Find secure shelter for Caelen
“Can we use my silver mark to mask our presence from the House while we rest?”
NO (Likely, rolled 77)
Vaelira presses her palm against the stone, attempting to draw the silver light into a shroud, but the sigil only pulses with a harsh, rhythmic flare that illuminates the hollow instead of hiding it. The mark refuses to dampen, its cold radiance bleeding through the cracks in her skin and casting long, betraying shadows against the ash tree.
“"Mara, prepare a bed for Caelen.... Dalen watch for lanterns and please try to cover us with vines / branches..." Vae instructs while kneeling next to Cael and encouraging him to rest for a moment. "Please, my love, do not strain yourself... I know we have so much to do, but I cannot lose you to something silly when I am so close to getting you back once more."”
FAILURE (Great Diplomacy, rolled -4)

Vaelira lowers herself beside Caelen, the bright sigil painting her hands in silver as she tries to turn the glare into shelter. It does not dim. Instead, the light catches every root and fern in the hollow, making hiding places look thinner than skin.

Vaelira
Mara, make a bed for Caelen. Dalen, watch for lanterns, and try to cover us with branches.
Dalen shifts to the edge of the hollow, but the light leaves him too exposed to do more than crouch and scan the treeline. Mara gathers fallen fronds, yet the shadows they cast are weak and broken under the sigil's spill.

Vaelira
Please, my love, rest for a moment. Do not strain yourself.

Caelen
I am trying. It is just... hard to keep shape when that mark burns so bright.

Mara
Then do not waste strength pretending otherwise. Let the light show us what must be covered.
Caelen eases down against the ash roots, one hand still half-raised as if reaching for something just beyond him. The gesture falters before it finds purchase, and his breathing goes thin in the hollow air.
Pip slips in close to Vaelira's knee, ears forward, while the others settle into a rough, uneasy watch. The shelter is real enough to crouch within, but not yet secure, and the silver blaze keeps betraying every movement.
“"Mara, what do I do.... I thought the sigil could protect us. I don't want to be the reason for anyone else getting hurt!" Vae exclaims desperately, already taking a step back and trying to cover her sigil with the sleeve of her clothing”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

Vaelira
Mara, what do I do? I thought the sigil could protect us. I do not want to be the reason anyone else gets hurt.
Vaelira steps back and yanks her sleeve over the blazing mark. The cloth darkens at once from the heat of the light, but the silver still leaks through in thin, accusing seams.

Mara
Then stop fighting the light like it is an enemy. Shape the reach of it. Breathe, and think of a place it can belong.

Caelen
If she can hold it steady, I can keep my shape.
Caelen’s hand lifts again, reaching with the same weak, searching motion, and this time it holds a little longer before trembling. The silver glare loosens around his outline by a hair.

Mara
Good. Keep your wrist angled toward the roots, not the treeline. Make the hollow take it, not the forest.
Vaelira follows the guidance, and the light gathers lower, skimming the ash roots and the fern bed instead of blasting outward. The hollow does not go dark, but the spill turns inward, quieter and easier to bear.
“I keep the sigil turned toward the roots”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Vaelira keeps her wrist canted toward the roots, and the silver obeys. It pours low now, threading through bark and fern instead of flashing across the hollow.
The ash roots answer with a pale sheen, drinking the glare without letting it spill beyond the brush screen.

Mara
Good. Hold it there. Let the tree take the burden.

Caelen
That... is better.
Caelen’s outline steadies against the roots, and his reaching hand hangs in the light a moment longer before easing down.

Dalen
If the hollow can hold that glow, it might hold him too.
For the first time since they ducked beneath the ash, the forest outside stays blind to them. Inside the hollow, the silver settles into a guarded hush.
