The inn wraps around them in warm timber and low candlelight. Rain ticks softly at the shutters while roasted meat and ale blur the cold from Vaelira’s bones. At the corner table, Dalen sets the ledger between them and waits, letting the quiet settle.

Vaelira
The ink is older than the binding.

Dalen
You look like you trust the pages less than you trust me. Sensible, probably.
Pip stretches along the bench, then curls tighter between them, one ear twitching toward the innkeeper behind the counter. Dalen’s bandaged hand rests near the ledger, careful, almost respectful.

Dalen
Caelen never liked stillness. He used to call it the sort of thing that gets honest people buried. I liked him for that, even when it was inconvenient.
He opens the ledger a fraction, enough for Vaelira to see tight columns, old seals, and a few names crossed out in hard strokes. The candle flickers over the page and catches the tired edge in Dalen’s face.

Dalen
Take your time. If there’s a truth in here worth hating, I’d rather we both see it before the ale goes flat.

Decide whether to trust Dalen with the truth
“Vae leans in to examine the crossed-out names in the ledger, while also pushing a mug of ale closer to Dalen at the same time. "Then best to drink before it has that chance." she responds with a small smile.”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled -3)

Vaelira angles the ledger toward the candle and traces the crossed-out names with one gloved finger. The ink is cramped, deliberate, and old enough to smell of dust and rain. With her other hand, she nudges the mug across the table until it rests within Dalen’s reach.

Vaelira
Then best to drink before it has that chance.
The ale sloshes against the rim and spills a thin dark crescent over the wood. Dalen’s gaze drops to the page, then to the mug, and he gives Vaelira a tired, surprised look.

Dalen
You move like every page might bite. Fair enough. That one, though... that name was crossed out after Caelen vanished.
Pip lifts his head at the change in Dalen’s tone, ears pricked toward the table. The fire snaps softly, and rain threads the shutters like impatient fingers.

Dalen
He trusted me with parts of this before the House took him. I did not understand half of it then. I may understand less now.
Vaelira finds the crossed-out line cleanly enough to make out a second, smaller mark beneath it, the Ashroot House sigil pressed so lightly it might be missed in poor light. Dalen sees the same thing and goes still, one hand curling around the mug.

“Trace the Ashroot sigil with my finger to see if it reacts to my touch.”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled -1)

Vaelira’s finger rests on the hidden sigil, then slides along its pressed edge. The mark is colder than the paper, and for a breath the candle flame leans toward her hand.

Vaelira
It answers.
The Ashroot signet darkens under her touch, not with ink but with a faint, living shadow that gathers in the grooves. Dalen’s mug pauses halfway to his mouth.

Dalen
That seal should be dead. It was never meant to wake for anyone but a keeper.
Pip rises on the bench, tail tight and ears forward, staring past the table as the room seems to listen. Rain ticks harder at the shutters.

Dalen
Look closer. The crossed-out name is not erased. It is a warning, or a claim. I cannot tell which.
Beneath Vaelira’s fingertip, the hidden sigil gives one slow pulse of violet light, and a second line of script bleeds up beside it, as if the ledger has just decided to speak.

“I show Dalen the ledger and wait”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +0)

Vaelira eases the ledger across the tabletop toward Dalen and lets her hand fall away. The violet script keeps pulsing between them, reflected in the ale spill like a second, colder candle.

Dalen
You trust me enough for that, then?
Pip shifts on the bench, watching Dalen more than the book. His ears angle forward, then flick once toward Vaelira, as if weighing the answer with her.

Vaelira
The ledger is open. Now he chooses what to show.

Dalen
Caelen used to say a page can lie by what it hides, not only by what it writes.
Dalen sets his mug down untouched. He does not reach for the ledger yet, only studies the bleeding line beside the crossed-out name, jaw tight with something older than suspicion.

Dalen
I did not tell you everything at the shrine. If this mark answers you, then Ashroot did not simply take him. It marked him for return.
“"What does that mean...? Is he being called to the shrine just as we are?" Vae inquiries while reaching over to take a sip of her own ale. Maybe alcohol can ease the blow of all this information. More importantly, a piece of meat is offered to pip”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled -1)

Vaelira
What does that mean? Is he being called to the shrine just as we are?
Vaelira reaches for her ale and takes a careful sip. The drink is bitter, but it steadies her hands. Beside the ledger, Pip noses the offered meat and settles lower on the bench, ears still pricked.

Dalen
Not called, exactly. Drawn. The shrine is a mouth for old oaths, and Caelen has the shape of one they remember.
Dalen’s gaze stays on the violet sigil as it throbs once under the crossed-out name. He finally extends two fingers, not touching the page, as if the ink might sting him through the air.

Dalen
If the mark wakes for you, it means the shrine can still feel your line. It may be waiting for both of you.

Dalen
And if it is waiting, then someone has kept the path alive on purpose.
Pip crunches softly at the meat, then flicks his gaze from Dalen to Vaelira, tail tip twitching once. The ale darkens the edge of the table where Vaelira’s cup rests, and the ledger’s violet pulse paints all three of them in brief, cold flashes.

Dalen
Tell me something true, Vaelira. When the house marked you, did it feel like a summons... or a warning?
“"Personally? A warning... but I have never been placed in a situation like this. I admittedly cannot tell the difference between what may be a calling, and what may be a warning...." Vae exhales heavily and lowers her head, struggling with the back and forth in her mind. "Im not exactly the most trusting person, but the last 24 hours have forced me to completely shift my mindset..."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Vaelira lowers her cup and lets the silence sit for a breath. The ledger’s violet pulse strobes across her knuckles, Dalen’s sleeve, and Pip’s bright eyes as the fox stays curled between them.

Vaelira
Personally, it feels like a warning. But I have never been in anything like this. I cannot tell the difference between a calling and a warning anymore.
She exhales and dips her head, the movement small but real. Pip stops chewing to glance up at her, then back to Dalen, as if measuring whether the air has changed.

Vaelira
I am not exactly trusting by nature. The last day and a half has forced me to change that, whether I like it or not.

Dalen
A fair confession. Wisdom is not the same as trust, though. The house often borrows both words and makes a trap of them.

Dalen
If it is a warning, it may still be meant for you. If it is a calling, then someone wanted you to live long enough to hear it.
Dalen finally eases back in his chair, one hand flattening beside the open page. The cold flashes from the sigil catch the edge of his tired smile, and the inn’s warm candlelight returns between pulses.

Dalen
Tell me, Vaelira, when the mark woke on your skin, what did it feel like before the fear caught up?
“The elven woman's empty hand naturally reaches for her mark on her other arm, almost in an instinctively protective way. Not because of what it represents now, but what it used to represent, which is her bond with Cael. "A burning sensation, otherwise the same sense of being overwhelmed mentally." She admits while slumping back in her seat. She pats her lap, offering Pip to come sit as a quiet request for comfort”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Vaelira’s free hand rises at once to the crescent dagger on her wrist, thumb brushing the old mark as if to steady it. The ledger’s violet flare catches the gesture and turns her fingers pale for a heartbeat.

Vaelira
It burns. The pressure is still there, but the sensation is sharper now.

Vaelira
A burning sensation. Otherwise, the same feeling of being overwhelmed.
She slumps back in her chair, letting the tension leave her shoulders in one slow release. Her other hand pats her lap once, an unspoken invitation to Pip.
The fox answers without hesitation. Pip springs down from the bench, paws thudding softly on the floor, then climbs onto Vaelira’s lap and folds himself into a warm, tight curve.

Pip
Safe here.

Dalen
That is new information, and useful. Pain like that usually means the house is speaking through the mark, not merely touching it.

Dalen
If it feels like this, the shrine may answer in kind. Or it may be listening for you already.
“"Then we get some sleep... prepare ourselves in the morning and set out for the shrine." Vae mutters, her gaze breaking from Dalen and the ledger and instead seeking out other inn members who are eating and talking. The temptation to have a body share her bed tonight is burning inside of her, to provide an escape from what is her new reality. Perhaps she can share a drink with someone and convince them to join her for the night, though she finds her eyes falling back on Dalen to see how he responds first.”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Vaelira’s gaze slips from the ledger to the room beyond, over tankards, crusted bread, and low hearthlight. She rises with care, leaving Pip curled warm against the chair and Dalen watching the movement without following.

Vaelira
Then we sleep, and leave at first light for the shrine.
The innkeeper, a broad woman with flour on her sleeve, glances up as Vaelira approaches the counter. A few patrons murmur over their drink, but no one interrupts.

Innkeeper
A room, or a room with company? Because there’s both, if coin speaks clearly enough.
Vaelira’s answer is soft, but it lands. The innkeeper’s expression shifts into knowing amusement, and she hooks a key from a peg without asking anything further.

Innkeeper
There’s a traveler in the back who’s lonely enough for one night and discreet enough for another. If that’s what you’re after, she’ll likely say yes.
Behind Vaelira, Dalen does not speak at once. When she glances back, he meets her look with a tired, level stillness, then lowers his eyes to the ledger as if deciding not to weigh in.

Dalen
Go on, then. We leave before the road wakes. I’ll keep the book and the table until you return.
{"action":"Vae runs her tongue over her teeth, as if battling with a deep internal question. Should she complicate a newfound relationship, or just merely have some fun? Her gaze shifts to the woman the innkeeper had recommended. Definitely a woman soft on the eyes, and someone who Vae wouldn't mind sharing a bed with. Before making a decision though, she decides to turn her charm back on and makes her way back over to the table where Dalen sits. They are both broken people, who are bare a weight heavier than anyone else in the room
(besides pip) could understand. She leans down just enough to lower her voice and whisper in his ear. \"Join me tonight then? You look like you need an escape from what our reality has become.\" There's a brief pause as she looks down at his untouched ale. \"I won't be offended if you refuse... though you may live to regret it.\" Followed by a light chuckle to try and ease any tension that may be forming","outcome":"success","trait":"Diplomacy","traitLevel":"Great","roll":3,"register":"social","commitment":"committed","committedIntent":"invite Dalen to share a room for the night","shade":"yes_and","sceneTitle":"An Invitation and a Discovery","location":"a cozy roadside inn common room"}

Vaelira turns from the counter and glides back to the table, the inn’s warmth catching on the silver in her ear. The ledger’s violet pulse washes over her hand as she leans in beside Dalen, close enough for only him to hear.

Vaelira
Join me tonight, then? You look like you could use an escape from all this.
Dalen’s gaze lifts from the open book to her face, then flicks once to the untouched ale. The hard line of his mouth loosens by a fraction.

Dalen
You are reckless with invitations, Vaelira.
A beat of silence passes. Then he reaches for the tankard, not drinking yet, just holding it like a decision he is making slowly.

Dalen
Still... yes. I will share the room.
At the next table, the innkeeper’s amused look sharpens into approval, and she slides a second key onto the counter without comment. The ledger gives one cold violet flare, as if pleased to have been outvoted.

Dalen
But before we climb the stairs, look at this. The names beneath the stains are travel marks, not tallies. Someone was moving the lost, not simply hiding them.
“"Some say reckless, others say fun." She responds while lowering her hand. A gentle finger caresses under his mug of ale, which hovers between himself and table as he continues to toy with the idea of actually taking a sip, and she attempts to gently push the mug closer to his lips. An act of encouragement, but also a secret attempt to help him loosen up. Maybe there won't be as much regret in the morning. She does take his words seriously though despite the action. "And that was not Caelen?"”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Vaelira
Some say reckless, others say fun.
Vaelira lowers her hand from the ledger and nudges Dalen’s mug closer with a careful touch, just enough to coax rather than command. He lets it come, thumb still circling the rim, and takes the smallest sip.

Dalen
That was not Caelen. The marks are older, a route of movement, not his hand.

Vaelira
And that was not Caelen?

Dalen
No. Caelen left signatures. These are directions, or warnings. Someone was passing people through the old roads beneath the House.
The violet glow in the ledger thins to a steady pulse. Dalen sets the mug down at last, and the spill on the table spreads in a dark crescent between his knuckles and the page.

Dalen
If we are right, the shrine is not our destination. It is where the path begins to answer.
“"Then we worry tomorrow..." Vae commands in a gentle voice, letting one hand reach out to gently brush against his shoulder and work her seductive charm. She shouldn't be targeting a man like this... a man with a head on his shoulders, one motivated by the truth and to do the right thing. She should turn her attention to the woman the innkeeper recommended, however.... there's something about Dalen that keeps drawing her back in. Her other hand reaches out for her own mug and she shoots back what remains in her mug of ale. "We know where we need to go next, and we cannot control what has happened in the past, or what happens in the future." Her voice remains gentle and encouraging to the man she had only met a few hours ago. "You live with guilt just as I and Pip do.... Let your mind and body rest for more than 5 minutes, Dalen. Please..." That being said she takes her empty bug back to the innkeeper to clean, while also retrieving the other key.”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +2)

Vaelira
Then we worry tomorrow.
Vaelira lets her hand rest on Dalen’s shoulder, light as a promise, and drains the last of her ale in one swallow.

Dalen
Tomorrow is still a long way off.

Vaelira
We know where to go next. The past and the future can wait.

Vaelira
You carry guilt, and so do we. Rest for more than five minutes, Dalen. Please.

Dalen
You say that like rest is a simple thing.

Dalen
...But all right. For now, I will try.
Vaelira returns with her empty mug, and the innkeeper hands over the second room key without a word. Dalen watches her go, then looks down at the ledger as its violet pulse thins to a steady, watchful thread.
“Vae returns with both keys. Typically her bed is shared by either a random body whom she shares no emotional attachment with, or with Pip curled at her feet. If this goes the way she wants, then perhaps pip would be best off in one of the rooms alone. She lays the keys out on the table in front of Dalen and the ledger, though one key lays closer to Pip, meaning the fox has the opportunity to sprawl out on a bed by himself tonight. She glances up at Dalen with a hopeful gleam in her eyes. No words need to be exchanged. He can take the key that separates himself and Vae, to express that they will share a room tonight, or he can take the key closer to pip, meaning that Dalen will stay in a room by himself.”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Vaelira sets both keys on the scarred tabletop, one near Dalen, one closer to Pip, and lets the choice sit there without a word.
Pip leans toward the nearer key, nose twitching once, then settles back as if he understands the shape of the night.

Dalen
He studies the two keys, the ledger, and Vaelira’s face, then reaches for the one set apart from the fox.
The ring of metal is soft, but final, as Dalen takes the room key that means distance from both of them.

Dalen
I can sleep alone. Keep the other room for you and Pip.
Pip gives a tiny huff, then stretches across the bench with clear approval while the ledger’s violet thread stays steady between them.

Dalen
For tonight, that seems the wiser bargain.
“Vae takes a slow deep breath in, nodding in understanding though there is a flicker of disappointment on her face. "Then I wish you a good night, Dalen... shall you need anything, I am merely a room away." Her glance shifts to Pip, with that usual look on her face that says 'I'm not done yet'. Her normal habits post Cael's death always revolve around finding someone to fill the empty space he left. Does she fall into that habit, or should she focus on her new purpose on life and get some rest? The habit wins. "I'll be back Pip, stay here and be a good boy." Vae says gently before leaving the two to seek out the woman the innkeeper originally recommended”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Vaelira answers with a slow nod and a measured breath, keeping her tone easy even as the edge of disappointment passes across her face. The room’s firelight catches the ledger’s thin violet thread between them.

Vaelira
Then I wish you a good night, Dalen. If you need anything, I am only a room away.

Dalen
And if you hear trouble, do not be brave alone.
Pip’s ears tilt toward Vaelira, and she turns that familiar, fond look on him, the one that asks for a little more without quite saying so.

Vaelira
I’ll be back, Pip. Stay here and be good.
The fox gives a soft huff, then settles tighter against the bench as if granting permission. Vaelira leaves the table with quiet purpose, the inn’s warmth giving way to a narrower corridor and murmured voices beyond.
At the end of the hall, the innkeeper’s recommended room is not empty. A woman sits by a dim lamp, turning a wine cup between her hands as Vaelira steps in.

Mara
You’re later than I was told. Come in, if you mean to stay.
“"My apologies for keeping such a beautiful woman waiting..." Vae says with a shy smile gracing her lips, and she steps into the room. "Is there any way I can make it up to you?"”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Vaelira steps fully inside, and the door eases shut behind her. The room is small, lamp-warm, and private, with the woman and the table set like a quiet challenge.

Vaelira
My apologies for keeping such a beautiful woman waiting.

Vaelira
Is there any way I can make it up to you?

Mara
That depends, are you making an offer, or just a flattering entrance?
Vaelira’s smile lands shy and real enough to soften the moment. The woman’s mouth quirks in response, and the wine cup lowers a fraction.

Mara
Come sit, before I decide you mean to tease me to death.
Vaelira crosses to the table, and the old tension in her shoulders eases by a careful degree. On the wall beside the lamp, the shadow of her wrist mark flickers once, violet and brief.
“Vae nods and takes a seat across from the woman, offering to pour more wine while looking studying the details of her face and allowing her to speak first”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

Vaelira gives a small nod and takes the offered seat. The chair legs whisper over the floor as she settles across from the woman, and the bottle tilts in her hand, ready to pour.

Vaelira
Let me pour.
She pours the wine with an easy hand, then lets her gaze linger on the woman's face, taking in the curve of a smile, the watchful eyes, the faint flush of lamplight on her cheek.

Mara
Polite, attentive, and dangerous in such a tidy little package. I approve.

Vaelira
Her accent is local. Not a servant, not a stranded traveler either.

Mara
You look like someone who only relaxes when the room has been searched twice. That true?
Outside the window, the night stays black and patient. Inside, the wine gleams dark between them, and the violet flicker on the wall fades to a thin, watchful sheen.
“Vae shakes her head as if to say no, but the soft laugh that escapes her lips says otherwise. She takes a sip of the wine first, as if it will give her the bravery she needs to be herself and not the newer woman she has become over the past day and a half.... Or is it that she has become her old self, a personality when Cael was around physically, and the other was a coping mechanism during his absence? Regardless she reaches out an open palm for the woman to take. "You've caught me... I'm Lira'”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Vaelira gives a tiny shake of her head, then lets out a soft laugh that betrays her. She lifts the wine and takes a careful sip before anything else, as if the heat of it can lend her the shape of herself she wants tonight.

Vaelira
You caught me. I am Lira.
She extends an open hand across the table, palm up, the silver in her rings catching the lamp's dim glow. The violet sheen on the wall stays faint, but it watches.

Mara
Lira, then. I like a name with teeth hidden in it.

Mara
And that laugh, that is not the sound of someone who wants to be left alone.
Her fingers close around Vaelira's hand in a warm, brief clasp. The contact is easy, but the woman's gaze flicks once to the ledger, then back again, measuring the cost of trust.

Mara
I am called Mara. If you are going to sit in my room and drink my wine, I would rather know what sort of trouble you are trying to outrun.
“Vae clenches her jaw for a fraction of a second. She gave an alternative name so there would be no emotional attachment, and one-night stands are not meant to pry. Still, she gives the woman a chance and allows her fingertips to trace the woman's palm. "Trouble that requires safe company in bed to make me feel alive and like a normal person once more." Vae answers, being ambiguous with her answer along with a seductive gaze, praying internally that Mara asks no more questions.”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Vaelira lets the silence breathe for a heartbeat, then turns her palm into Mara’s hand and lets the contact linger. Her jaw tightens once, just enough to betray her, before she smooths it away behind an easy, dangerous smile.

Vaelira
Trouble, if it helps me forget myself for a while. Safe company, a warm bed, and no questions until morning.
Mara’s brows lift, amused rather than shocked. She does not pull back. Instead, her thumb makes a small, thoughtful pass over Vaelira’s knuckles, as if reading a line of script there.

Mara
That is a polished way to ask for mercy.

Mara
You wear your distance beautifully, Lira, but you do not sound like a woman who has been sleeping peacefully.
The violet shimmer on the wall thins to a hairline glint as the room settles around them. Mara’s gaze flicks once to Vaelira’s wrist, then returns to her face, warm and incisive at once.

Mara
Tell me one honest thing, then. Not your whole history, just one.
“Vae tilts her head a bit to the side, intrigued by how Mara is not spooked by the answer. "Honestly? Depends on what level of emotional baggage you care to deal with should you still want to provide company." This is followed by more of a dry laugh. Vae is showing a crack, her emotional vulnerability is still lingering after her day with Dalen. Otherwise, she would have just made up something to appease Mara, however tonight it seems like Mara has the opportunity for some actual truth.”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Vaelira
Honestly? That depends on how much emotional baggage you can handle if you still want my company.

Vaelira
She is not flinching. That is… new.
Vaelira lets out a dry laugh, small but real, and the edge in her shoulders eases by a fraction. The violet glint on the wall holds steady, thin as a blade.

Mara
I can handle more than a polished excuse in a pretty cup.

Mara
Try me with something true, then.
Mara’s thumb shifts once over Vaelira’s knuckles, not pressing, just staying. Her smile softens into something patient.

Mara
If I am being offered the mess, I would rather know the shape of it.
“Vae shakes her head, more so at her own shock that she is actually admitting to this. "Then you are correct, I have not slept peacefully since the day my lover had passed.... That was years ago, and..." Vae pauses, as if considering that she's said too much. She presses on. "and I've been trying to fill the void since. I am not a good person with the way I navigate relationships, and you have caught me in a night of vulnerability. Should you chose to change your mind, I would not blame you. I have an empty bed and a fluffy companion to keep me company if not you tonight..."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Vaelira
Then you are correct. I have not slept peacefully since the day my lover died. It has been years, and I have been trying to fill the empty space ever since.
Vaelira gives a small shake of her head, as if the words surprise her as much as they do Mara. The lamp’s warmth catches on the silver in her ear while the violet glint on the wall stays thin and patient.

Vaelira
I am not gentle with relationships. You have caught me on a vulnerable night, and if you change your mind, I would understand.
Her fingers remain open on the table, then ease back a little, making room between them instead of taking more. Pip stirs on the bed in the corner, a soft rustle in the quiet.

Vaelira
I have an empty bed, and a fluffy companion to keep me company if not you.

Mara
That is not the same as telling me who you are, but it is honest.

Mara
Stay, if you want. Speak plainly, if you can. I would rather meet the real shape of you than the polished one.
“Vae's eyes narrow slightly, a clear indication that she is puzzled by Mara's willingness to learn more. Her gaze shifts to pip, who is lounging on the bed behind the women, as if to ask 'Do I trust this given what we've been through in the past two days?' "Then what is it specifically you would like to know? Forgive my apprehension, as it is also protection." Protection for herself, or for the person she's considering sleeping with? "But... I do want to try for you..."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

Vaelira lets the question settle, then answers with care. The edge in her shoulders eases, not gone, but no longer braced for flight.

Vaelira
Then tell me what you want to know. Forgive my caution, it is also protection... for me, and for anyone I let close.
Mara’s gaze stays on her, steady as the lamp between them. The violet line on the wall gives a faint, patient pulse.

Mara
I want the truth of the shape you live in, not the polished edges. What do you protect first, when no one is watching?

Vaelira
Pip is still on the bed behind them, a quiet weight in the room.
Vaelira glances back toward the bed, then returns her attention to Mara. The movement is small, but it opens the space between them instead of closing it.

Vaelira
I protect what is mine to keep safe. That is usually coin, distance, or a door left locked. Tonight, I am trying something less simple.

Mara
Good. Then start with the part you never say first.
Pip’s ears lift on the bed, and the room falls into a listening hush, waiting on Vaelira’s next choice.
“The elven woman's eyes shift back to Pip. "I protect him." She states plainly while gesturing to the fluff on the bed. "And he protects me... but he was my lover's companion. Everyone wakes up with some kind of purpose, and for me... that is Pip." Her eyes stay on the fox as she speaks, as this is the first time she has ever verbalized this. They had originally only tolerated each other's company over the shared grief of Cael's 'passing', but as years went on it turned into a true partnership. "I navigate each day and each adventure with him in mind, as he is worth more than any amount of coin could ever amount to."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Vaelira’s gaze slips to Pip, and the room seems to narrow around the little fox on the bed. Her hand lifts in a small, honest gesture toward him.

Vaelira
I protect him. And he protects me. He was my lover’s companion, and now he is mine.
The words land cleanly. Vaelira does not reach for them again, only keeps looking at Pip as if saying them aloud makes them truer.

Vaelira
Everyone wakes with some purpose. For me, it is Pip.
Mara’s expression softens, not with pity, but with recognition. The violet shimmer on the wall gives a quiet pulse, then stills.

Vaelira
I move through each day with him in mind. He is worth more to me than any coin.

Mara
Then he is not a burden you carry. He is part of the road that kept you alive.
Pip stays very still on the bed, ears forward. Mara lets the silence breathe, waiting to see what Vaelira lets in next.
“"He is..." Vae nods her head in agreement, and lets the silence fall between the two women as she continues to think. "And with all due respect, Ms. Mara..." Vae begins as she stands up. A hand reaches into her pocket to seek the feeling of a cold metal coin. "I believe that I should take his comfort into consideration more often. I do genuinely apologize for wasting your time." The hand comes out of her pocket as she gently lays the coin on the table between the two women. Enough to cover the room, and the wine consumed. "But I do believe that perhaps spending time with him is... more important." She speaks slowly, studying Mara's reaction. Is she offended? Is she someone spying trying to find out more information? Her gaze shifts back to Pip, and she gesturing with a slight tilt of her head for him to rise from his spot on the bed and to go to the door so they may leave the room and retire for the night in their own room”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +1)

Vaelira rises, coin glinting briefly as it leaves her pocket. The little turn of her wrist is enough, the room and wine paid in full.

Vaelira
With respect, Mara, I should have taken his comfort into account more often. I apologize for wasting your time.
She sets the coin between them, then tips her chin toward Pip.

Vaelira
But I think his company matters more tonight.

Mara
Then go to him. That answer is plain enough.
Mara’s gaze follows the coin, then lifts to Vaelira with calm, unoffended curiosity. Pip pushes up on the bed at Vaelira’s signal, ears pricked, ready to pad to the door.
“Vae respectfully dips her head to Mara, and joins Pip at the door, opening it up for him the two to leave. Next on the agenda, find their own room and get some rest for tomorrow's adventure with Dalen.”

Vaelira dips her head to Mara, then opens the door for Pip. The fox slips out first, and she follows, leaving the warm room behind for the quieter hall.
“I head to our room and rest”
SUCCESS (Fair Health, rolled +3)

Vaelira crosses the hall with quiet steps, the lamp glow thinning behind her. Pip pads ahead, and the open doorway gives way to the dimmer hush of their room.
Inside, she eases the door mostly shut. The bed waits in the corner, and the violet shimmer on the wall holds to its faint, watchful line.
Pip circles once on the coverlet, then settles with his nose tucked toward the room, ears still angled to the hall.

Mara
If you mean to rest, take it properly. The house, the road, whatever follows, will still be there by morning.
Vaelira lets the latch catch softly. The little room becomes all shadow, wool, and the steady breath of the inn beyond the door.
The crescent dagger mark on her wrist glints once in the low light, then goes still as she settles where the bed is warmest.

Mara
Go on, then. I will keep the lamp low, unless you would rather speak before sleep takes you.
“Is Mara hiding why she came here?”
YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 10)

Vaelira
Her eyes are too steady, and she knows far more about the Ashroot sigil than a casual traveler should.

Mara
You look at me as if you are measuring the distance between my words and the truth, Vaelira. I did not come here by chance, and I am not merely waiting for the morning.
Mara shifts, the lamplight catching the sharp, knowing set of her jaw as she finally drops the pretense of a simple inn guest.
“Any act that Vae may have been performing drops at a dime. "I did not tell you my full name." The elven woman says sternly, her eyes glistening with a sudden short temper at what could be considered a mistake on Mara's part. She had been so respectful to the 'traveler' she was meant to share a bed with tonight, and this is how she is repaid? Rest really does not exist now that Cael is back in her life, even if just as a ghost for now.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Vaelira lets the silence sharpen, then cuts through it with one cold sentence. The false traveler mask slips from Mara’s face as recognition flashes there, quick as a blade.

Vaelira
I did not tell you my full name.
Mara’s mouth tightens. She does not deny it. Instead, she draws a slow breath and straightens, as if bracing for the shape of the truth.

Mara
No. You did not. That means I knew enough already, and too much besides.
The lamp wavers lower, and the shadow of Mara’s profile stretches across the table, thin and severe. The room feels smaller for it.

Mara
I came because your name was spoken near the old road, and because the House still listens for the one who bears its mark.

Mara
If you want my true purpose, ask it plainly. I am done pretending to be only a stranger in an inn.
“Vae snaps quickly in Pip's direction then points at the door, indicating he should push it shut with his body weight. At the same time her other hand reaches for one of her blades to prepare herself. Perhaps this is a lot more aggressive than it should have been, but Vae is taking no chances, especially with Dalen not around. "What do you know about the house? What is your REAL name?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Vaelira moves first, sharp and economical. She snaps a look to Pip, then points at the door. The fox rises at once and throws his weight against it, shoulders braced. Her other hand slides to a dagger hilt.

Vaelira
What do you know about the House? What is your real name?

Mara
Mara. That part was never a lie.

Mara
And the House, it made itself known to me before I ever came near you. I have walked its roads, read its signs, and watched it keep what it takes.

Mara
I came to see whether the mark on your wrist was an echo, or an answer.
The door thuds under Pip’s weight and stays shut. Mara does not move for it. She only looks past Vaelira’s blade, then back to her face, as if measuring how much truth she can afford.

Mara
If you want the rest, ask for it plainly. I will not waste your time with pretty lies.
“"That you've made clear." Vae says dryly, her nose twitching in annoyance. This damn mark, how does Mara know about it too as it's been covered this whole time? "What did the house take from you?" Vae asks while still keeping up her same guard up. There is no raising or lowering of the dagger, but she is on high alert right now.”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -2)

Vaelira
That you've made clear.
Vaelira keeps the dagger level. Her nose wrinkles once, a flash of annoyance she does not bother hiding. The question lands cleanly, and the room seems to tighten around it.

Mara
It took my voice first. Then my name in the House records. People remembered me badly, or not at all, whenever I crossed its thresholds.
Mara lifts her chin, but her fingers curl once at her side. The lamp gutter throws her shadow long across the floorboards, and the ledger’s hidden mark seems to watch from the table.

Mara
That is how it takes. Not with spectacle. With pieces.

Vaelira
What did the House take from you?

Mara
My brother. Not dead, not exactly. Taken into the old roads, then returned to me wrong, if he returned at all.
The answer leaves a small, ugly silence behind it. Mara’s composure holds, but only just, and Vaelira’s blade stays fixed as the lower light catches the Ashroot sigil on the ledger.
“Finally Vae decides to lower the dagger a bit, but she looks back at Pip to gauge his reaction to all of this. "My apologies for your experience... and for the hostility..." That is spoken genuinely, but there is still caution on the elven woman's face. "Im sure you can understand why I am so guarded currently... especially if our lives are tied together under common ground."”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Vaelira eases the dagger down a handspan, enough to soften the threat without hiding it. Her gaze flicks to Pip at the door, reading his braced posture before she looks back to Mara.

Vaelira
My apologies for your experience, and for the hostility. I am guarded for reason, especially if our lives are tied together under common ground.

Mara
Her shoulders loosen a fraction, though her eyes stay sharp. Not trust, yet. But not dismissal either.

Mara
That is honest enough for now.
Pip’s ears tilt back, then forward again, as if weighing the room and finding it less dangerous. He keeps his weight near the door, but the tension in his spine eases.

Mara
I did not come to be your enemy in this room. I came because the House has a habit of dragging the wrong people into the same dark current.

Mara
If you keep speaking plainly, I will do the same. Tell me what you want from the truth, Vaelira, and I will tell you what it costs.
“I tell Mara what I want from the truth”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Vaelira lowers the knife fully, not as surrender, but as an invitation to speak without steel between them. The ledger’s violet sigil gives a faint pulse under the lamplight.

Vaelira
I want the truth that matters, not the polished kind. Who is moving people through the House, and why does my mark answer it?

Mara
That is the right question. The House does not only hide people, it sorts them, names them, and sends them on.

Mara
Some are taken. Some are guided. Some are marked because someone expects them to survive what comes next.
Pip shifts on the threshold, watching Mara now instead of the door, while the room seems to shrink around the ledger’s quiet glow.

Mara
Your mark is not a warning carved for strangers. It is a road-sign. Someone inside the House meant for you to find this trail.
Mara sets two fingers against the table’s edge and leans in, her voice dropping as the lamp gutters lower.

Mara
If you want the rest, we speak like this now, plainly. Then you decide whether the road to the boundary shrine is a rescue, or a trap.
“"This is information I have already learned tonight. If you want to be useful, tell me something I yet do not know." Vae says plainly. "Is the shrine I am mean to visit a trap? And what does the name Caelen mean to you?"”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +2)

Vaelira
This is all information I already have. If you want to be useful, tell me something I do not.

Vaelira
Is the shrine I am meant to visit a trap? And what does the name Caelen mean to you?

Mara
Caelen is not a stranger to me. He passed through the House's roads, and he came back changed, carrying the smell of vows that had been broken and remade.

Mara
The shrine can be a meeting place, or a snare. It depends on who arrives first, and what they bring with them.

Mara
If Caelen led you there, then he meant for the road to be read, not simply walked. That is never gentle.

Mara
I know his name because the House still keeps it in its mouth. Some names become keys. Some become wounds.

Mara
So, Vaelira, will you follow that road with your eyes open?
“Is Mara still speaking for the House?”
YES (Even, rolled 26)

Mara
I do not speak for the House, Vaelira. I speak for the debt that remains when the House is finished with its harvest.

Vaelira
Her words carry the same cold weight as the sigil itself, confirming she is still tethered to the very thing she claims to despise.

Mara
You think you have severed your ties, but you only cut the surface. The roots go deeper than your blade can reach.
“"And what does the name Dalen mean to you?" Vae asks sharply, leaning back. She is receptive to the information, but this is still information she has already gathered from Caelen's blood-brother earlier before”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled -2)

Vaelira
And what does the name Dalen mean to you?
Mara’s gaze tightens, and the faintest crease appears between her brows. She glances once toward the ledger, then back to Vaelira.

Mara
It means I have heard it before, in places the House should never reach. Dalen does not travel alone.
The words land hard. The lamp gutters, and the shadows stretch farther across the table, as if listening.

Mara
He is known to the road-keepers. Or to what remains of them. That is not a small thing.
Mara’s hand shifts, brushing the edge of the table. The movement is careful, but not entirely calm.

Mara
If Dalen has found her, then the path is already splitting.
“At the end of the day, it is only Pip whom Vaelira can trust. She immediately looks to him, knowing that they have spent most of their day with Dalen who is now asleep and preparing to visit the shrine tomorrow morning with them. Whom are the two to trust? Mara, or Dalen? "What are road-keepers...?"”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +2)

Vaelira lets the question settle, then looks down to Pip first. He is still on the bed, ears pricked toward the door, but his weight eases when she meets his eyes. The ledger lies open between her and Mara, its violet seam breathing faintly in the lamplight.

Vaelira
What are road-keepers?
Mara does not answer at once. She shifts her stance, glancing toward the sleeping shape in the next room, then back to Vaelira as if choosing what can safely be spoken.

Mara
People who kept the old routes, before the House swallowed them. Couriers, guides, smugglers, witnesses. Some carried messages, some carried names, some carried children.
Pip gives a low, questioning huff from the bed, tail curling once against the blanket. Mara’s fingers rest near the ledger, but do not touch it.

Mara
If Dalen is known to them, he is not merely a hunter. He has a place in the old network, or in what survived of it.
The lamp dips again. In the sudden dimness, the Ashroot sigil on Vaelira’s wrist catches the light for a breath, then fades to a dull violet thread.

Mara
As for trust, I would not trust the road. I would trust what someone risks to bring back through it.
“"Dalen disclosed that he can assist in bringing back Caelen, even if he is not the same man he once was... similar to your brother. He blames Caelen's capture on himself. But you reference whoever visits the shrine first... if Dalen has alternative desires, should I not be going with him tomorrow?"”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +0)

Vaelira
Dalen says he can help bring Caelen back, even if he is changed, and he blames himself for what happened. If he has another reason to go to the shrine, should I be going with him tomorrow?

Mara
Yes. Go with the one who names his fear. That matters more than the one who only names the road.

Mara
If Dalen hides another desire, you will see it in the way he reaches for the shrine. But if he is honest, then he is not leading you away from the truth.

Mara
Her gaze drops to the ledger, then to Vaelira's wrist, as if measuring which thread in the room pulls hardest.

Mara
The first person there does not own what waits inside. The shrine answers to blood, memory, and whatever was promised there first.

Mara
So yes, go with him. Not because he is safer, but because he is already tangled in the same knot as you.

Mara
And if he falters, you will know before the shrine does.
“"Is there anything else we should know...? Before we sleep for the night?" Vae asks genuinely and in a soft and unsure voice while gesturing to pip”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Vaelira
Is there anything else we should know before we sleep tonight? ...For Pip too.
Mara lets the silence sit a moment, then nods once, slow and thoughtful. The lamp sinks lower, and her hand lifts from the ledger as if the book has said enough for one night.

Mara
Yes. Two things. First, the shrine will not ask the same question of both of you. Second, whatever answers there, it notices who flinches.

Mara
The House likes honesty, but it likes witnesses more. If you go in together, stay close enough to share what you see.
Pip shifts on the bed and gives a soft, impatient huff toward the door, then settles again with his chin on his paws. Mara’s gaze follows him, and a faint crease eases from her brow.

Mara
As for your fox, he should not drink from any water left under old stone. If there is a bowl waiting, let it be empty.
Vaelira’s wrist mark gives one dim, reluctant pulse, and Mara’s eyes flick to it, then away. She reaches for the room key, but does not take it yet.

Mara
Sleep lightly, Vaelira. Tomorrow, the path may open cleanly, or it may ask for something named first.
“"Thank you, Mara..." Vae and pip prepare to sleep”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Vaelira
Thank you, Mara.
Mara studies her for a beat, then lowers her gaze to the ledger and gives a small, accepting nod. The room feels quieter for it.

Mara
You do not need to thank me for warning you. It is the least useful thing I can do, and still safer than silence.
Pip hops down from the bed and pads to Vaelira’s side, brushing her ankle once before circling the blanket on the second chair. The lamp gutters, throwing their shadows long across the floorboards.

Mara
Your fox has better instincts than most people I have met. Keep him close tomorrow.

Vaelira
The mark on her wrist is quiet again.
Vaelira eases herself down beside the chair and begins to settle in. Mara slides the room key onto the table at last, then draws her hand back from the ledger as if giving the night its turn.
