The forest tightens around the path, twisted trunks leaning inward like listeners. Ahead, the rocky pass opens into a thin seam of pale light, the threshold the House has been drawing you toward.

Pip bristles at Vaelira’s heel, and the pressure in the air suddenly shifts. A silver thread of ward-light flickers between the roots, then gutters low, as if something has noticed you and chosen to wait.

We are close. If the House wants a toll, it will take it here.

Then we do not give it anything it can use. Not lies, not panic.

Vaelira reaches the broken line of stones at the pass. The hidden ledge beyond is etched with old sigils, half-swallowed by moss, and the air beyond it shivers with the House’s attention.

Caelen

Caelen

Vae, if you step through, it will hear all of us. Whatever you choose, choose it knowing that.

Get past the House's sentinels

Does the ward-light react if I channel my silver energy into the ground?

YES, AND MORE (VeryLikely, rolled 13)

Vaelira presses her palm against the cold, mossy earth, forcing her silver-marked wrist to bleed its light into the soil. The ground shudders violently, and the ward-light at the threshold does not merely flicker, it erupts into a blinding, jagged violet lattice that seals the pass entirely.

Caelen

She has woken the entire foundation, and now the House knows exactly where we stand.

Vae clenches her jaw and looks up at the group, her eyes landing on Pip. Keep him safe, he's the most important one here. "You all find another path... I'll push through alone."

Vaelira’s voice cuts through the crackle of ward-light. Pip’s ears prick at once, and he shifts closer to her boots, watching the violet lattice as if measuring the danger for himself.

No.

The fox darts to her heel, then stops, torn between staying and running. The silver veins in the stone answer Vaelira’s choice with a sharp pulse, and the ward-light parts just enough for her to step in alone.

A hot sting bites her wrist as she crosses the threshold. The pain is brief, but bright, and the House’s attention snaps inward like a caught breath.

Vaelira... it noticed you.

Behind her, the pass holds the others in wavering violet shadow. Ahead, the sentinels stir in the dark stone, and a low groan rolls through the ground as if the House is turning to face her.

I signal Pip to circle the threshold and slip through before the sentinels awake

Vaelira lifts two fingers, a tiny circling motion toward the rock edge. Pip catches it at once and springs away from her boots, vanishing along the broken seam of stone.

The fox hugs the threshold wall, low and swift, while Vaelira stays still in the flare of silver veins. The sentinels do not wake all at once, they hesitate, as if the House is listening through them.

Pip slips through a narrow gap where the ward-lattice is thinnest, his red shape momentarily swallowed by dark stone. A pulse of pale light answers him, then goes quiet again.

Inside the threshold, one sentinel turns its face toward the breach, not fully roused, but aware. It does not strike. Instead, the nearest rune vein opens like a vein in the earth, revealing a second passage tucked behind the first wall.

The back route is open.

Pip reappears on the far side, ears flattened, then flicking once toward the hidden way as if to tell her it is clear. The House has not caught him. It has shown her where it thinks she should go.

A deeper groan rolls through the threshold, and the shadowed opening waits.
