The upper floor of the estate is all hush and velvet, the masquerade orchestra softened to a pulse through the floorboards. Vaelira slips into the private study, moonlit shelves and ledgers glinting around her like a trap waiting to smile.

Pip is a red blur at her heel, then stills. His hackles rise toward the heavy curtains, every line of him sharp with warning.

A shadow stirs behind the fabric. Not the drift of cloth, but the careful shape of someone standing very close, very quiet.

Do you truly believe the object is worth the price of your life?

Vaelira

Vaelira

The room has only one obvious exit.

The curtains part just enough to show a gloved hand, a sliver of silvered mask, and the poised edge of a man who sounds entirely unalarmed.

Set the target down, and perhaps we both leave this study breathing.

Get past the masked intruder

Vae makes no move to set the object down. One dagger remains loose at her side as her pale eyes study the masked man, measuring his stance, his weapons, the window, and every possible route out of the room. “You know,” she says quietly, almost conversationally, “most men buy me a drink before threatening my life.” Her gaze flicks briefly toward Pip before returning to the stranger. “So tell me. Are you protecting this thing, or were you planning to steal it yourself?”

Vaelira’s question hangs in the moonlit hush. The masked man does not shift his feet, but his gloved hand turns palm-up in a small, measured gesture, as if weighing her words like coin. He is not near the desk. He is closer to the curtains, and that detail matters.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

Protecting? Stealing? In a house like this, those are often the same prayer in different clothes.

Pip gives a low, sharp chuff from below the line of sight, his warning aimed past Vaelira rather than at her.

Ashen Vale

If you are here for the ledger, then you are already late.

Vaelira

Vaelira

Then you have time to explain why you are still standing in front of it.

At that, the man tips his masked face toward the desk, not Vaelira. The jewelry box is not where her eye first lands now. Its lid stands a finger’s width wider than before, and the lock on the ledger drawer looks freshly picked.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

Because the thing you were sent to steal is no longer where you think it is.

Vae’s expression barely changes, but her attention snaps toward the disturbed drawer. She crosses to it without turning her back fully on the masked man, crouching just long enough to inspect the freshly picked lock and whatever remains inside. Pip’s warning is not ignored; she trusts his instincts more than she trusts most people. “Cute,” she murmurs. “So there are three thieves in this room, and somehow I’m the one being threatened.” Her pale eyes lift to the masked man. “Who got here first?”

Vaelira slips to the drawer in a low crouch, keeping the masked man in the edge of her vision. The picked lock yields to a touch, and inside she finds not coins, but the ledger itself, wrapped in oilcloth and pressed beneath a thin charm of warding glass.

Vaelira

Vaelira

Cute. So there are three thieves in this room, and somehow I’m the one being threatened.

Pip holds his ground below the desk, ears forward, every line of him taut with warning. The Hidden Voice tilts his masked face toward Vaelira at last, and one gloved hand drifts closer to the curtain fold, calm as a blade being drawn halfway free.

Vaelira

Who got here first?

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

Not you.

If you want the truth, then look at the glass.

The warding charm cracks with a soft, bright shiver in Vaelira’s hand, and the oilcloth slips enough to show an inner seal marked with the same crescent dagger sigil on her wrist. Somewhere beyond the study, a latch clicks open, and cold air brushes in from the hall.

Ledger

Vae goes utterly still when she sees the sigil. For the first time, the practiced amusement leaves her face. Her thumb brushes unconsciously across the matching mark on her wrist before she pulls her sleeve over it. She closes her hand around the ledger and rises slowly, pale eyes fixing on the masked man. “You knew.” It isn't a question. She takes one measured step toward him, dagger still held loosely at her side. “Forget who sent you. Tell me why that mark is on this ledger.”

Vaelira stills at the sigil, and the study seems to tighten around the silence. She covers the mark on her wrist, then closes her fingers around the ledger and lifts her gaze to the masked man.

Vaelira

Vaelira

You knew.

Vaelira

Vaelira

Forget who sent you. Tell me why that mark is on this ledger.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

Because it is not your employer's mark.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

It is a claim, old as the house. I came for the ledger before the wrong hands could bury it.

As he speaks, his gloved hand eases open, empty now. The hall draft slips colder through the study, and the warding glass in Vaelira's hand sheds a faint crackle of light.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

If she sees the seal, she can still choose what matters more, the book or the exit.

Vae’s grip tightens around the ledger. Her eyes flick once toward the open doorway, then back to the masked man. She makes no move toward the exit. “You keep telling me what the mark belongs to.” Slowly, deliberately, she pulls back her sleeve and exposes the crescent dagger on her wrist. “I’m asking why it belongs to me.” Her voice lowers. “And choose your next words carefully. You seem to know considerably more about me than I know about you.”

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +2)

Vaelira’s sleeve slides back, and the room goes still around the pale crescent dagger on her wrist. The ledger hangs steady in her grip. The masked man’s attention drops to the mark, then lifts to her face.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

Because it is yours.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

Or was, once. That seal is older than this house, older than your theft.

Pip shifts his weight near the desk, ears pricked hard toward the man, while the warding glass in Vaelira’s hand gives off another weak pulse of light.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

I am not your employer’s trap. I am the one keeping this ledger from the wrong hands.

Vaelira

Vaelira

Then speak plainly.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

Plainly, then. The book names a hidden claim in this estate, and your mark matches the claim-tether. You are tied to it whether you knew or not.

He does not move from the curtains. Instead, he extends one empty palm toward the ledger, cautious, almost formal, as if waiting for Vaelira to decide whether the truth is worth handing over.

Vae looks at his outstretched hand, then deliberately tucks the ledger against her body instead. “No.” Her gaze returns to his mask. “You know my mark. You know what it means. You knew what I would find here, and somehow you knew enough about this job to arrive before me.” She takes a slow step closer. “So before I hand you anything, you’re going to give me three things: your name, what exactly this ‘claim’ entitles me to, and who you believe the wrong hands belong to.” A faint, humorless smile touches her mouth. “Consider it the price of doing business.”

Vaelira’s refusal lands in the hush of the study. The masked man lets his extended hand fall, not offended, only weighing her. Pip stays low beside the desk, every line of him tight with suspicion.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

Three things, then. My name is Ashen Vale, though you will not find it in any honest ledger.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

The claim is inheritance by blood and oath, not coin. That mark on your wrist binds you to a lock beneath this estate, and what it keeps was never meant for your employer.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

As for the wrong hands, I mean the house steward, the one who sold access, and anyone paid to strip the truth from this room before dawn.

The warding glass in Vaelira’s grip flares weakly, then goes dim. Ashen shifts one step out from the curtain, enough for the study’s hidden doorframe to show behind him.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

If you want the ledger and the claim intact, you will need to choose which one leaves with you.

Pip’s tail snaps once toward the newly exposed doorway, and the room waits for Vaelira’s answer.

Learn what the claim entitles Vaelira to

Vae studies the hidden doorway, then Ashen, her expression cooling as the pieces settle into place. The ledger remains tucked securely against her. “You have an irritating habit of presenting choices before explaining their consequences.” She nods toward the passage. “If I take the ledger, what happens to the claim? If I follow you through that door, what happens to the ledger?” Her eyes narrow. “And don't tell me to trust you, Ashen. We haven't known each other nearly long enough for you to disappoint me.”

You have an irritating habit of presenting choices before explaining their consequences. If I take the ledger, what happens to the claim? If I follow you through that door, what happens to the ledger?

Vaelira

Vaelira

And don't tell me to trust you, Ashen. We haven't known each other nearly long enough for that.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

Fair enough. The ledger alone is only proof. The claim wakes when the marked heir stands where the ward was sealed.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

Take the ledger, and you carry the record while the estate stays locked to strangers. Follow me, and you see the lock beneath this room before anyone else reaches it.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

But if the house steward gets either of us first, the claim is stripped clean and buried under the morning papers.

Ashen tilts his masked face toward the hidden doorway, then back to Vaelira. The warding glass in her hand gives one last pale pulse, as if answering his words.

Ashen Vale

Ashen Vale

I am not asking for faith, Vaelira. I am asking which truth you want to stand beside when the door opens.

Vae stares at him for one long beat, then slips the ledger securely beneath her cloak. “The ledger is proof. Proof can be stolen twice.” She looks toward the hidden doorway. Pip is already watching it. “But apparently there's a door under this house that thinks I'm family.” Her gaze returns to Ashen. “Fine. Show me the lock. You walk first.” She pauses. “And Ashen? If this turns out to be an elaborate way of murdering me in a basement, I will be extremely irritating about it.”

Stay close. The lock is below, and the ward only answers to the marked.

He pulls the concealed panel wider. Cold air exhales from the passage, carrying dust, old stone, and something faintly metallic.

Vaelira

Vaelira

Lead on, then. If this is a trap, I will be difficult about it.

Ashen descends first, one hand brushing the wall for balance. Vaelira follows, her sleeve shifted back, the crescent dagger mark catching the dim light as the study shrinks above her.

Pip

Too quiet. Too deep.

At the foot of the stair, the passage opens onto a buried chamber. Runes ring a black iron lock set into a stone threshold, and beside it lies a splintered signet seal, freshly broken.
