The Path to Tartarus Revealed

The throne room stills around Hades’s restored presence. Through the balcony, Tartarus churns in jagged shadow, a wound in the earth below Corinth.

Hades

Hades

Sisyphus is there, deep in the prison strata. He is using the chambers beneath his palace as cover.

Hades lowers his arm toward the abyss, his jaw set. The route is open now, but the descent feels like stepping into a grave that is still deciding whether to close.

Ares

Ares

I am going after him.

Mnemosyne

Mnemosyne

If he reaches the tether before Sisyphus tightens it again, Thanatos may yet be restored fully.

Calliope

Calliope

Take the lower fault line. The palace wards already point that way. Do not waste time on the upper halls.

Hades steps beside Ares, grim but steady, and places the last direction in his hand. Below them, Tartarus waits, and somewhere within Corinth, Sisyphus still holds Thanatos hostage.

✓ Quest Accepted

Descend into Tartarus to reach Sisyphus

✓ Quest Accepted

Restore Thanatos fully

Ares leaves The Underworld Archives behind and arrives at Corinth.

I leap into the abyss, following the lower fault line toward the palace.

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -3)

The Path to Tartarus Revealed

Corinth’s air hits like dry stone and salt, and the palace fault line yawns at Ares’s feet. The black seam in the floor pulses once, then gives way beneath him.

Ares leaps.

He drops cleanly into the jagged descent, boots skimming broken rock as the palace light shrinks above him.

The lower fault line catches him, a slanted shelf of darkness that leads straight down into Tartarus’s breath.

Behind him, the opening narrows to a crack of black sky, and the chamber falls silent.

Ares lands hard on the next shelf, already lower than Corinth and deeper than the last wall of the palace.

Descend into Tartarus to reach Sisyphus

I descend deeper into Tartarus

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled +0)

The Path to Tartarus Revealed

Ares drives himself off the shelf and drops again, the rough stone skimming past his greaves as the abyss widens beneath him. The silence around the cut in the world feels carved out, as if Tartarus is listening.

He lands on a lower ledge with a jolt that shudders through the rock. Dust lifts in a thin sheet, then falls away into red-black darkness.

Above him, the split in the palace is already distant, a broken seam of dim light closing behind him. Ahead, the descent bends toward deeper prison stone.

Ares

Ares

The path keeps dropping.

A cold draft moves up from below, carrying the weight of old iron and sealed suffering. The ledge narrows into a stair of jagged rock, each step cut by some ancient force.

Ares lowers his stance and takes the next descent without hesitation. The darkness ahead parts just enough to show the way down.

I look for clues to find which way Thanatos was taken.

SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +0)

The Path to Tartarus Revealed

Ares slows at the stair’s edge and scans the rock with a war god’s patience, not a hunter’s haste. One streak of pale dust clings to a chipped ridge, then another deeper below, both dragged downward in a hurry.

Below the dust, a smear of dark cloth catches in a knife of stone, torn and snagged as if someone was carried hard around the bend. The trail points one way, into the deeper prison steps.

Ares

Ares

Downward. Someone dragged him this way.

A faint blue glimmer answers from the cracks under the stair, the same ward-light that marked the palace bindings, now thin and wounded. It flickers on the stone and dies, leaving a chill behind.

Ares takes the next steps at once, and the rough edge of the stair slices his palm open on the same old grip of pain. His blood beads red against black rock, but the trail is clear now.

The path ahead opens into a lower landing, where the stones bear a fresh scrape like a body was turned there. Something was taken through this way, and fast.

I follow the dragged trail downward

SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled -2)

The Path to Tartarus Revealed

Ares keeps going. The dragged trail tightens into the stair’s center, and he follows it into the lower landing without hesitation. His bleeding palm brushes black stone, leaving a red line on the rock as the blue crack-light gutters beside him.

The scrape mark is fresh enough to bite the eye. It curves hard around the bend, and the dust is disturbed by more than weight, it looks like something was hauled, then set down in a hurry.

Ares

Ares

The trail was not left by a fall.

Ares reaches the turn and the passage opens in a shallow, cramped shelf of Tartarus stone. The air changes at once, colder, thinner, and the dragged marks stop at a set of iron grooves cut into the floor.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares... here. I can hear you, but the binding is still on me.

His voice comes from beyond the bend, weak but clear, and the answer turns the trail into a destination. Ares has found the prison steps, but the scrape marks show the path was used to move Thanatos against his will, and something still holds him fast.

I go down to Thanatos

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled -2)

The Path to Tartarus Revealed

Ares drops into the trench below the landing, boots scraping iron grooves as he takes the lower step in one hard rush. His wounded hand catches the wall for balance, and the fresh blood on his palm streaks black stone while the cold deepens around him.

The prison steps narrow fast, forcing him to angle his shoulders through the cut in the rock. Dust slips under his feet, but he keeps his momentum and lands beside the groove-marked floor where the trail ends.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Careful. The binding here still bites.

Thanatos is no longer just a voice in the dark. He is there at the edge of the shelf, held low by unseen force, pale with strain but within reach of Ares at last.

Ares

Ares

He is here.

Ares plants his feet on the prison level, and the descent is done. The effort leaves his palm burning and the stair edge marked in red, but the path to Thanatos is open now.

✓ Quest Accepted

Get past the prison guards

Are there any guards nearby?

YES (Likely, rolled 47)

The Path to Tartarus Revealed

Ares shifts his weight to reach for Thanatos, but the scrape of his own boot against the stone triggers a sharp, metallic click from the shadows ahead. Two figures in heavy, spiked plate armor detach themselves from the gloom, their spears leveled at the god of war.

The Guard on the Left

The Guard on the Left

The king said no one leaves this level alive.

Ares

Ares

They were waiting in the dark.

I order the guards to stand aside or face the wrath of the gods.

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)

The Path to Tartarus Revealed

Ares’s words land hard in the prison hush. The left guard hesitates, spear tip dipping, while the right guard shifts his grip as if the darkness itself has grown heavier around them.

The Guard on the Left

The Guard on the Left

...Back away.

The Guard on the Right

The Guard on the Right

He sounds like a god. Worse, he sounds certain.

Thanatos stays bound but lifts his head, relief flickering through the strain. The iron grooves in the floor sit between them like a closed path finally waiting to be crossed.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares. Your timing remains appalling, but welcome.

Ares

Ares

Hold still. I am getting you out.

Thanatos

Thanatos

I know. You always do arrive when it matters.

The left guard lowers his spear another inch, swallowing against the pressure in the air. The right guard glances sideways, no longer eager to be first.

The Guard on the Left

The Guard on the Left

We were told to keep him here. We were not told what to do if a god came for him.

Quest Complete

Get past the prison guards

I speak calmly and offer them a way out

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +2)

The Path to Tartarus Revealed

Ares lowers his blade a fraction and lets the silence do the pressure for him. The guards do not move, but the hard set of their shoulders eases as his calm settles over the shelf.

Ares

Ares

Walk away. No one needs to die for this.

The Guard on the Left

The Guard on the Left

...If we leave, Sisyphus remembers faces.

The Guard on the Right

The Guard on the Right

And if we stay, a god remembers ours.

Thanatos watches them both, still bound but more steady now, his expression softening with a tired, knowing patience. The iron grooves in the floor seem to wait with him, cold and open to the choice being made.

Thanatos

Thanatos

He is offering mercy. That is wiser than the king deserves.

The left guard swallows, then eases his spear down to the stone. The right guard follows, not fully trusting the moment, but trusting it enough to step aside.

The Guard on the Left

The Guard on the Left

Go, then. We saw nothing but a shadow in the dark.

I free Thanatos from the bindings

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +3)

The Path to Tartarus Revealed

Ares steps in and catches the bindings in both hands. The iron groans once, then gives, as if the shelf itself exhales.

The force around Thanatos snaps loose. He stumbles forward into Ares's grip, free at last, the last of the cold grooves emptying out behind him.

Thanatos

Thanatos

It is done. I can feel my strength returning.

Thin residue of ward-light flakes off Thanatos's wrists and fades into the dark. In the same breath, the prison shelf goes still, every listening stone suddenly silent.

The Guard on the Left

The Guard on the Left

By the Styx... it broke clean.

The Guard on the Right

The Guard on the Right

Then the path is his. We are already forgotten.

Thanatos finds his footing beside Ares, no longer bound, and looks toward the open descent. Behind them, the guards keep their distance, spears lowered, while ahead the stair into Tartarus waits in the dark.
