The slab seals the east arcade with a low, grinding thud. Dust rains from the arch above, and the corridor narrows into a choking line of stone and shadow.

Merope
This way. The servant's passage opens below the spice racks, if no one has locked it.
Thanatos sags harder against Ares, his robe dragging the floor as the darkness around them thickens and pulses with each distant удар from Sisyphus' search.

Thanatos
Do not waste time on the climb. He is already close, and I can feel the wards failing.
Merope snatches the postern key higher in her fist and glances back toward the corridor mouth, where heavy footsteps and iron clangs echo nearer. The detour is now the only clean path out.
Ares commits to the servant's quarters route, hauling Thanatos with him as Merope leads them into the black throat of the palace. Behind them, Sisyphus' pursuit presses closer, and the escape turns into a race for the gate.

Escape the palace with Thanatos
“Are Thanatos’ wings in good enough condition for him to fly?”
NO, AND WORSE (Unlikely, rolled 99)
Ares shifts his grip to steady the god of death, but as he does, he catches a glimpse of Thanatos's back beneath the midnight-blue silk. The wings are not merely bruised, they are shredded and pinned to his shoulder blades by jagged, glowing shards of the palace wards.

Thanatos
They are broken, Ares. I cannot even lift them, let alone carry us both.

Ares
The wards did more than drain him, they crippled him.
“I carry Thanatos toward the postern gate”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +1)

Ares straightens, then heaves Thanatos fully into his arms, turning his body sideways to fit the passage. The god of death sags against him, light as a fallen standard, while the ward shards still glow in the torn wings behind his shoulder.

Thanatos
Do not let me drag you down. Keep moving.
Merope slips ahead in the gloom, one hand lifted to guide them, her gaze fixed on the corridor beyond the stone seal. Behind them, the fading ward-light flickers over the collapsed servant and the dark mouth of the vault.

Merope
The postern route is still open, if we reach it before the guards do.
Ares drives forward with a soldier’s stride, carrying Thanatos through the tight passage. The walls press close, and the darkness thickens around them, swallowing sound except for hurried breath and the scrape of stone.

Thanatos
The shroud is holding, but only just.
Ahead, the servant passage bends toward a low opening where cold air leaks in from the palace’s outer skin. Merope halts there and looks back once, tense and earnest, as distant footsteps begin to gather behind the sealed arcade.
“I carry Thanatos to the postern gate”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +1)

Ares powers through the bend and reaches the low opening, Thanatos held tight against his chest. The cold draft slides over them like water, and the passage beyond feels tighter than the one behind.

Thanatos
Put me through first. If I snag, leave the wings to tear.
Merope drops to one knee at the threshold and parts the hanging shadow with both hands, revealing a narrow crawl beyond. The faint ward-light behind them flickers once over the collapsed servant, then thins to almost nothing.

Merope
It opens into the outer arcade wall. Low, but clear.

Ares
The opening is lower than a man’s height.
Ares shifts his grip, then threads Thanatos forward into the crawl, shoulders first. Stone scrapes his armor, but the god of death slides through in his arms without catching.

Thanatos
Good. Keep this pace.
They spill into the postern gate chamber together, shadowed and breathing hard, with the outer door ahead and footsteps still gathering somewhere behind the sealed arcade. Merope looks to Ares, tense and waiting.
Ares leaves Postern gate chamber behind and arrives at outer arcade.
“I push through the postern gate”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

The outer arcade swallows them in stone and dim moonlight, its columns breaking the wind into thin, cold blades. Ahead, the postern gate stands shut but close enough to touch, while the passage behind exhales darkness and hurried footsteps.

Merope
Now. Before they reach the chamber.
Ares drives forward, shoulder first, and the gate gives with a hard scrape. The latch jumps free under his weight, throwing the door inward with a burst of stale air.
Thanatos clears the threshold with a hitch in his breath, his shadow-cloak dragging after him as the chamber behind them flashes with a dying lick of ward-light.

Thanatos
The seal is weakening. We have the route now.
The opening reveals a service lane beyond the wall, narrow but empty, and the cold outside air reaches Ares first like a promise.

Merope
Go. I will hold this side as long as I can.
Behind them, the footsteps grow louder at the arcade mouth, and the black of Thanatos's shroud thins against the first light of the lane.
