The Nymph's Secret Key

In the vault’s black hush, Thanatos’s shadows cling to the walls. Outside, the guards slam at the splintering door again, but the room holds.

As Ares shifts to slip past the inner side passage, a shimmer stirs behind a hanging tapestry. A pale figure steps out, half-lit like moon on water, an iron key heavy in her hand.

Merope

Merope

Do not shout. I am not here for my husband’s lies.

Merope

Merope

I want this madness ended. Sisyphus has turned this palace into a cage, and I have the key to the postern gate.

Thanatos

Thanatos

She is frightened, but that does not make her safe.

Merope lowers her hooded face, fingers white around the key. Behind her, the tapestry barely stirs, as if the wall itself is listening.

Merope

Merope

If you take it, go now. If you do not trust me, leave before my husband hears I spoke.

Take the postern gate key

Has Merope truly betrayed her husband to help us escape?

NO (Likely, rolled 76)

Ares watches the way Merope's eyes dart toward the corridor, her hand trembling not with fear, but with the practiced tension of a trap waiting to be sprung.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Her heart beats for the king, not for our freedom. She is a lure, nothing more.

The Nymph's Secret Key
Merope

Merope

If I wanted you dead, Ares, I would not have come alone. I hate the king's cruelty more than I fear his wrath.

Thanatos

Thanatos

She tells part of the truth. The rest still hides behind her eyes.

Merope

Merope

There is a postern gate beneath the east arcade. My key opens it, but only if someone reaches the latch from the far side. Help me end this, and I will open the way.

Her hand loosens on the iron key. For the first time, her gaze comes off the corridor and settles on Ares, steady and unguarded, as if she is measuring whether he is the kind of god who can be trusted with a chance.

Merope

Merope

Choose quickly. I can guide you, or I can vanish back into the walls and leave you to Sisyphus alone.

I ask Thanatos if Merope can be trusted

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)

The Nymph's Secret Key
Ares

Ares

And your answer, Thanatos? Is she lying to us?

Thanatos

Thanatos

Not wholly. She fears Sisyphus, and that fear is real. But fear can still serve a trap.

Merope

Merope

I serve no trap tonight. I serve the end of his madness, if you let me.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Her words do not ring false. Her silence does, only a little.

The key hangs between Merope's fingers, and the vault's darkness curls around all three of them like a held breath.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Take her with caution, Ares. But do not dismiss her. She knows the halls better than we do.

Merope

Merope

Then decide. If you trust me, I lead you to the east arcade.

Ares reaches in and closes his hand around the postern gate key as Thanatos watches from the shadows.
