The Siege of the Stolen Life

The passage spits Ares and Hades out onto a broken ring of stone above a vast chamber. Below, hundreds of golden threads strain toward a single pillar of light, like veins feeding a wounded heart.

The pillar pulses with stolen life, and every beat sends a shudder through the chamber. Far inside the glare, Sisyphus is visible at the core dais, arms raised, still forcing the binding closed.

Hades

Hades

There. Cut the link, and the palace stops drinking the Underworld dry.

A section of the walkway cracks under the strain. The nearest threads tighten, and a brittle span of stone opens between Ares and the central mechanism.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Do not strike the pillar itself. Break the channels feeding it, one by one.

Hades plants himself at the edge, bracing the failing floor with both hands as the chamber groans around him. Ahead, the path to Sisyphus is finally open, if Ares can reach it before the whole hall gives way.

I break the glowing threads to the pillar

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -3)

The Siege of the Stolen Life

Ares drives into the web of light, and the nearest threads snap under his grip. Golden sparks lash his forearms as the broken strands recoil from the pillar and go slack.

The chamber answers with a hard tremor. One ring of stone drops a handspan, and dust rains through the air above the abyss below.

Thanatos

Thanatos

The feed line is cut. The pillar is starving.

At the dais, Sisyphus jerks around, his hands still raised, face twisted as the glow around him stutters for the first time.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No. Keep it bound, keep it bound!

Hades presses harder against the failing edge, jaw tight, while fresh cracks spider through the platform between Ares and the center.

Hades

Hades

Again, Ares. The whole network must fall.

I break the next glowing threads

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +3)

The Siege of the Stolen Life

Ares drives into the glowing web again, both hands ripping through the next cluster of threads. They split with a sharp flare, and the light snaps backward in a shower of sparks.

The severed lines sag at once, feeding the pillar in broken pulses instead of a steady stream. The whole lattice shudders, and a hidden seam in the dais flashes open beneath Sisyphus's feet.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No, no, hold it! Hold the current!

Sisyphus throws both hands wide, but the glow around him stutters badly now, and the central ring begins to twist out of alignment.

Hades

Hades

There, Ares. It is feeding from below as well.

The broken threads part enough to reveal a narrow channel of light running under the stone, a second feed line exposed where the mechanism meets the floor. The platform groans under all three gods as dust spills into the dark below.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. Keep cutting, and the whole binding will show itself.

I cut the exposed feed line below the stone

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

The Siege of the Stolen Life

Ares hooks both hands under the exposed line and rips. The stone answers with a shriek of light, and the feed line tears free in one bright, smoking lash.

The glow in Sisyphus’s circle buckles at once. Gold drains backward into the crack, and the central ring lurches off true.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No. Keep it fed, keep it bound!

The chamber shudders harder than before. Dust pours from the rim of the dais, and the hidden channels beneath the floor begin to spit sparks into the dark.

Hades

Hades

Good. That line was masking the rest of it. Tear the next seam, Ares.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Yes. He is losing the shape of it now.

Below the broken stone, the abyss opens wider with a groan, and the platform edge starts to crumble under their feet.

I tear the next seam

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

The Siege of the Stolen Life

Ares rips at the next seam and the hidden lattice gives way in his hands. The gold thread snaps loose, then peels back from the stone in a harsh, smoking curve.

The circle in the middle of the chamber jerks sideways. One entire segment gutters out, and the far side of the ring goes dark as the spell loses its balance.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No, hold it, hold it!

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. The binding is failing now.

Hades digs in harder at the edge, boots scraping stone as the platform gives another deep groan. Beneath them, the floor channels spit sparks into the widening cracks.

The broken ring sags toward the abyss, and the central mechanism visibly loses its grip on the chamber.

Stone splits with a sharp crack under Ares's feet. The whole platform lurches, and the next collapse starts under the gods.

I tear out the remaining feed lines

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -2)

The Siege of the Stolen Life

Ares drives both hands into the fractured seam and rips. The remaining feed lines tear free in a shower of sparks, and the central ring shudders loose under him.

The hidden lattice collapses inward. Gold thread whips across the stone, then goes slack as the chamber loses another anchor and the platform drops a handspan.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No, no, keep it fed!

Thanatos lifts his head from the shadows, the darkness around him thinning as he watches the binding fail. Hades braces harder at the rim, but the floor channels spit a hotter burst of sparks beneath his boots.

Ares yanks the last snagged strand clear. The ritual ring goes half-dark, then lurches sideways, and a jagged crack races through the dais toward the abyss.

Thanatos

Thanatos

That breaks the link. Now, before it settles again.

The chamber answers with a deep groan. Stone splits under the weight of the gods, and the platform starts to sink fast, carrying them toward the open drop.

I tear out the last broken anchor

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +1)

The Siege of the Stolen Life

Ares plants his weight, hooks his fingers under the ruined anchor, and tears it free. The last binding stud screams out of the stone, trailing sparks and a spray of gold dust.

The ritual ring jolts, then gives up. Its broken segments rattle apart across the dais as the channel beneath them goes dead, leaving only the crackling hiss of failing wards.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No, wait, the link. Hold it together!

Thanatos straightens in the thinning shadow, eyes fixed on the dark ring. Hades keeps both hands braced on the collapsing rim, jaw tight as the floor shudders under him.

Thanatos

Thanatos

It is cut. The binding cannot answer now.

A deep crack races under Ares’s feet, and the platform drops another brutal span toward the abyss. The heartbeat in the floor stutters, then falters.

Stone grinds against stone as the chamber tilts. Sisyphus staggers on the far side of the ring, while the sinkline opens wider between him and the gods.
