Trapped in the Pit Chamber

The corridor shudders. Iron portcullises slam down behind them, sealing the pit chamber in a grinding roar. Ares hauls Thanatos clear as dust falls from the ceiling.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Do not stop. He means to pin us here.

At the far end of the hall, Sisyphus appears with two guards at his back. He raises one hand, eyes wide with fear and spite, and the floor ahead groans with hidden machinery.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Not another step. If death comes for me, it comes through my trap first.

Thanatos steadies himself against Ares, weak but clear-eyed. The broken wards on the pit chamber flicker out behind them, and the palace feels suddenly too small for the three of them.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, the king is mine to claim. Keep him from the corridor mouth.

Sisyphus retreats a half-step, measuring them, already looking for the next cruel bargain, the next clever trick. The guards tense, waiting for his signal.

✓ Quest Accepted

Keep Sisyphus from the corridor mouth

I lunge forward to block the corridor mouth before Sisyphus can retreat.

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled +0)

Trapped in the Pit Chamber

Ares surges ahead and lands between Sisyphus and the corridor mouth, cutting the king off with his body. The floor mechanism groans under Sisyphus’s hand, but it does not matter now, the escape line is broken.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Cowardly luck. Guards, hold him.

The left guard checks his step at the sudden block, spear wavering. The right guard tightens behind him, shield raised, but neither can reach the passage without crashing into Ares first.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. Keep him there.

Thanatos shifts clear behind Ares, breathing shallowly but free of the pit at last. The collapsed Unknown Servant lies motionless near the wall, and the chamber seems to hold its breath around the sealed exits.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

If I cannot pass, then no one does.

Sisyphus lowers his hand toward the hidden trigger again, eyes fixed on the narrow gap at Ares’s side. The guards brace for his order, and the floor begins to answer beneath their feet.

Keep Sisyphus from the corridor mouth

I hold Sisyphus at the threshold

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -3)

Trapped in the Pit Chamber

Ares drives his weight forward and the threshold holds. Sisyphus stops cold, shoulder to shoulder with the guards, unable to reach the trigger without forcing through him.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Meddling brute. You will not leave this chamber with him.

The king’s hand slaps the stone, and the hidden floor gives a hard, ugly click. Dust jumps from the seams, but the mechanism cannot break the line Ares has made.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, keep steady. He is trying to split us.

The left guard lunges and checks himself at the last instant, spear point skidding harmlessly off Ares’s armor. The right guard freezes behind him, shield half raised, trapped by his own momentum.

Sisyphus recoils a half step, then jerks his hand away from the trigger. His gamble fails, and the chamber’s pressure shifts toward him instead.

Ares holds the king at the threshold, but the impact jars his stance and a fresh sting runs through his side where the spear scraped him.

✓ Quest Accepted

Break through the blockade and escape the palace with Thanatos

Can I use the king's hesitation to break the portcullis?

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 71)

The iron portcullis remains immovable, its heavy teeth locked deep into the stone floor despite the king's momentary lapse in focus. Ares finds the mechanism reinforced by a secondary, unseen magical anchor that refuses to yield to brute force alone.

I pry at the magical anchor

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +0)

Trapped in the Pit Chamber

Ares jams his hands into the seam around the anchor and hauls. Hidden magic snaps like a taut cord, and the ward rips free in a wash of pale sparks.

The portcullis shudders, then grinds upward by a man's height, iron teeth screaming against stone. Dust pours down in a grey curtain as the lock gives way.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. Move.

Thanatos steps through the widening gap, one hand already reaching back to keep Ares with him while the passage beyond opens at last.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Stop them!

The king snaps his order as the left guard lunges toward the opening, and the chamber suddenly belongs to whoever can cross first.

I charge through the opening with Thanatos

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled +0)

Trapped in the Pit Chamber

Ares takes the opening in a burst of force, shoulder to shoulder with Thanatos. Dust whips around them as they drive through the rising teeth, leaving the pit chamber and its shouting behind in one hard rush.

Thanatos clears the threshold first, and Ares follows at his back. The corridor ahead opens under a rain of grit, while the portcullis shudders somewhere behind them.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Keep moving. The passage is ours for a breath.

Inside the chamber, Sisyphus lunges toward the gap, but the width is gone. The left guard snaps short of the opening, and the right guard recoils as the stonework buckles overhead.

The unknown servant lies collapsed near the floor seam, forgotten in the chaos, while the last of the ward-light gutters out around the torn anchor.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Close it. Now!

His order hits the corridor like a blade, but the passage is already shifting under the falling dust, and the next turn waits in the dark ahead.
