The Styx Overflows

The River Styx boils against its banks, black water heaving with pale hands and drifting faces. Ares steps onto the slick shore as cold mist claws at his armor.

At the water’s edge, Hades stands rigid and storm-eyed, his usual calm split by the chaos. He grips a staff of dark power and tries to hold the flood in place.

He turns as Ares arrives, the relief on his face immediate but grim.

Hades

Hades

Good. You are here.

Hades thrusts a heavy, iron-bound scroll into Ares’s hands. The seal is cold enough to sting.

Hades

Hades

Thanatos is gone. Sisyphus has trapped him, and I cannot leave this shore to chase the trail myself.

Behind Hades, the Styx surges again, swallowing the mud and spitting up more unrest from the depths.

Hades

Hades

You can cross where I cannot. Take the itinerary. Find him before Corinth tightens its grip any further.

The scroll weighs like a verdict in Ares’s hands. The river roars louder, and Hades looks past him to the churning dark, waiting for an answer or a move.

Rescue Thanatos from Sisyphus

+ New Item Acquired

Iron-bound scroll

Ares leaves The River Styx behind and arrives at Corinth.

I take the itinerary and set out

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

The Styx Overflows

Corinth hits him in a rush of salt wind, market noise, and sun-glare on white stone. The itinerary is tight in Ares’s grip as he comes to a stop above a canal-side street, the city waking beneath banners and gulls.

The scroll’s seal cracks under his thumb. Inside, neat marks and route names spread across the parchment, all of them pointing deeper into the city, then outward toward the palace quarter.

Ares

Ares

The route is marked in order, not random.

A bronze-smudged porter skids to a halt nearby, staring at the divine armor and then at the scroll as if he has seen a bad omen given hands.

Porter

Porter

War-god, the king’s men have been asking after strangers all morning. If you mean trouble, take the upper lane. If you mean answers, the lower road is faster.

Beyond him, a pair of Corinthian guards turn at the sound of the name, their attention sharpening as the crowd parts around Ares.

Porter

Porter

Choose quickly. Once they see you, they will decide for you.

I follow the lower road

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -2)

The Styx Overflows

Ares lowers the scroll and takes the lower road without hesitation. The lane drops fast between white walls and stacked terraces, and the city’s noise thins to footfalls, shutter creaks, and a distant shout from above.

He reaches the palace quarter in a clean rush of motion, but the broken seal in his hand has left a pale ribbon of wax on his palm. Ahead, the route forks again beside a colonnade crowded with servants carrying water jars.

The nearest guards do not stop him, yet their heads turn. One points toward the inner steps, and another reaches for his spear as if deciding whether to remember his orders.

Porter

Porter

That is the faster way, yes. It is also the way they watch.

Ares

Ares

The lower road delivers him to the palace quarter.

Ares keeps moving, forcing through the attention he has gathered. The price of speed is simple enough, his arrival is loud, and every eye ahead of him is now awake.

Porter

Porter

If you mean to press on, choose before they close the inner gate.

I press for the inner gate

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled -2)

The Styx Overflows

Ares breaks into a sprint and slips under the inner gate as it drops with a stone groan. The iron-bound scroll jerks from his grip, wax scraping the pillar, and one guard snaps a spear down too late to catch him.

He hits the far side hard, boots skidding across the threshold. The gate slams shut behind him, loud enough to rattle dust from the lintel, and the shout outside turns to angry confusion.

Porters and household runners freeze in the entry court, staring at the god who has just forced his way through. Ares still has the route, but now every face in the palace quarter knows he means trouble.

Porter

Porter

You are in, but they saw you. Go on, before someone names you to the captain.

The broken seal drops from Ares’s hand and skitters across the floor. Beyond the court, a side passage opens toward the inner halls, and fresh footsteps are already beginning to answer from deeper inside.

Ares

Ares

The route continues past the closed gate.

Ares stands inside the palace quarter at last, but the cost of entry is plain, a compromised approach and a host of watching eyes. The next corridor waits in silence, while the footsteps grow closer.

I ask the porter for a safer passage

SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled -1)

The Styx Overflows
Ares

Ares

I need a safer way through. Tell me where I can go without meeting the guards.

Porter

Porter

Yes. The spice stairs at the east service arch. They bend under the kitchens and come up by the inner laundry court. Fewer eyes, less steel.

Porter

Porter

He glances past Ares, then lowers his voice. "If you take that route, keep to the left wall. The captain’s men favor the center passage."

Porter

Porter

He swallows, weighing the god’s size against the danger in the hall. "I have seen enough brave fools for one day."

The porter’s pointed urgency eases into something steadier, almost respectful. He jabs two fingers toward the side passage, then pulls back as the footsteps deepen beyond the court.

Ares

Ares

Then I take it. Keep your head down.

Porter

Porter

Go, then. If anyone asks, I saw nothing but a draft and a broken seal.

I take the spice stairs

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -2)

The Styx Overflows

Ares slips into the spice stairs as the porter said, the narrow turn swallowing the guard line behind him. The air changes at once, thick with pepper, cumin, and old wood, and the first step creaks under his weight.

He takes the stair in a quick, controlled descent, one hand brushing the wall for balance. Below, muted kitchen clatter rises through the stone, but no one looks up in time.

Porter

Porter

Left wall. Keep to it, and they miss you.

Ares reaches the bottom landing and darts through the service bend, where hanging bundles of herbs brush his shoulder. A loose sack snaps against the corner as he passes, scattering garlic skins across the floor.

The laundry court opens ahead, busy and bright with steam. A pair of servants cross the far side without noticing him, while the inner halls loom beyond a curtained arch.

Ares

Ares

This route works. The scroll is safe, but the stair gives him away with every step.

Ares clears the last landing and reaches the laundry court itself. Behind him, the spice stairs shudder with a fresh thump, and somewhere above, a guard voice barks a question.

undefined / undefined

The Styx Overflows

Ares stops short as the laundry court answers the guard’s bark for him. The curtained arch ripples, then a line of palace servants parts in alarm, dragging a rolling screen of wet linen aside to reveal a stone niche stuffed with чуж...

Porter

Porter

That way is the king’s own service cut. I did not send you into a dead end.

He has gone pale at the stair mouth, not from fear of the guards, but from the sight of a bronze seal hanging from the curtain cord, marked with Hades’ sign and freshly broken. Someone inside the palace has already opened the route for him, or for whatever is hunting him.

Porter

Porter

I know that seal. If the palace is using it, then they are not searching for strangers anymore. They are searching for a god.

From beyond the curtain, bootsteps gather, then stop as if their owner has heard the same thing. A second voice answers, low and sharp, and the laundry steam suddenly feels too thin to hide in.

I slip through the curtained arch

SUCCESS (Mediocre Stealth, rolled +2)

The Styx Overflows

Ares slips through the curtained arch as the steam thickens behind him, and the service passage swallows the sound of the court. Wet linen brushes his shoulders while the hidden niche opens into a narrow corridor cut with drains and soot-black stone.

Porter

Porter

Go. I will not call out. If you are seen, I am a dead man.

Ahead, the passage bends toward a low workroom lit by one trembling lamp. At its far end stands a man in palace livery, half-turned from the doorway, listening hard to the bootsteps outside.

He stiffens at the scrape of cloth on stone. In his hand is a bronze keyring, and on the table beside him lies a folded garment marked with a dark funeral token.

Porter

Porter

That is no servant’s badge. Someone here serves the dead, or pretends to.

The palace noises dull for a heartbeat, then a sharp knock strikes the outer curtain, patient and official.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

Open. By order of the king, all hidden passages are to be checked.

Is the servant working for Sisyphus?

YES (Likely, rolled 45)

The Styx Overflows
Ares

Ares

The funeral token on the table matches the seal Hades gave me. This man is not just a servant, he is a jailer for the dead.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

I know you are in there, little god. Sisyphus pays well for those who keep the gates locked tight against the Underworld.

I confront the jailer of the dead

FAILURE (Great Intimidation, rolled -3)

The Styx Overflows
Ares

Ares

Step away from that door. You are done here.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

Done? No, god. I am exactly where I am paid to be.

Ares takes one step into the lamplight, and the servant's smirk thins as the shadow of the god of war fills the threshold. The keyring rattles in his fist, but he keeps it raised.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

You can glare all you like. The palace has many locks, and every one of them answers to Sisyphus.

Ares

Ares

Then unlock one.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

No. I know what happens to men who help your kind.

The servant shifts sideways, blocking the table with the funeral token and the open passage behind him. His grin returns, smaller and meaner, as if he has just decided Ares is less a threat than a test.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

If you want the road to your prisoner, god, you will have to buy it.

Is Thanatos being held here?

NO, AND WORSE (Unlikely, rolled 94)

Ares lunges forward, his hand closing around the servant's throat to force the truth from his lips. The man gasps, his eyes bulging as he gestures frantically toward the empty, cold stone floor behind the curtain.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

He is not here, god. Sisyphus moved him to the deepest pit of the palace hours ago, and the guards are already sealing the lower levels behind you.

Ares

Ares

The trail is cold, and the path back is already being barred.

Is Thanatos still alive?

YES, AND MORE (VeryLikely, rolled 6)

Ares releases his grip, and the servant collapses, his breath hitching as he points toward a faint, rhythmic thrumming vibrating through the floorboards. The sound is unmistakable, a steady and hollow heartbeat that echoes from the depths of the palace foundation.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

He lives, but he is fading. The king drains his essence to fuel the wards, and every second you waste here is a second closer to his final breath.

I head for the deepest pit

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled +1)

The Styx Overflows

Ares turns from the crumpled servant and follows the pulse in the floor. The passage drops fast, stone steps slick with old damp and palace grit, while the hollow thrum swells beneath him like a giant drum under earth.

He reaches a lower landing where the air grows colder. Torchlight thins ahead, and the corridor bends toward a deeper shaft marked with old funerary cuts, half-scraped away by hurried hands.

Ares

Ares

This is the right way.

At the bend, the palace opens into a pit chamber. Below, black iron bars frame a sealed descent, and a dim blue flicker leaks up from beyond them.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

Too late for the easy doors. The deepest pit is warded from below now.

The servant’s voice trembles behind Ares, but the way ahead is clear at last, the barred shaft waiting like a wound in the palace foundation.

From somewhere beneath the bars, a fading, chained murmur answers the pulse. It sounds human, weak, and very close.

I call down to Thanatos

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +1)

The Styx Overflows
Ares

Ares

Thanatos, answer me.

Ares cups his hands and sends his voice down into the blue-lit shaft. The chamber seems to hold its breath, then the chained murmur below wavers and turns toward him.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares... I hear you. I am here, but the ward holds me fast.

The sound rises clearer now, tired but steady, carrying the calm edge Ares knows from long lessons and longer silences.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Do not force the bars blindly. Tell me what you see, and I will tell you where the binding bites.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

He really is alive down there... if the god answers, perhaps the king's luck is not enough.

The servant swallows hard in the background, while the blue flicker from below paints Ares's arms and the iron bars in cold light.

I ask Thanatos where the binding bites

SUCCESS (Mediocre Reasoning, rolled -1)

The Styx Overflows
Ares

Ares

Where does the binding bite?

Thanatos

Thanatos

At the hinge stones beneath the pit, where the blue light gathers hardest. The ward feeds through the lower ring, under the west bar.

As he speaks, the shaft answers with a sharp throb. The blue pulse flares, and the iron bars take on a faint rattle, as if something below resents being named.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Do not strike the bars. Strike the seam under them, or the whole seal will lock tighter.

A cold spark bites Ares's palm where it rests on the lip, a warning sting from the ward. Behind him, the servant flinches at the surge and drops one key with a bright clink on stone.

Thanatos

Thanatos

I have told you true. Now choose quickly, before the chamber seals itself shut.

I strike the seam under the west bar

SUCCESS (Superb Melee Combat, rolled +2)

The Styx Overflows

Ares drives his weapon into the seam beneath the west bar. The ward cracks with a sharp blue hiss, and the lower ring buckles inward.

Stone flashes. The west bar tears free at one end, then drops hard to the floor, dragging a spray of sparks and loose grit with it.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. Now the rest, quickly.

The shaft light lurches and thins at once, as if the chamber itself has felt the break. The seal no longer holds in one perfect circle.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

You have cracked it... if the guards hear that, they will know the pit is open.

The dropped key skitters a finger’s length across the stone, jostled by the tremor, and stops beside the servant’s boot.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, the lock is yielding. Take the next bar, before the ward gathers itself again.

I take the next bar free

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +0)

The Styx Overflows

Ares wrenches the next bar free. The metal shrieks once, then comes loose in his hands, and the warding ring stutters open where it was braced a breath ago.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Yes. Hold it there. The binding is breaking cleanly now.

Blue light gutters through the widened gap, then spills downward in ragged sheets as the seal loses its shape.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

No... if the pit opens fully, the whole chamber is exposed.

The dropped key glints beside the servant’s boot, untouched, while the loosened bar hangs free of the shaft and clatters against stone.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, one more press, and the way to me opens.

I press the final bar free

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

The Styx Overflows

Ares plants his shoulder and drives the last bar inward. Stone grinds, the warding ring gives a brittle crack, and the final brace tears free into his hands.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. The seal is spent. Pull the ring clear, then look to the latch below.

Blue light collapses in a shiver down the shaft. The pit mouth opens wider, no longer held shut by the split ring, and the air from below rises cold and still.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

No, no... if that opening widens, the guards will hear it all.

Ares

Ares

The final brace is out.

Below, Thanatos shifts into clearer view through the torn circle, one hand braced on the inner ledge as if waiting for Ares to choose the next move. The dropped key lies by the servant’s foot, untouched.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, the passage is yours now. Will you take the next step, or leave me to the warded dark?

I take the dropped key

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +3)

The Styx Overflows

Ares snatches the key off the floor in one clean motion. The ring of iron bites his palm, and when he lifts it, a thin smear of blue ward-light clings to the teeth before guttering out.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. That one opens the lower latch, and the ward has marked it for you.

The servant recoils harder at the sight of the key in Ares’s hand, as if the chamber itself has just chosen sides.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

No, that is the jail key. If you take him out, the palace notices.

Below the opening, Thanatos shifts one hand to the stone and leans up into the widening light, his calm sharpening into urgent command.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Take me out now, Ares. The ward is failing, and if it fails on its own, Sisyphus will know exactly where to tighten the trap.

The pit chamber seems to hold its breath around the key, the servant, and the open shaft, waiting for Ares to decide whether the rescue begins here or the palace closes in first.

+ New Item Acquired

Jail key

I take Thanatos out now

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)

The Styx Overflows

Ares grips Thanatos under the arm and hauls. The god of death rises in one hard pull, boots scraping stone as he clears the lip of the shaft and lands in a stagger against Ares’ chest.

Thanatos

Thanatos

I am free. Keep your hold steady, the ward may yet lash at the threshold.

The chamber’s blue sheen gutters, then dies. The pit remains open, but the binding that held Thanatos is gone, cut clean by Ares’ strength.

Unknown Servant

Unknown Servant

He got him out...

At the sight of Thanatos standing upright, the servant drops to his knees. His keyring rattles against the floor, forgotten.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, this is done. You have my trust, and Hades will have the proof of it.

From beyond the chamber wall, boots thunder closer, drawn by the vanished ward. The open shaft waits behind them, and the palace has begun to notice.
