The Palace Under Siege

The gatehouse shudders again. The hidden seam underfoot yawns wider, and pale ward-light leaks up in a hard white pulse.

Hades plants himself against the cracking arch, one hand spread to steady the stone, his shadow and essence holding back a collapse that keeps spreading anyway.

Beyond the fractured floor, the new opening reveals a narrow run of ancient channels and binding lines, all of them feeding toward the palace heart. Sisyphus is not just hiding below them, he is tying his own life force into the Underworld's workings.

Thanatos lifts his head from the floor, breath thin but sharp. "If he finishes that bond, the whole palace answers to him."

The seam is the route, and the ward-light is the proof.

Stone snaps loose overhead. Hades holds the arch for one more heartbeat, but the ceiling is giving way, and the path to Sisyphus is opening at the same time the room is failing around them.

✓ Quest Accepted

Survive the collapsing gatehouse

I grab Hades and pull him toward the opening to escape the crushing stone.

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +1)

The Palace Under Siege

Ares hooks an arm under Hades’s shoulder and yanks him clear of the arch. The king lurches free as a slab breaks away where he stood, crashing into the split floor in a burst of dust and pale ward-light.

Hades

Hades

Good. Move.

Thanatos pushes himself higher on one elbow, eyes fixed on the exposed channels. The heartbeat under the stone thuds once, louder, as if something below feels the retreat.

The bond is still active. But now we have the route.

Hades turns with Ares at his side, forcing the surviving span of floor toward the opening. Behind them, the arch cracks apart in a white flurry, and the ceiling begins to drop in earnest.

The passage is lower than it looked.

Thanatos reaches toward the gap, already gathering the last of his darkness into a thin shroud. The way forward is open, but the chamber is coming down behind them.

I press Hades toward the opening

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -2)

The Palace Under Siege

Ares drives Hades forward with one hard shove, and the king catches the lip of the opening instead of the broken stone behind him. The floor where they stood splits open a handspan wider, dropping dust and a few bright chips of ward-light into the dark below.

Hades

Hades

Enough. I am through.

Thanatos lifts his hand and the thin shroud snaps across the threshold, swallowing the worst of the falling grit. The heartbeat under the stone stutters, then pounds back harder, answering their movement from somewhere deeper in the channels.

Thanatos

Thanatos

It felt that. Go now, Ares.

Ares

Ares

The opening is clear.

Ares forces Hades toward the drop and the king disappears into the exposed passage first, cloak flaring in the falling dust. The price is immediate, the ceiling gives another grinding groan, and a stone shard cuts Ares’s shoulder as he follows.

Thanatos slips after them, darkness trailing from his fingers like torn smoke. Above, the gatehouse answers with a crack like thunder, and the remaining span starts to fold inward.

Hades

Hades

The chamber is lost. Descend, now.
