Sanctuary in the Forgotten Vault

Ares eases Thanatos into the forgotten vault and lets the door settle shut behind them. Crates of grain loom in rough stacks, and dusty amphorae catch the last, dull glow from the corridor.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Safe, for the moment. He came through all that for me.

Thanatos sinks onto a crate, one hand braced on his knee. His breathing is ragged, but his gaze never leaves Ares.

Thanatos

Thanatos

You got me out. That was enough, Ares.

The distant clamor of searching guards fades to a murmur beyond stone. Here, the vault holds only dust, wine-sour air, and the thud of Ares' armor as he stops moving.

Thanatos

Thanatos

You are hurt. Not badly, I hope, but enough to matter.

Ares

Ares

The scrape stings more now that he is standing still.

Thanatos gives a faint, tired nod toward the nearest crate, as if inviting Ares to sit before the moment passes.

Stabilize Thanatos's condition

I offer my canteen to Thanatos to help him recover his strength.

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +1)

Sanctuary in the Forgotten Vault

Ares crosses the short space between the crates and crouches beside Thanatos. He sets the canteen in both hands, offering it without ceremony.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. I was starting to taste dust instead of air.

Thanatos takes the canteen carefully, as if even the motion costs him. The last blue residue from the broken ward is only a faint sheen now, and the vault stays quiet.

Thanatos

Thanatos

You did well in there. Not with force alone, either. You listened.

Ares

Ares

His hands are steady enough to drink.

Thanatos drinks, then lowers the canteen and draws one slow breath. Some of the strain leaves his shoulders.

Thanatos

Thanatos

That helps. Better than pride, at any rate.

Beyond the shut door, the guards remain only a distant murmur. In the vault, the fallen servant stays out of sight, and Thanatos keeps the canteen close for another sip.

I check Thanatos's wounds

SUCCESS (Poor Medicine, rolled +2)

Sanctuary in the Forgotten Vault

Ares turns Thanatos’s wrist, then the other, checking the pale skin beneath the sleeves and the tension in each joint. Dust shifts on the crate as Thanatos lets him, breathing shallowly but evenly.

Ares

Ares

The strain is in his hands and throat more than the cuts.

Thanatos watches him with tired patience, canteen resting against his knee. The faint ward-light along the stone wall has almost gone out.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Nothing broken, unless pride counts as a bone.

A shallow bruise marks his ribs under the robe, and there is a thin red scrape along one forearm, but the worst of it seems to be exhaustion. He exhales when Ares presses gently near the bruise, then nods once.

Thanatos

Thanatos

That hurts less than it should. Your rescue was rough, but it held.

From beyond the door comes only a distant murmur, while somewhere deeper in the vault the collapsed servant stays silent. Thanatos lowers the canteen into both hands and looks up at Ares, calmer now.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Stay a moment, if you can. Tell me what you saw when the pit opened.

I help him drink and rest

SUCCESS (Poor Medicine, rolled +1)

Sanctuary in the Forgotten Vault

Ares eases a fresh sip to Thanatos’s lips, then lowers the canteen and lets him breathe between swallows. The god of death leans back against the crate, shoulders slackening as the water settles him.

Thanatos

Thanatos

That helps. More than I expected.

Ares shifts closer on the dust-soft floor, steadying the canteen in one hand while the other rests near Thanatos’s wrist, ready if he needs support. The faint ward-light on the wall gives a weak, dying pulse and then dims again.

Thanatos

Thanatos

You did not rush the rescue when haste would have been easier. You listened. That matters.

Ares

Ares

His breathing is still shallow, but it is even now.

Thanatos gives a small, tired nod, eyes lowering to the canteen before returning to Ares. The silence in the vault feels less sharp, less like hiding and more like shelter.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Stay until I can sit without the room turning. Then tell me the rest.

Keep Thanatos hidden from the guards

Are the guards still searching nearby?

YES, BUT (VeryLikely, rolled 69)

A heavy thud echoes against the vault door, followed by the rhythmic, metallic clatter of spears being dragged along the stone floor outside. The guards are still searching the corridor, but their footsteps have slowed to a methodical, room-by-room sweep that draws them closer to the storage vault with every passing second.

Can Thanatos use his remaining strength to shroud us from their sight?

YES (Likely, rolled 42)

Sanctuary in the Forgotten Vault
Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares, the shadows still cling to me. If you can hold the door, I can weave a veil of darkness to mask our presence from their prying eyes.

Ares

Ares

He is weak, but his power over the shroud is absolute. If he can hide us, we might slip past them while they are distracted by the door.

I brace the door while Thanatos veils us

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Sanctuary in the Forgotten Vault

Ares plants both feet and drives his shoulder harder into the door. The splintering wood shudders, then holds. Behind him, Thanatos lowers his hands into the shadow pooling around the chamber.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. Keep it there a little longer, and do not let them hear you move.

The blue ward-light on the wall gutters out to a thin ember, then vanishes. Darkness gathers fast, folding over the shelves and swallowing the loose dust in the air.

Ares

Ares

The door is taking the weight. Thanatos has room to work.

Thanatos draws the shadows inward with a precise motion, and the room seems to bend around the silence. Even the pressure at the door blurs, as if the guards’ next blow strikes a place that is no longer quite there.

Thanatos

Thanatos

It is done. Their eyes will slide past this vault if they look in at all.

Outside, the pounding on the splintered door hesitates. The guards have not broken through, but their search is tightening around the vault, and someone starts speaking in the corridor just beyond the wood.
