At the foot of the hidden stair, bronze limbs snap awake in a cage of violet light. Gears grind, and the construct plants itself between Ares and the inner sanctum.

Sisyphus darts behind a pillar, half-hidden, barking orders at the thing with frantic hands. The machine does not turn toward him. Its glowing eyes stay fixed on Ares.

From the side corridor, a hooded worker stumbles into the light, one arm streaked with grease and dust. He lifts both hands fast, looking from Ares to the bronze guardian.

The Tinker

The Tinker

Wait, war-god. I know its joints. It answers the violet lash, not the king. Cut the shard on its chest, and it will falter.

Ares

Ares

The shard is the source of the glow.

The construct lunges, brass fingers scraping sparks from stone as its shadow claws stretch over Ares' boots. Sisyphus keeps retreating, suddenly less certain.

The Tinker

The Tinker

If you want the prisoner alive, strike now. I will get the way clear.

Ares surges in under the violet flare, driving his strike straight into the shard. Bronze rings out like a bell struck in a tomb.

The violet crystal bursts. Light spits across the floor, and the guardian’s chest caves inward with a shriek of grinding joints.

One bronze arm locks hard, then drops uselessly. The construct staggers, its glow guttering into ragged sparks.

The Tinker

The Tinker

That is it. Keep pressure on it, while the lash is broken!

Sisyphus flinches from the burst of light, one sleeve catching a lick of hot bronze dust. He scrambles tighter behind the pillar, breathing fast.

Ares

The shard shatters cleanly.

The guardian is not dead, but it lists open at the chest, exposed and reeling. The passage ahead clears for a heartbeat, and the Tinker points urgently into the violet-dark beyond.

Ares drives in again, and this time the guardian gives way. The split chest buckles inward, bronze ribs tearing loose as the violet light dies to a sputter.

Its remaining arm jerks once, then hangs limp. Sparks spit across the flagstones and fade in the dust.

The great construct lurches backward, its weight dragging it off balance.

With a final grinding groan, the bronze guardian collapses in a heap of shattered plates and broken joints.

The Tinker

The Tinker

Yes. Through there, before anything else stirs.

Sisyphus peeks out from behind the pillar, pale and shaking, as the passage ahead opens on a dim violet glare.

Move.

Ares steps past the cooling wreckage, his boots crunching on bronze shards. The violet glare intensifies, bleeding from a heavy iron door that stands slightly ajar at the end of the corridor.

The air here is cold, and the scent of death is unmistakable. He is behind that door.

Ares lowers his gaze to the threshold. The stone lip is bare, but a faint dusting of bronze filings clings to the seam, and one thin wire is tucked just inside the frame, trembling with the violet pulse.

Ares

Ares

The wire runs under the door.

He shifts his weight and tests the floor with the toe of his boot. The tile gives a hard, clean click, then stays dead still. No spring, no drop, no sudden grind.

The Tinker

The Tinker

Careful. Sisyphus favors neat little surprises, but that one is spent.

The Tinker leans from the corridor behind, breath held, while the iron door hangs half open and the violet glow spills wider across Ares's hands and armor.

Ares's inspection finds the way clear. The threshold holds, but whatever waits beyond is close enough to stain the air with death.

Ares catches the iron seam and hauls. The door shudders, then gives with a shriek of metal, swinging inward on protesting hinges. The violet light floods out in a hard wave, and the strain jars a raw sting through his shoulder.

Beyond the threshold, a cramped chamber opens around a bronze guardian in pieces, its shattered shell strewn across the floor like spilled armor. The air is cold, sharp with old death and fresh dust.

The Tinker

The Tinker

There. It is open now. Do not let the glow fool you, it still has teeth somewhere in that room.

Ares steps over the lip and into the chamber. His boot crunches on bronze grit, and the door behind him swings wider, making the corridor feel far away.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

He cannot have reached the inner room already...

Then the violet sheen sharpens, gathering along the far wall and throwing the shape of a chained figure deeper inside. The path is open, but whatever guards the captive is awake.

A new scrape answers from the darkness ahead, slow and heavy, as if something enormous is turning to face him.

Is the chained figure Thanatos?

The violet light pulses, rhythmic and sickly, as the shadow in the corner shifts. A tall, slender figure draped in midnight-blue silk emerges from the gloom, his wrists bound by heavy, glowing chains that hum with the same violet energy.

Ares

It is him. Thanatos is alive, but the chains are draining his essence.

Ares' voice cracks through the violet hush. In the chamber beyond, Sisyphus loses color, then loses courage, his back pressing hard against the stone.

No, no, I will, I will. Only keep that look off me.

The king scrambles to the chained god and fumbles at the nearest clasp with shaking hands. The violet glow around Thanatos flickers.

At last, the binding loosens.

Metal shrieks once, then the first chain falls slack. Thanatos lifts his bound wrists, watching Ares with grave relief while Sisyphus keeps working, pale and obedient.

There, take it, take it, just do not let him break me!

The remaining chains loosen at once, then drop from Thanatos’s wrists and shoulders in a clatter of bronze on stone. The violet light steadies around him.

Better. The seal is thinning now.

Do not trust the silence. Something in this room still waits to be fed.

Sisyphus recoils from the freed god, glancing past Ares toward the dark seam in the wall where the air feels wrong.

Is Sisyphus' trap still active?

YES, AND MORE (VeryLikely, rolled 12)

The dark seam in the wall suddenly widens, revealing a jagged, obsidian-lined maw that begins to exhale a freezing, unnatural mist. The violet light is not fading, but being consumed by the void, and the floor beneath Ares begins to vibrate with a rhythmic, predatory thrum.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

I told you it was a trap, but I never said it was only for him!

Ares hooks the loosened violet chains around Sisyphus in one brutal sweep, cinching him tight before the king can lunge or beg. The mist recoils from the binding as if it recognizes a harsher master.

He yanks Sisyphus forward and thrusts him toward Thanatos, the king stumbling into the god of death’s reach. Bronze rings scrape stone, and the chamber’s thrum falters for a heartbeat.

Thanatos

Thanatos

At last. Hold him steady.

Thanatos takes the chains in both hands and begins working with grim precision, his focus locked on the binding. Ares keeps Sisyphus pinned between them as the floor shivers under the violet pulse.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No, no, not like this...

The strain bites back at Ares, a sharp tug through his shoulders as the chain drags cold against his palms. One link splits with a bright metallic crack, and mist surges harder from the fissure.

Ares plants both hands against the torn seam and drives with all his strength. The no, is wrong, the crack buckles inward under his shove, stone grinding against stone as the opening narrows.

Cold mist lashes his forearms, then gets caught and crushed as the fissure cinches smaller. The violet pulse stutters against the floor, flickering thin and weak.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. Keep pressing.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

No, you cannot seal it, it is mine, it is meant for you...

The wall gives another harsh groan, but this time it is the crack that yields. Dust spills down in a dark ribbon, and the mist is forced back into the slit like breath driven from a throat.

Thanatos

Thanatos

It is shut enough. Watch him.

The fissure closes to a ragged seam and the chamber’s pressure eases at once, leaving only the dead glow of the violet light and the choking scrape of Sisyphus’s chains.

Thanatos watches the approach, his posture tightening as Sisyphus is forced into the open space before him.

Thanatos

Keep him still, Ares. If he twitches, I will know.

The violet flicker on the chamber floor dims further, leaving the broken bronze and the sealed wall in a tense hush.

Ares

The chamber is clear enough to move through.

You murdered your own guests for their wealth, spat on Olympus and the Underworld, and chained my mentor like an animal. You deserve no mercy, and I have none to give you.

The words hang in the dim chamber. Thanatos watches from a few paces off, still and intent, the faint violet sheen washing over his robes and the shattered bronze behind him.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

His shoulders fold inward, and for once his mouth does not find a clever answer.

I... I did what any man would do to survive. I would have made a better use of my life than Tartarus ever would.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Survival is not the same as innocence. Look at him, Ares. He understands what he has done.

Sisyphus keeps his head bowed, staring at the floor between Ares's feet. The violet flicker along the chamber stones fades to a faint pulse, and the passage behind them remains open.

Is there another threat in the chamber?

NO (Unlikely, rolled 83)

Ares scans the shadows of the chamber, but the oppressive weight of the trap has vanished. The air remains still, and no further movement stirs within the dark corners of the room.

Ares leaves Corinth behind and arrives at Underworld.

He cannot look at the steps ahead. He keeps his eyes down, breathing fast, as if the stone itself will accuse him.

There will be no more tricks from you, Sisyphus. Hades will hear this truth.

The corridor opens onto the lower passage, and cold Underworld air meets them like a verdict. Sisyphus stumbles when he sees the way back is sealed behind Ares’s passage.

Wait. I can still bargain. I can still...
