Ares and the King of Lies

Ares dives through the breach and lands hard in a cavern of black stone. The air reeks of ozone, cold rot, and old tomb dust. Ahead, a shifting void shape pins Sisyphus to an obsidian pillar, violet light pulsing through its body.

Sisyphus hangs slack and pale, while the entity feeds on him in slow, hungry waves. The seal beneath the Underworld throbs like a wounded heart, and the crack in reality widens by a finger's breadth.

Ares hits the floor, then surges up toward the pillar. The void master turns one faceless edge toward him, still drawing power, as if Ares is only another breath in the dark.

The violet pulse deepens. Every beat from the breach shakes dust from the ceiling and sends a hollow tremor through the stone, warning that the seal is failing from both sides.

Ares now stands between the breach and the thing that is climbing through it. If he breaks the siphon, the seal may hold. If he fails, the Underworld opens wider.

Ares drives his shoulder into the pillar. Black stone shudders under the blow, and the void shape jerks loose from its steady pull.

Sisyphus slams sideways, freed from the pillar and dropped hard onto the floor in a crumpled heap, gasping at the sudden loss of that hungry pressure.

The siphon spasms, violet light snapping thin and erratic around the torn connection. Dust bursts from the crack above as the chamber answers with a deep tremor.

The Void Master recoils, its shape flexing wider in the dark while the breach below throbs like a wounded heart.

For a breath, the pull on Sisyphus is broken, but the thing in the fissure still gathers itself around the pillar.
