Ares and the King of Lies

A deafening crack splits the basin. Black stone shards whip past Ares as ancient chains fail and the wound below flares into a column of void-light. The floor softens underfoot, turning slick and hungry.

Hades and Thanatos are hurled back by the blast, skidding across the chamber rim. Ares remains at the edge, staring into the widening tear where the prison used to hold.

The void surges again, and for one instant Ares sees shape in the darkness, vast and old, pressing against the torn prison from below.

Around the chamber, the violet pulse fractures into spiderweb cracks. If Ares fails here, the Underworld opens wider, and whatever sleeps beneath it spills into both worlds.

Ares studies the shifting void, realizing the presence is not of the Titans, but something far more ancient and alien to their kind. The entity does not bear the mark of Kronos, nor the familiar malice of the fallen gods.

Ares throws himself between the breach and the two gods, shield rising in a hard arc. The vortex buckles against bronze and muscle, and the spray of void-light breaks around him instead of them.

Thanatos stumbles back into the lee of Ares’s shield, one hand lifting as the chamber floor liquefies at their feet. The collapsing stone sloughs away into the spinning dark, but the gods remain covered.

The void inside the fissure pulses again, steady and immense, and the arching crack in the wall answers with a wet shudder. Behind Ares, the retreat narrows to a ragged slit of stone.

Ares plants his feet and keeps the shield up as the ceiling sheds dust and shards. Hades squares beside him, and Thanatos peers past the rim, both gods boxed in by the breaking chamber.

The breach surges wider, filling the chamber with rhythmic violet-black light.
