Corinth rises ahead, bright walls under a hard sky, but the city stinks like a field left too long in the sun. Beyond the gates, the dying spill across the road, clutching wounds that will not finish them.

Ares stands at the threshold, divine aura pressing the guards' nerves raw. Spears lift. Shields edge forward. No one wants to be the first man to test a god.

Above the walls, Sisyphus watches with a small, smug grin, hands folded as if he has already won. At his feet, a soldier twists in the dirt, eyes wide with pain and confusion, unable to pass on.

The Gate-Captain

The Gate-Captain

Hold there. By whose leave do you come to Corinth?

The guards tighten around their captain, glancing from Ares to the writhing bodies in the road. Fear fights duty in every face.

The Gate-Captain

The Gate-Captain

If you are here for the king, speak quick. If you are here for blood, you will find steel first.

A sudden cry rises from the street inside the gate, where another fallen man reaches for breath that death will not take. The line of guards wavers as the city itself seems to beg for relief.

Stand aside, fool. Your king is condemned to Tartarus by order of the gods.

The captain’s spear trembles, then lowers a handspan. Around him, the guards trade one frightened look and begin to peel back from the gate.

The Gate-Captain

The Gate-Captain

By the gods... if that is true, then this city is already lost to us.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Lost? No, captain. Corinth still stands, and so do I.

Sisyphus steps along the wall, smile thin as a knife, while the wounded in the road groan under the curse that keeps them from dying.

The Gate-Captain

The Gate-Captain

If you want the king, you will find no welcome here. But the old quarry roads below the citadel... he has men there.

The captain swallows hard and points past the gate toward the shadowed rise beyond the city, as the first line of guards fully parts and the passage opens.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the old quarry roads below the citadel

Confront the gate-captain

Can I sense Thanatos's presence near the quarry?

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 8)

Ares pauses at the threshold, his senses reaching out beyond the city walls. A familiar, cold stillness pricks at his skin, cutting through the chaotic noise of the suffering mortals.

Ares

Ares

He is there. Thanatos is close, and his essence is being drained by something dark and ancient.

The air near the quarry road ripples with a sickly, unnatural violet light, confirming that the god of death is not just nearby, but being held by a tether of stolen divinity.

I tell the gate captain that the fact that no one can die means that Thanatos is most likely in trouble, and I assure him that the rest of Corinth will be spared if he helps me find Thanatos.

He swallows hard, eyes darting toward the open gates and the wounded in the streets.

Then it is true. The king has hidden something below the citadel, where the old quarry roads split.

His grip tightens on the gate bar, not in defiance now, but in shame. Behind him, Sisyphus remains on the wall, still smiling, still watching.

The Gate-Captain

The Gate-Captain

Take the left road past the broken cistern. If you mean to reach the place they keep hidden, that is where the guards turn back.

The Gate-Captain

Go now, god of war. If there is any mercy left in this city, use it where I cannot.

Ares turns from the gate and takes the left road at once, the broken cistern looming up beside him like a cracked jaw. The air grows colder with every step, and the violet pulse ahead sharpens the shadows into spears.

Below the citadel wall, the road drops hard between toppled stones and dry reeds. The cistern’s shattered rim gapes open, and something dark has been dragged across the dust there, leaving a fresh smear that points onward.

The broken cistern marks the turn.

A shout snaps from farther down the road, followed by the clatter of armed feet. Corinth’s hidden way is no longer empty.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

You came quickly, god of war. Good. Now you may see what waits below my city.

At the same moment, the violet light flares, and the ground beyond the cistern shows the mouth of a stair cut into the rock, half masked by shadow and iron.

Ares stands at the threshold of the hidden descent, with guards ahead and the dungeon revealed at last.

I attempt to seize Sisyphus right then and there. "You have some nerve showing your face to me, mortal. Now take me to Thanatos, or I'll tear you limb from limb until you beg me to release him."

Ares closes the distance in a single hard motion and seizes Sisyphus by the front of his robe. The king’s smugness breaks as his heels scrape stone, and the hidden stair lies open behind him.

Ares

You have nerve showing your face to me, mortal. Now take me to Thanatos, or I'll tear you limb from limb until you beg me to release him.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Bold words. Yet you hold me where my guards can see.

The armed men below the descent stop short, caught between duty and fear. Sisyphus’ chin lifts, but his eyes flick once toward the stair mouth, betraying the path he does not want Ares to notice.

A low rumble answers from beneath the rock, and the violet glow spills wider across the broken cistern. The hidden dungeon is no longer only a rumor, it is the way Sisyphus just tried not to show.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

If you want your death god, follow the stair before my guards recover their courage.

He jerks his head toward the opening, half warning and half surrender, while the nearest guard raises a spear and waits for Sisyphus to decide whether Ares enters as a guest or an enemy.

Ares tightens his grip and simply holds Sisyphus there, silent and immovable.

Enough. I will take you down there myself.

The king swallows hard, then turns from the wall, all false composure gone.

He points toward the exposed stair, where the violet glow leaks up in broken strips.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

Stay close. My guards do not need another reason to be brave.

Below them, armored shapes shift aside as Sisyphus starts down first, and the hidden descent opens at last.
