Elias's truck rolls through downtown Detroit, wipers slapping rain off the glass. Thadeus scans the sidewalks, Elizabeth studies every awning, every crosswalk, every hunched silhouette.

I’m at your house now. Give me a minute and I’ll pull the files up faster.

Elizabeth glances at Thadeus, then at the cracked dashboard where receipts and invoice photos are spread like a second map. The trail is no longer a guess, it is paperwork with a heartbeat.

If Elias is on foot, he has to pass somewhere visible.

They circle a block near the business district, slowing for each storefront and alley mouth. A man in a dark coat hurries under a bank awning, but it is not him. A woman with a grocery bag heads for the bus stop, also not him.

Marla finds one clean address, and we get a route. If Elias is tied to this trail, the paper will lead us to him or to whoever is moving him.

Rainwater sheets down the windshield as the truck idles at the curb. The radio crackles, then Marla’s voice cuts in again with a sharper edge, ready with the first match from the Special Projects data.

“Seeing Thadeus's injuries from the warehouse alley more clearly, Elizabeth pulls into a gas station parking lot and treats Thadeus's injuries, giving Thadeus a bit more energy.”

Elizabeth swings the truck into a gas station lot and cuts the engine under a sputtering canopy light. Rain hammers the roof while she leans across to inspect Thadeus’s side, her expression going tight with concern.

Sit still. Let me see that arm before you start pretending it is nothing.

She peels back a torn sleeve and cleans the scrape with a damp napkin from the console, careful but brisk. The ache in Thadeus’s shoulder eases as she presses fresh gauze into place.

The cut is shallow, but it keeps dragging when I move.

There. Better than warehouse pavement, at least. You are not helping anyone by bleeding on the seat.

A clerk’s silhouette passes behind the convenience store glass, indifferent to the parked truck. Elizabeth tucks the used gauze away, then studies Thadeus’s face like she is checking for the rest of the damage.

Tell me if you need another minute, or if you want me to keep driving while Marla sends the first address.

“Thadeus warmly smiles at Elizabeth, "Thank you again. I'm okay, get on the road while I call Marla back. Hopefully she's found somewhere for us to start."”

Thank you again. I am okay, keep driving while I call Marla back. Hopefully she has found somewhere for us to start.

Good. Because if you start acting tough in this truck, I am going to roll my eyes at you all the way downtown.

Elizabeth smirks, shifts back into the driver’s seat, and puts the truck in gear. Rain streaks sideways across the windshield as the gas station lot slips past the windows.

Thadeus calls Marla back while the truck eases toward the exit. The dashboard glow catches the invoice photos and the worn notebook page in the cup holder, all that paper still feeling heavier than it should.

I have something. Not an address yet, but a storage site tied to Elias’s handwriting and two repeat payoffs. Give me ten seconds.

She sounds like she is already inside the pile of receipts. Good. Let her work.

Marla’s voice sharpens over the phone as she reads off a street name, then stops short. Thadeus hears the same pattern in her tone that he has seen in the paperwork, careful and deliberate, like someone hiding in plain sight.

Marla Brewer

Marla Brewer

Wait. There is another layer under it. Elias used a clean courier stop, and the name on it is current. I am sending it now.
