Marla snaps back to life, yanking her keyboard toward her and dragging up the camera feeds. The bunker door groans again, each impact heavier than the last.

Elizabeth plants herself in front of the car, shoulders squared, eyes locked on the door. Elias goes rigid beside the supply shelves, one hand half raised like he can stop the noise by willing it.

Marla finds the outside feed and the screen jitters on a shadowed figure at the threshold. She swallows hard, then points at the monitor for the others to see.

A tall figure fills the breach, wings spread wide, a scythe angled low in one hand. The shape is wrong in the concrete light, too clean in its outline and too calm in its approach.

Thadeus snaps his attention back to the CCTV wall, and the blur resolves just long enough to show a shape moving with impossible speed. He gets one clean read, a figure with wings and a scythe, then the image smears again as the cameras strain.

The door rips loose and slams into Elizabeth, hurling her across the bunker floor. Dust bursts through the room, and the monitor glow shakes against the concrete.

Chaos stands framed in the breach, wings spread, scythe low, while Elizabeth lies still in the back of the bunker. The torn doorway yawns open behind them, and the room waits for Thadeus's next move.

Thadeus yanks Peacebringer free and the weapon surges in his hands, swelling into a two handed blade that rattles the air with its weight. His shoulders tremble under the force of it, but he drives forward anyway.

He slashes at Chaos with all the anger in him. The blow cuts through dust and monitor light, but Chaos turns the scythe with lazy precision and knocks the sword aside.

The impact throws Thadeus off balance and launches him through the breached doorway. Concrete flashes past, then the bunker wall gives way to night air and a hard landing outside.

He hits a tree shoulder first and drops into the dirt at its base, the transformed blade skidding free beside him. Above, the bunker entrance yawns open like a wound.

Inside the bunker, Elizabeth lies still and the ruined threshold stays exposed, dust drifting between the broken concrete and the dark beyond. Something moves at the edge of the opening, forcing the next decision.

A cold grip tightens at Thadeus’s throat and yanks him clean off the ground. His boots kick once against empty air, and the fallen sword’s blue glow flickers out beside the tree like a snuffed signal.

Thadeus drives both hands up against the pressure at his neck and rips free in one hard wrench. The hold breaks, but the force leaves a raw burn across his throat and a sharp gasp he cannot quite finish.

He drops back to the dirt, coughing once, then gets a knee under him as the bunker mouth gapes above. Chaos still fills the breach, steady and waiting, while Elizabeth stays down inside.

Thadeus reaches for Peacebringer and gets his fingers around the hilt. The weapon stays dead in his hand, heavy and mute, as if whatever fed it has been stripped away.

At the bunker opening, a second shape moves in the dust behind Chaos, half-seen and uninvited. The breach is no longer empty, and whatever is coming next has already found them.

Thadeus jerks upright in the car and the jolt rocks the bench seat beneath him. The bunker is there, the torn doorway outside it, and Chaos is gone from the frame of the world.

His breathing evens out in slow pulls, and Elizabeth shifts closer, studying his face instead of the breach. The car stays still inside The Hideout, its cabin a small, warm pocket against the ruined door beyond.

Outside the car, dust continues to hang in the air near the broken entrance. Inside, the quiet stretches, and Elizabeth waits for whatever Thadeus wants to say next.
