Two days later, Francis pulls open the cricket supply shed. Dusty bats and nets crowd the narrow room, but the first thing he sees is C. S. Lewis suspended from a roof beam by one arm.

Lewis is unconscious. His other arm hangs unnaturally, his shirt is gone, and a cleaning rag has been forced between his teeth. Bruising, welts, and the remnants of a bloody nose mark the attack. Across his chest, the words KNOW YOUR PLACE stand out in dried blood.

Francis

Francis

Lewis! Good God, Lewis!

Francis does not touch the rope. He runs into the corridor and shouts for the Housemaster, his voice carrying through the college.

Fetch the doctor. Then bring Porridge and the company’s record. Nobody alters that shed until I have seen it.

The order turns the discovery into evidence, not a secret to be buried. The message is plain: the Bloods are retaliating against the Phoenix Company, and Lewis has been singled out as its most visible defender.

Francis

Francis

They meant this for all of us, sir. If we let them make Lewis stand alone, they win.

Beyond the open shed, hurried footsteps approach. Lewis remains unconscious, while the company’s next choice waits in the silence.

Get Lewis out of danger and into medical care

✓ Quest Accepted

Hold those responsible for the attack accountable

The noise causes Lewis to stir, his eyes crack open and he moans in pain through the gag.

The footsteps fade into the college beyond. At the sound of Francis’s voice, C. S. Lewis stirs. His eyes crack open, and a muffled moan escapes around the gag.

Francis

Francis

Easy, Lewis. We’re here. You’re not alone.

Lewis tries to let himself go limp. Slipping in and out of consciousness as people worl around him.

C. S. Lewis lets his weight settle into the rope and goes limp, keeping still as the shed blurs around him.

Francis

Francis

That’s it. You needn’t prove anything now.

Francis checks the gag without pulling it tight, then steadies Lewis’s shoulder with a careful hand.

Francis

Francis

He is still here. He is listening, even when his eyes close.

Consciousness thins. Lewis catches fragments of pale rafters, dust in the light, and Francis’s sleeve moving beside him.

Francis

Francis

Rest, Lewis. I’ll tell them exactly what happened, and I’ll stay until they come back.

The shed grows quiet again. Lewis remains limp and supported, no longer struggling against the rope as the distant college carries on beyond the walls.

Lewis tries to simply wait for help to arrive. Trying to piece together what happened in his head. Harnessing his cold ruthlessness to try and remember attackers.

The quiet gives C. S. Lewis room to sort the attack into fragments: the shed door, a command, rough hands, the sudden darkness.

He lets the order of events settle without moving. The first attacker wore a prefect’s ring. The second had a pale nick through one eyebrow.

Francis

Francis

You remember them, don’t you? You needn’t tell me yet. I’ll keep the truth safe until you can.

The rope presses harder into Lewis’s wrist as his concentration steadies. The pain fixes one more detail in place: the first voice called him an example.

Francis

Francis

An example of what? Of refusing to stand alone? That is what they are afraid of.

The names do not return, but the faces do, clear enough for later testimony. Lewis has reconstructed who stood over him and what they meant to accomplish.

Francis lowers himself beside him, keeping one hand beneath Lewis’s shoulder without disturbing the rope. Outside, distant footsteps pass and fade. For this moment, remembering is enough.

Lewis tries to spit the gag out

Lewis works the loosened gag against his teeth, turning his head toward the open space beside Francis.

With a sharp twist and a breathless cough, he spits the cloth onto the shed floor.

Francis

Francis

There. You can breathe properly now. Do not waste your strength.

The freed mouth gives Lewis air, but the rope still holds his right arm above him. Francis keeps his shoulder supported and does not touch the knot.

Francis

Francis

I am going for the doctor as soon as the Housemaster returns. I will tell them exactly what you remembered.

Footsteps sound beyond the shed, heavier and nearer than before. Francis looks toward the door, caught between guarding Lewis and calling for help.

Francis

Francis

They are back. Shall I call them in, or keep the shed sealed until the doctor arrives?

Call them in, and get the doctor quick. Run please Francis. He chokes out the words.

Francis raises his voice toward the doorway, calling the returning men into the shed, then releases Lewis's shoulder only when the Housemaster crosses the threshold.

Francis

Francis

Housemaster, come in. He is conscious. I am fetching the doctor now.

I see him. Go, Francis. Bring the doctor directly, and tell him this is urgent.

Francis darts away across the yard. The Housemaster kneels beneath the beam, keeping clear of the rope and the evidence around it.

Lewis, you are no longer alone. Do not move the arm. The doctor is coming.

From the doorway, Francis's footsteps rapidly diminish toward the school. The Housemaster remains beside Lewis, watching the beam, the writing, and the path beyond the shed.

Lewis confesses he was waiting for this. For them to hit back. He dropped his guard.

The admission costs him. His shoulder spasms against the rope, and the movement draws a sharp breath through his teeth.

You expected retaliation, and still they found you alone. That is not permission for what they did.

He shifts closer without touching the evidence, placing his body between Lewis and the open yard while keeping the arm's position undisturbed.

You will tell it once, when the doctor has made you safe. Until then, you need only remain still and breathe.

Lewis weakly nods. He fights back the tears and asks the Housemaster an honest, vulnerable question. "Did I make a difference here? At Malvern?

Did I make a difference here? At Malvern?

The question leaves Lewis breathless. Tears gather despite his effort, and the rope bites deeper into his wrist before the Housemaster can answer.

The Housemaster of School House

The Housemaster of School House

Yes. You have. Not because you defeated the school, Lewis, but because boys now know they need not face it alone.

He looks toward the bloodied words on Lewis’s chest, then back to the boy’s strained face, refusing to soften the truth or diminish the cost.

The Housemaster of School House

The Housemaster of School House

You made a difference by requiring us to see what we permitted. The Phoenix Company has changed how boys speak, how they listen, and how authority is questioned.

The Housemaster of School House

The Housemaster of School House

But hear me clearly: your suffering is not the measure of that difference. You were not required to be made an example.

Lewis’s fingers lose their grip on the beam. His injured arm slips a fraction, and pain flashes through his shoulder as the Housemaster steadies the rope without disturbing the evidence.

Lewis nods and let the tears come now as he waits for the doctor.

Lewis nods and lets the tears come. They run through the dust on his face while he waits beneath the beam, no longer spending strength to hide them.

The Housemaster of School House

The Housemaster of School House

That is enough, Lewis. You need not master your face for me. Keep breathing and let the doctor do his work.

The Housemaster keeps one hand near the rope without shifting it, guarding Lewis’s injured arm and the shed’s evidence alike. The yard remains quiet beyond the doorway.

The Housemaster of School House

You have waited long enough. Help is coming, and you will not be questioned before you are treated.

Lewis’s tears fall freely now. His breathing steadies by degrees, each breath less tangled with the effort of appearing composed.

The Housemaster of School House

Stay with me, boy. You are seen, and you are believed. For this moment, that is all you must carry.

Lewis starts fading in and out again as the doctor and Francis arrive.

FAILURE (Terrible Health, rolled +0)

Lewis’s vision narrows to the Housemaster’s sleeve and the pale rafters. He lets himself drift, but each breath brings the shed sharply back into focus.

Footsteps rush across the yard. Francis appears with the doctor, both entering quickly while the Housemaster keeps the rope and blood-marked evidence undisturbed.

He has been fading in and out. He remembers the attackers, but his arm is still caught.

Good. Keep him awake if you can, but do not question him. I will examine him before we lower him.

Lewis tries to sink away again. The doctor’s firm voice and Francis’s hand near his shoulder anchor him, and the darkness breaks before it can carry him off.

You need not fight to appear well. Give me a word or a blink when you hear me, and I can work from there.

The doctor studies the rope, then points to the safest angle for releasing it. Lewis cannot escape into unconsciousness, but he has a usable choice: answer with a word or conserve himself with a blink.
