Grey dawn sits on the dormitory as Lewis drags on his jacket and sees the fresh ink-stain on his sleeve again, plain as a signature. The same shape marks the cuff. Someone has been in the room with them, or close enough to leave a message while they slept.

John and Morris are already half-dressed, alert at the doorway. Parsley stands close to Lewis, and Edwin hovers beside the bed with his book satchel, trying to look cheerful and not quite managing it.

C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis

The mark is deliberate. It was meant to be seen.

Lewis opens his notebook to check the pressed leaf tucked inside. It lies there intact, pressed flat between the pages, a private token now made into evidence. Parsley notices and, for a moment, the boy’s face tightens at the risk of it being found.

Edwin

Edwin

If anyone searches your things, that leaf could matter. We ought to keep it hidden with care.

John

John

Then we keep the notebook on Lewis. Nobody gets a hand on it unless we let them.

Outside, the pale light brightens over the quadrangle. The boys gather their caps, books, and a few scraps of food, while the tension in the room settles into purpose. Whatever the stain means, they do not have to solve it before the hill walk. They only have to carry it with them.

✓ Quest Accepted

Identify who marked Lewis’s cuff

As they grab bread from the kitchens to bring with them, Lewis asks everyone to double check they brought what they were supposed too. Lewis is bringing money amd the pressed leaf, Parsley is bringing a notebook and a couple towels, John is bringing water and the knife, Morris is bringing the map, and Edwin is bringing the rocks.

The kitchen passage is chill and narrow, and the boys move in a tight, half-awake line with bread wrapped in cloth. Lewis slows them with a glance and starts checking the burden, one by one, like a clerk taking account.

C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis

Money and the leaf are with me. Parsley, notebook and towels?

Parsley

Parsley

Notebook, yes, and two towels folded under my arm.

John

John

Water in the bottle, and the knife in my pocket.

Morris

Morris

Map is here. Folded twice, safe from the damp.

Edwin

Edwin

Rocks as promised. A whole pocketful, and I have not dropped them yet.

As Edwin pats his satchel, one dark pebble knocks against the cloth and rings softly. The sound draws Lewis’s eye to a wet smear on the boy’s cuff, green-black under the dawn light, like the mark on his own sleeve. For a moment, the answer feels less like a guess and more like a room remembering where a hand has been.

Lewis takes Edwin’s hand and turns the cuff toward the light. The green-black smear is not a smear at all, but a thumbprint, pressed in with care and left to dry.

C. S. Lewis

It matches the mark on my sleeve.

Edwin freezes, then lets his arm go slack as Lewis rubs at the cloth. The stain has sunk into the weave, deliberate and recent.

Edwin

Edwin

I did not notice it there before.

John leans in from the doorway, his face tightening. Morris stops with the map half-open, listening.

John

John

That is the same ink.

On the way out, a broad-faced junior by the notice board turns his head too quickly, his fingers dark at the tips. He looks away at once, but not before Lewis sees the fresh green stain under his nail.

Lewis bolts after him. Pinning him to the wall.

Lewis breaks from the doorway and drives down the passage after the junior, shoes striking hard on the boards.

The boy starts to turn, but Lewis catches him at the shoulder and slams him back against the wall, stopping him dead.

The Broad-Faced Junior

The Broad-Faced Junior

What are you doing?

C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis

You’ve got ink on your fingers. Explain it.

The junior’s hand jerks up between them, and the green-black stain flashes plainly beneath his nail.

The Broad-Faced Junior

The Broad-Faced Junior

He should not have seen that.

Behind them, the others are still at the room’s threshold, held back by the suddenness of it, while the corridor narrows into silence around the pinned boy.

Lewis says quietly that if he speaks up now, he can get it out before any of the Bloods hear him. So who put him up to it, and why?

You can tell me now, before the Bloods hear.

Lewis keeps him pinned, but his voice stays low. The junior’s bravado slips for a breath, then hardens into panic.

The Broad-Faced Junior

I am not naming anyone.

The Broad-Faced Junior

The Broad-Faced Junior

If he talks, he is done either way.

At the threshold, John shifts one step forward, then checks himself. Morris tightens his grip on the map, watching the boy’s stained hand instead of his face.

The Broad-Faced Junior

The Broad-Faced Junior

Get off me, or they will know you asked.

The junior twists his wrist, and the green-black ink smears across Lewis’s sleeve, a fresh streak against the cuff. He is not giving a name, only a warning that someone else is close enough to hear about this.

That boy is liable to receive corporal punishment for his insolence.

Lewis lets the cold ice of his inner ruthlessness seep into his voice. "We are leaving to go on a hike. I'm sure if we take you far enough out there won't be anyone to hear a cry for help."

The Broad-Faced Junior

All right. Stop. I will tell you.

He swallows, then jerks his chin toward the doorway. His dark fingers are shaking now, the ink on them bright against the skin.

The Broad-Faced Junior

The Broad-Faced Junior

It was one of ours. He was at the notice board before dawn.

John’s posture changes at the threshold, a sharp intake of recognition cutting through his watchfulness. Morris edges the map lower, listening hard.

The Broad-Faced Junior

The Broad-Faced Junior

He said to keep it quiet, and that if anyone made a fuss, the Bloods would sort it.

The junior’s gaze drops to Lewis’s cuff, then back up, fear overtaking bluster as the corridor seems suddenly smaller than before. The name hangs just out of reach, but the threat is no longer outside the room.

Lewis keeps talking coldly. "Here is what you are going to do. You tell them you planted the mark successfully. You ask them for whatever else they need you to do. And you pretend this conversation never happened. Be a good boy for them and keep your head down. And this will blow over."

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)

Lewis’s cold instructions pin the room in place for a beat. The Broad-Faced Junior stares, then gives a jerky nod, as if the words have already been heard somewhere worse than this room.

The Broad-Faced Junior

The Broad-Faced Junior

I will say that. I will ask, then... I will say nothing else.

John

John

That is a retreat, not an answer, but it is still a crack in the wall.

Morris shifts at the threshold, the map drooping in one hand. The corridor beyond seems quieter now, as if someone there has stopped listening or begun to listen harder.

The Broad-Faced Junior

The Broad-Faced Junior

If they ask, it was me. I planted it. That is what you want, yes?

The boy swallows and looks toward the door without turning his head, fear replacing the last of his swagger. John and Morris both know the shape of that glance now, the look of a junior measuring how close home is and finding it very far.

The Broad-Faced Junior

The Broad-Faced Junior

What else do you want me to do?

That boy is liable to receive corporal punishment for his insolence.

Lewis tells him to just say he got the job done and let it go. As far as Leeis is concerned, they are square and Lewis won't do anything to him. And if things go to shit and he needs help, to find Lewis.

The Broad-Faced Junior

His shoulders slacken by a fraction. The fight leaves his face first, then his wrists. He does not pull free, but he stops bracing for a blow that is no longer coming.

John

John

That is useful. Better to have one frightened witness than a loyal liar.

At the threshold, Morris shifts his weight and turns his head toward the corridor, as if measuring how far the story can travel before sunrise. The dormitory feels less like a hiding place now, more like a room that has chosen a side.

The broad-faced junior gives a single, stiff nod. Whatever name he was meant to protect, he will carry the blame outward instead, and that choice settles over the room like a lock clicking shut.

Lewis releases the junior at last, and the boy peels away from the wall with a swallowed breath. Without looking back, Lewis crosses the room, shoulders tight, and heads for the door.

The others do not stop him. John shifts aside first, giving him a narrow path, while Morris closes the map and turns with him toward the corridor.

Lewis steps out into the chill passage alone for a beat, jaw set hard against whatever he is holding in. The dorm behind him stays quiet, the silence of it following like a hand at his back.

John

He is going now. Good. Let him have the first yard of it.

Morris falls in behind the threshold, map tucked against his side, and the Broad-Faced Junior remains inside, shrinking from the wall as if the room itself has turned on him.

Lewis reaches the outer door and pushes through into the grey morning. The building gives him up at once, and the cold air takes his face in both hands.

He keeps walking toward the hike route without speaking, with the other boys beginning to follow in his wake.

John reaches into his pocket and pulls out the folded map, opening it between them like a small table. His finger lands on the line of the dormitory path, then taps the route back to school.

John folds the map once, then again, and tucks it away. The return path is no longer the point. All four boys are looking at Lewis now, not as a danger to be managed, but as one of their own who has just named the shape of the trap.

Lewis backs up against the tree and lets himself slide to the ground. He asksbParsley if he remembers what Lewis said to Fribble that day in the prep room. About Malice? This is what he meant.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

John

John

You said the thing plainly enough, but you said it to the right man. Fribble heard the warning.

Morris

Morris

That is the point, then. Lewis names the rotten thing, and the others prefer to hide behind it.

Edwin

Edwin

It makes sense now. You were not boasting. You were drawing a line.

Parsley’s gaze stays on Lewis, softer now, while the bare branches above them tremble in the wind. The pressed leaf in Lewis’s pocket remains hidden, but the meaning of his old warning settles between the boys like something finally placed on the table.

Lewis's tears fall freely now. He says he sometimes wonders if he is just as bad as the bullies are on the inside. He would have done it. He would have hated himself after but he would have hurt that boy.

John lowers the map to his side, and the little circle loosens by a fraction, no longer braced for a blow that has already passed. Beyond them, the winter field lies quiet under a pale sky.

The little circle holds in the cold grass, quiet and unhurried, while the pale field waits around them.

Lewis pulls Paraley into a hug for several moments. Anchoring himself.

Lewis steps in and folds both arms around Parsley, holding him there for a long, quiet moment. Parsley returns the hug at once, and the others let the stillness settle around them in the grass.

Lewis asks them to call him out when he does that. He doesn't want to be that person. So if he starts saying and doing terrible things, he needs to know someone will pull him back.
