Aged 13, Paul starts his first term at Shrewsbury School, an elite British boarding school, in 1950, but the school is still deeply set in the ways of the previous century. Paul finds it ludicrously snobbish and absurd. He quickly ends up victimised by his housemaster, who uses corporal punishment as the first resort, not the last.

GOAL & MOTIVE

Paul Foot seeks to survive the harsh environment of Shrewsbury School while navigating the absurd social expectations of the era. He has a particular fear of being forced to bare his bottom to receive corporal punishment.

NEMESIS

The housemaster, Anthony Chenevix-Trench, who uses corporal punishment as a primary method of control over Paul Foot, and regularly forces him to disrobe in order to receive a beating on his bare buttocks.

THE WORLD

England in 1950, where everyone knows their place. Specifically, Shrewsbury School in Shropshire, established in 1552 and at this time only admitting boys. The 110-acre grounds include classrooms, a separate chapel, and boarding houses, each with dormitories, studies, and refectories. The oldest boys have their own bedrooms. Each house also has a prep room for younger boys to work in, and the prefects share a library and a common room. Toilet and washing facilities are also shared. Corporal punishment of younger boys by masters is frequent and routine.

CHARACTERS

Several older boys, especially prefects, are aware of the plight that Foot finds himself in, and are willing to try to help him with his studies to avoid the almost inevitable bare bottom beatings that Chenevix-Trench intends.

HISTORY & EVENTS

A privileged youth, Foot was the son of Sir Hugh Foot (who was the last Governor of Cyprus and Jamaica and, as Lord Caradon, the Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations from 1964 to 1970) and the grandson of Isaac Foot, who had been a Liberal MP. He was a nephew of Michael Foot, later leader of the Labour Party. He spent his youth at his uncle's house in Devon, in Italy with his grandmother and with his parents (who lived abroad) in Cyprus and Jamaica. Now he has to mix with ordinary people at his new school, and suffer the attention of his new housemaster.
