The cabin is still except for the rustle of packed cloth and the scratch of marker on cardboard. Buster and Mara move in tight rhythm, final supplies going into two dark duffel bags beside the table.

Mara taps the unfolded map flat with two fingers. The route to Lask and Meridian is marked in short, ruthless steps, cabin to town edge, town edge to relay point, relay point to the network’s next blind spot.

A small radio crackles on the shelf, then spits a burst of static, not local. Mara freezes, listening. The signal repeats once, a coded ping from the same channels that have hunted them all along.

Mara looks up at Buster, then at the map. "That’s them," she says. "They’re moving, or calling someone in. If we wait, we lose the trail."

The ping is coming through the old network route.

Buster shoulders one bag, Mara takes the other, and together they leave the table bare except for the map. The path is no longer a plan on paper. It is their opening move.

Buster Jones leaves Rustic remote cabin behind and arrives at relay point.

I head out with Mara toward the relay point

Relay point. A dead service lot crouches under a leaning tower and a chain-link fence, all wet concrete, puddles, and old grease. Buster and Mara step in from the access road, duffels heavy, eyes up.

Ahead, a maintenance hatch hangs open beside a cable cabinet. A faint red blink pulses from inside, steady as a heartbeat. Mara stops short, reading the place like a trap already sprung.

This is it. If the ping came through the old route, the relay has a live path inside.

Then we cut it at the source.

Buster moves first, crossing the slick pavement and taking the lead between Mara and the open hatch. His bulk blocks the direct line in, a shield made human.

Inside the cabinet, bundled wires glow faintly around a compact transmitter rig. The blink quickens when Buster nears it, as if something on the other end has noticed them.

Buster, if we break this, they lose the map to us. If we don’t, they keep steering us.

A sharp digital chirp answers from deeper in the relay room, and the red blink shifts to amber. Somebody is already trying to reach through.

Cut the relay at the source

I reach out and rip the entire cabinet from the wall and crush it between my hands

Buster reaches in and rips the cabinet free with a single wrench of his arms. Screws scream out of the wall, and the whole box tears loose into his hands.

He crushes it inward. The transmitter frame buckles, sparks spit across his knuckles, and the amber light dies under the pressure.

The relay room answers with a hard electronic stutter, then a flat burst of silence. Mara flinches at the crackle, but the line goes dark.

The source is gone.

A burned smell fills the hatchway. One shard of casing cuts Buster's palm as he lets the wreck fall, leaving a red smear on the metal.

That was the live link. If they were watching, they just felt it break.

Inside the cabinet cavity, a second bundle of wires drops slack, dead weight against the wall. Mara steps closer, eyes on the darkened relay housing, waiting for the next move.

We have a window now. Do we move on the tower, or use this silence to find who else is listening?
