Buster emerges into a narrow alley, cold night air hitting like a slap. Steam curls from a cracked grate, and the brick walls squeeze the sound of distant traffic into a muffled hum.
The Teenager clings to his coat, stumbling close beside him. Above, the Veteran Hero scans the fire escapes and rooftops, tense and fast, hunting for the cleanest route out.

Leo
Are they still following us?
A flashlight beam slices across the alley mouth from the street, then vanishes. Somewhere nearby, a patrol radio crackles, too faint to make out.

The Veteran Hero
Not here. Move, stay low, and keep close to Buster.
At the alley’s far end, a service door hangs open under a flickering security light. Beyond it, a loading bay offers cover, but the street is still exposed.
“I slip us through the loading bay”
SUCCESS (Legendary Athletics, rolled +2)

Buster slips the side group under the blinking security lamp and into the loading bay. The open service door swallows the cold behind them, and the alley noise drops to a dull throb.
Inside, stacked pallets and shadowed crates hide them from the street. The Teenager hurries in first, still clutching Buster’s coat, while the Veteran Hero turns and pulls the door most of the way shut.

The Veteran Hero
Good. Keep moving. Don’t let the light catch you.
For a breath, it feels clean. Then the stairwell behind the community center bangs again, loud enough to rattle the loading bay wall.

Leo
That sound is too close.
A thin mechanical whine drifts over the alley mouth, and a searching beam starts to skate across the bricks outside.

The Veteran Hero
Buster, if that drone turns in here, we have seconds.
“I pull the door shut and kill the light”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -2)

Buster hooks both hands on the service door and hauls. The metal gives with a dull scrape, sealing the bay from the alley. At the same time, he reaches up and kills the blinking lamp by the switch, dropping the threshold into shadow.
The light outside dies first. The beam from the street keeps sliding for a heartbeat, then loses the doorway and drifts on past the bricks.

The Veteran Hero
Good. Stay low.
The Teenager flinches at the last scrape of metal, then ducks deeper behind the pallets as the bay darkens around them.
From the community center, the stairwell bangs again, sharp enough to rattle dust loose from the crate stack. Somewhere out in the alley, the drone whine shifts, searching.

Buster Jones
The door is shut. The light is out.
Buster’s shoulder burns from the pull, and the switch snaps hard under his thumb, leaving the bay blind except for the thin sliver under the door. The drone’s beam hesitates outside, as if it has noticed the dark.
“I listen for the drone and stay in the dark”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +1)

Buster goes still, every muscle locked against the door, and lets the bay breathe around him. The drone whine slides past the loading bay once, then dips lower, no longer circling the doorway.

Buster Jones
It is moving away from the door.
The thin strip of light under the service door shifts right, then vanishes as the beam sweeps on toward the street.

The Veteran Hero
Keep down. It did not see us.
The Teenager loosens one hand from the pallet edge, still crouched, listening to the alley go quiet except for that far stairwell banging inside the center.
Then the drone sound cuts off abruptly, as if it has committed to some other target beyond the bay.

The Veteran Hero
Wait for my count. If that stays gone, we move.
“I signal we should move when it's clear”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Buster lifts two fingers from the door and gives a small, sharp wave toward the dark bay mouth. The signal is plain, move when clear.

The Veteran Hero
On my mark. Stay low and stay close.
He rises from his crouch first, angling his body between the others and the street, then eases the service door open just enough to check the alley.

Leo
They breathe out, then tighten up again, ready to follow the instant the path opens.
A stray band of light washes the far curb, but it keeps drifting away. The loading bay stays dark, and the banging from the stairwell still knocks at the edge of hearing.
The Veteran Hero jerks his head once toward the opening. The route is clear enough to try, but it will not stay that way for long.
“I slip out with them low and fast”
SUCCESS (Legendary Athletics, rolled +2)

Buster slips out low, the Veteran Hero ahead of him and the Teenager tucked in behind. The three of them clear the loading bay in one quick, silent rush.
The service door eases shut behind them, leaving only the alley's cold strip of streetlight and the dark bulk of the wall beside them.
The Veteran Hero flattens a hand, signaling a halt. From farther back, the stairwell banging keeps pounding through the building like a warning drum.

Leo
We made it out.
A faint mechanical whine rises somewhere above the alley mouth, not loud yet, but close enough to make the Veteran Hero look up fast.
Buster and the others are outside now, away from the loading bay and moving into the cold cover of the alley, but the night still feels watched.
“I keep moving toward the safe house”
FAILURE (Terrible Agility, rolled -3)

Buster pushes ahead toward the safe house route, but the alley dead-ends at a rusted delivery gate chained shut across the exit.

The Veteran Hero
Wrong way. They must have locked this route down.
Above them, the faint mechanical whine thickens into a searching buzz, and a small light skims along the brick tops.

Leo
Please, no, don’t let it see us.

Buster Jones
The gate is chained from the outside.
The Veteran Hero pulls the Teenager back into the shadow of a dumpster as the buzz pauses overhead, hovering.
The alley goes very still except for the far-off pounding from the building and the drone’s tiny motor hum, waiting to catch a movement.
“I grab the gate and rip it out of the wall so we can continue”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Buster plants both hands on the gate and heaves. The chained frame screams against the brick, then tears free in one brutal crash of rust and masonry.
Cold air pours through the gap. The delivery gate hangs crooked in Buster’s grip, no longer part of the wall.

The Veteran Hero
That works. Move, now.
The Veteran Hero darts the Teenager toward the opening, keeping low under the sweep of the light above.

Leo
It’s open. It’s actually open.
The search light wobbles and drops onto the broken gate, then the drone’s buzz sharpens into an alarmed whine from overhead.
Somewhere back by the community center, the stairwell thuds answer with renewed pounding, and the alley ahead is clear for one dangerous sprint.

Broken gate
“I pull the Teenager behind the broken gate”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -3)

Buster hooks an arm around the Teenager and yanks them behind the ripped gate, using the twisted metal as a shield.

Leo
Too close. But hidden.
The Teenager stumbles into the shadow of the gate, breathing hard, while the Veteran Hero drops lower beside them.

The Veteran Hero
Keep moving. The light is swinging back.
Above them, the search light skates past the torn opening, missing their faces by a heartbeat.
From behind, the stairwell thuds slam louder through the alley wall, sharp enough to shake loose grit from the brick.
Buster feels the gate bite his forearm as he holds it steady, and the broken frame groans with the extra weight.
“I keep moving the Teenager toward the safe house”
SUCCESS (Terrible Agility, rolled +2)
