Two weeks of quiet settle over the cabin like fresh snow. Morning light spills through thin curtains, and the only sounds are the stove ticking and wind brushing the pines outside.

Buster Jones stands near the window, taking in the stillness. The room is small, rustic, and real, a table, two chairs, stacked firewood, and a kettle warming on the stove.

I keep waiting for the world to knock on the door. It never does.

Mara sets a mug down on the table and gives him a careful, hopeful look. Her shoulders are looser than they used to be, like she is learning how to live without bracing for impact.

I found the flour in the third crate, by the way. So unless you want me to keep improvising dinner, we should probably label things.

The cabin feels almost shy around them, as if it is waiting to become a home. Outside, the pines stand still under a pale sky, and for once, nothing chases them.

Label the cabin crates

I walk over to the table and help Mara organize the remaining supplies.

Buster crosses to the table and starts sorting the remaining supplies into neat little piles. Mara watches him for a beat, then reaches for a roll of masking tape and a marker, ready to help.

Mara

Mara

Flour here, canned food here, tools somewhere less likely to disappear into the wrong crate. This is almost organized enough to be dangerous.

I label the food crates with Mara, building the courage to ask her about our future here

Buster finishes the food stack and draws the first box toward him. Mara slides the marker into his hand, then tips the crate so the lid faces up for a clean label.

Food.

He writes the word in careful block letters, then adds a second mark for the dry goods. Mara watches the pen stroke, her smile softening as the crate becomes just a crate again.

Mara

Mara

That is cleaner than anything I ever filed. I think you are making me look bad on purpose.

Buster sets the marker down and nudges the next box closer. The cabin stays quiet except for the stove and the faint scrape of tape against cardboard.

What happens when the crates are done?

Then we stop pretending the future is a rumor. We make one room at a time, and we keep choosing it.

She says it without looking away, but her fingers tighten on the tape roll when she reaches the last unlabeled crate. The old habit of command flickers there, small but visible, before she sets it aside and waits for Buster's next label.

I ask Mara what future she wants here. Will we ever get married or have kids?

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The cabin stays still around the table, but Mara’s hand pauses over the open crate as Buster’s question lands between them.

Buster Jones

Buster Jones

What kind of future do you want here? Do you think we ever get married, or have kids?

Mara looks up slowly, startled by how plain the question is. Then her shoulders loosen, like someone finally set a weight down.

Mara

Mara

Yes. If we keep this, I want a home that can hold that answer. A kitchen with too many mugs, names on the wall, noise in the morning.

Mara

Mara

I want to be chosen for more than survival.

She reaches across the table, not to take control of anything, just to rest her fingers beside his. The tape roll sits forgotten near the crate, and the label stack is almost finished.

Mara

Mara

I do not know if I deserve all of it yet. But I want the ordinary parts, the hard parts, the parts that make a life real. If you are asking whether I can imagine it, I already do.

I finish labeling the remaining crate and lean in to give Mara a kiss

Buster finishes the last label and sets the marker down. He leans across the table, and Mara meets him halfway, smiling against the quiet cabin morning.
